No, its not likely the oil compromised any of the parts. A bad ignition is common on the 2000, 2001 Blasts, but I'm sure both of our confidences are shaken at this point with your dealer.

Actually there are 3 major styles of gaskets.
1st: The paper ones that came on your Blast originally and had a high failure rate and were replaced for free.
2nd: A metal type gasket that were stock on late 2002 Blasts on up and was used to replace the leaking paper ones. Different variations through updates as years passed, but basically metal.
3rd: About 2007 they changed the top rocker covers to accept a different rubber gasket (not the previously mentioned updated lower metal gasket).

My guess is they were using the latest top gasket and went to the earlier rubber gasket, (not the paper gaskets*).

*The paper gaskets will work in a pinch, but its an awful lot of trouble to get them to be reliable.

First of all, let me say I love this forum. I have learned more in a couple discussions than ever before. Thanks for helping my ignorance out. Anyway, my bike is completely stock from top to bottom. When I spoke with the dealer last time, he said they were using a thicker, older gasket. When I finally do get my bike back, I'll ask them which one they used. If it IS the paper version, I'll be sure to express my concern about that. Now that I know the ignition was a common problem, I'll have no concerns paying for that either. You people rock when it comes to helping out. Thank you. I'm sure I'll be back to learn more. Gotta keep an older mind active - eh!}

Eric - 270 plus shipping - spring weight and shock length to be specified. Us stock shock length in mm, and stock spring is 600, works is - yellow spring 800, blue spring 900, and black spring 1000 - lol - you could probably order a 700 lb spring as well - lol -

There you go an inexpensive performance shock for the Blast.

REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILURE AT 4,700 MILES?

I was one my way home tonight and noticed the bike had a "odd" shake to it on level and straight roads but not on turns, this happened about 300 miles ago but nothing was found wrong at that time and the "odd" shake has been gone up till today.

I checked the bike when I arrived home and discovered about half of the ball bearings were missing from the right rear axle bearing !?!?

To say I was surprised would be an understatement, any thoughts as to why this bearing failed at such a low mileage?

Thanks Paul B

My thoughts are overzealous cleaning, harsh storage conditions or overtorquing/over tightening of the axle nut. Earlier years were more prone to premature failure, but yours isnt an early year!

Or sometimes it just happens: (

I'm swapping out my 04 for an 07 Blast. And have been driving my 07 around, the 07 seems a little doggy compared to the 04(but the 04 I rejetted and opened up the airbox) but the 07 shifts so smooth it's great. But today it started dieing at idle, while driving down the road at 55mph, cold, warmed up or hot. Also the starter won't work till you turn off the ing. and turn it back on, then the starter works and it fires right back up. I was thinking it might be the (fall down) switch, what do you guys think.
Thanks Jon

The first part - Das Boot! The unrelated second part sounds like a loose ground - check and tighten front and rear and check battery and battery connection.

I pulled the boot when I was adjusting and checking things out. I was going to replace the boot with a hose I buy locally but the boot looked perfect so I put it back on and threw the hose in my road side repair bag just in case(I had boot problems with my 04 and replaced it with this hose and have had no problems for 3yrs at around $2 it's a great deal)I just bought a new battery and cleaned the connections(at the battery) but will check them just in case.
Thanks Jon

But you are correct in assuming it could be a bad BAS or BAS related. The BAS wont reset itself unless you turn off the ignition. A bad BAS probably wont make it run poorly though, just not run. Key word: probably.

Checked the battery all was fine, but while I was there I loosened the ground, started the bike removed the the cable the bike died but as soon as the cable was replaced the bike started with just pushing the starter switch no cycling the key. So I am back to thinking the BAS (if that is the thing that keeps the bike from starting after you fall over at least till you cycle the Key) is bad. Is there an easy way to by-pass that? As far as the bike running poorly it runs good it is just that the 04 seems to run better(it is probably the carb jetting and opened up air box on the 04 thats making the difference).
Thanks for the help, Jon

BAS-Bank Angle Sensor. If the bike leans more than 55 degrees it shuts the bike down.
It can be bypassed by hooking 2 or 3 of the 3 wires together that run to it. I dont remember how, but if you follow the schematic it shouldnt be that hard (for some).
Jetting makes a big difference.

That hose won't work permanently - maybe get you home, but thats about it. If you inspect the stock boot you will see that it has both positive stops and locks, with the clamps cinching everything tight, sealing - a piece of hose has none of that. The crack can be very small and effect your engine. Check also clutch safety and kick stand - dis-able both - takes minutes.

EZ the hose has been working perfect for over 3years on my 04, and when I checked the boot as rough as I was even a small crack would have become apparent. Neither of the switches you mention need the key cycled to engage the starter switch, the BAS does, so I'll be heading in that direction(thanks GH)
Thanks Jon

JW - how many miles on the bike? Stock airbox even opened still on? The BAS is an easy skip over with a single wire - the point is loose grounds can also do that, and those two 'switches I mentioned will cause the key not to work - lol

Have some of the KV topics been removed? I could have sworn there was one called Oil - the viscous truth. I'm trying to find the best procedure for changing the primary fluid.

What happened to your manual?
There's only two ways, the manual way and the easy way (unless you already have Rearsets, then refer back to the manual).
Easy way-drain the fluid when hot. Fill with one quart (32oz) through the trans vent tube. Takes awhile, but a lot less work.

Note that there is an error in the manual which identifies the primary tension adjustment screw as a drain. DAMHIK.

Hi guys, question for you. Thumper has been running great except every now and then I lose power and it surges back. Can be under load, can be running flat. Recently it has started backfiring after the power loss. Now it has decided to crap out in the parking lot and will crank but not turn over. I can smell the gas getting to the carb but no go.

My first thought is Das Boot, although it hasn't had any of the usual symptoms the boot has given me, like good idle and die out. Anyone concur or have another idea?

And how do I know if my ignition is starting to crap out? Someone suggested that could be a problem. Have 20K miles on it.

Thank you very much. (NOTE: New living quarters has no oak tree, but a big rose bush. Do you recommend dancing naked around the rose bush?)

Sounds like classic vacuum loss. (DAS Boot). It could also be the tank vent hose. Make sure it isn't blocked.
