Don't cut the bars. They're fine as is. There' s two way to do the primary lube: the easy way and the hard way. But I dont have time to elaborate right now. You do need a primary chain adjustment if the spacer is still on the adjuster bolt.
. But don't do anything until you have a repair manual.

Stay away from synthetic unless you want to change seals, gaskets, o-rings, etc. often. Stick with dino-oils! Just my opinion.

Well that the first time ever I've heard that about synthetic!!! Thats usually reserved for alcohol based/mix fuels.
That would explain why 4 motorcycles and 3 cars arent leaking oil all over my garage !!!

DC. Use synthetic oil. Harley synthetic engine oil can be used in both the engine and transmission (if thats the brand you decide on). The engine and especially the transmission will thank you.

Only the owners manuals were online from Buell. Posting the repair manuals online here would violate copyrights, etc.
You just need a repair/service manual. That will have everything the owners manual has.

I would put at least a hundred miles on your Blast before doing anything (unless you have reason to believe something is in dire need of changing). A bike that old with such low mileage is going to be tight, so any adjustments should be made after its loosened up at least a little (especially the primary chain).
Its a right of passage that all Blast owners that do their own maintenance should change the primary/transmission fluid the repair manual way. You'll learn to hate Y-frame removal!!! If you're planning on adjusting the clutch, then do it that way. Otherwise you can drain the fluid from the primary and just replace the fluid by pouring it down the transmission vent tube (an open 3/8" line that runs up the left side frame rail under the seat. It exits the trans on top of the engine, just behind the cylinder and ahead of the starter). Drain it hot, and let it fully drain. It takes one quart. WARNING: it takes a very long time to fill through the vent tube. But you can spend that time patiently waiting, drinking, watching tv, etc. or you can spend that time removing the y-frame. Its your choice. But again, if you have to adjust the clutch, you'll have to remove the y-frame anyway.

Lastly, Welcome!
Look for a PM (private message) from me in your email inbox.

PS "DO NOT take the carb apart to give it a good cleaning". This is rarely ever necessary, but some people have the idea that if a bike sits too long then the carb is somehow all fouled up and it needs a good cleaning. This very, very often leads to problems. If you have a running problem, diagnose it first. Blasts that sit long do sometimes have a clogged slow jet, but that doesnt mean pulling the carb all apart. You just replace the slow jet with a #45 as it should have come with stock.
" " they'll be putting that on my tombstone!!!

Well I'm not crazy about screaming eagle syn but the owner changed the oil already so I thought I would use the same for primary. After a few thousand miles ill probably switch to amsoil. I owned a ninja 500 years ago and when I was in the market for another 500 bike I chose the buell mainly because it wasn't a rice rocket and unique. I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I test drove the buell I didn't notice the horse power difference to much and I liked the single cylinder feel
. I know it won't be as fast as my old kawasaki, but I'm older and wiser now so that's not a big deal to me. Time will tell on reliability, my kawasaki was solid as a rock. I'll post pics of bike when I get it in a few weeks. Thanks to all who contribute to forum good stuff here!. I wouldn't take apart carburetor but I will put fuel additive to help clean out the cob webs.

500 years ago??? Well, once I slowed down my brain to read the whole sentence...

My other ride is a parallel twin 500 based on the old Ninja racing motor. It can get up and go pretty nicely. You will come to truly love and appreciate all the Blast can do and the uniqueness of having something a little different.

Happy Trails to you

My wife is dead set on getting a blast for her first bike. We have been looking at a few. The pickings are quite slim for some reason. However, one of the bikes I came across caused me to stop and do a double-take.

We were looking at an 06 or 07, and it had oil running down the kickstand, so I did a little poking and saw two capped hoses (looked like breather hoses) running to the swingarm, one of which was the source of the oil. I asked the owner, and he said they were oil blowout lines, designed to spew motor oil all over the back tire if the pressure inside the engine got too high. I told him that sounded ridiculous, but I can't say I know any better. Can anyone tell me what those hoses might be? Was the owner as full of it as I think he is?

The bike was running really poorly and his asking price was WAY too high, so I won't be buying that one anyway, but I would like to know what those hoses are. My XB doesn't have them.

The one line is a vent line the other the drain line - both should be capped and not leaking. Easy fix. Walk away from owners like that though - next he will tell you his swear grandma was the owner rider - lol.

So one is the oil drain line? I saw on the parts diagrams that one was the overflow line from the gas tank, but I couldn't find an explanation for the second one.

Another noob question. Another bike I looked at had a blank odometer. I don't mean "000000", I mean as in nothing displaying, completely blank. Is there a button on the blast that changes the function of the odometer? Or is this another issue I should stay away from (scrambled brains)? The seller did mention that the VR had blown, popping the head light and tail/brake light. Could these be connected?

Yes, speedo probably bad. I dont think it has a fuse, but....

If the bike is totally stock, but with a bad speedo and a great selling price, it might be worth it. Depends on who fixed the problem.

Concur about that owner. Sounds like he wanted you to pay a lot of money for a bike he considers garbage (and probably treated it that way).

Buying a 2000 blast. Seller wants $1500 for a machine with 8k miles. I asked if he had the rear sprocket had been replaced. He stated that he hadnt heard of a recall on the bike and that harley had just put a new belt on it.

When that was done harley did not mention any issues regarding that part. Is there a simple way for me to tell if the repair has been completed? If i learn it hasnt would a harley dealer be able to do it or could i find the kit to replace it myself?

Yes - give the vin to a friendly HD dealership to run - will say if done or not - it is required that this issue is addressed - very dangerious not to have it done.

@Ezblast thanks for the quick reply. if the harley dealer says it hasn't, can the repair be done still? I was looking around for the kit or even just the sprocket, and was unable to find it.

i did find an 03 with the right seat but no records for $500 more, thinking about going that route.

Its easy to tell the difference:
1) count the number of 'teeth' on the rear sprocket. Old bad sprocket has 73, new sprocket has 80.
2) see this link. The 2 are easy to tell apart visually
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=20164&post=1281351#POST1281351
3) Its very unlikely that the HD dealer could find an old recalled belt. It would be 11 years old at least.

I'd venture a guess that they would still honor the recall, no matter who owns the bike, since it was potentially very dangerous.

Lastly: Welcome to Badweb!

Stock Pirellis are MT75's and only come in 2 sizes. 16" & 17". The Blast takes the 16" tires. They are very good tires (sticky).
Stock tire sizes are Front 100/80 x 16. Rear 120/80 x 16

See the tire thread for other different tire size choices

Just got my blast home, getting used to shifting on my streets. The toe peg is bent to hell on my bike, Is there a difference between the 2000 blasts and the 2003? One site that has the peg lists the years as 2003-2009, Id like to order from them because they have my seat too.

Any help?

They're all the same. 99.99% of all Blast parts, all years are the same or directly interchangeable. There is very little difference in model years and unless you really know your Blasts you cant tell a 2000 Blast from a 2010 Blast!

...and congratulations!

You in Jax?
45/175.
I ran these on an '05 Blast w/Thumpe's Superboot & K&N filter setup + a Jardine RT 1 exhaust (w/The QMI)
It worked for me! (6'1" & 200 Lbs)
I had to sell my Blast. (Gotta love the current economy)
I am now piloting an XB12XP.
Holla if'n you wanna meet up & talk about your bike.
When I have the $$$ I WILL be Blasting again.

PM sent.

(Jet kit uses different numbers than stock HD/Buell jets. Stock jets the numbers go up in richness. K&N the numbers go down for more rich.)

Gearheaderiko: Sorry, simultaneous posts.
I didn't realize that there is a difference twixt HD/Buell jets & the kit jets mentioned above.
I wasn't trying to confuse anyone, honest!

Again, sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Tell me about it....
Good thing is it has Hard bags.
Bad thing is the mileage sucks in comparison to the Blast.
It's a good bike but I miss my Blast.
