My Vance n Hines actually sets off a couple of alarms on a daily basis close to work. I try (sometimes) to coast by the cars when I know where they are parked. A buddy and I used to cruise through parking structures with two '85 Ninja's with Bassani Superbike pipes on them. Oh the good ole days. | ||

How do you determine TDC on the blast? I am going to be replacing the Rocker Box Gaskets this weekend. I have read "look thru the spark plug hole to see that the valves are closed". There must be another way. Thanks in advance for any advice. | ||

Pull the "timing plug" out of the crankcase. Its right at the bottom of the cylinder where the "V" would be if it were a twin. 3/8 allen. (Pushrod/belt drive side of the engine). TDC is a vertical groove/line in the flywheel. Center it in the hole. | ||

PS there are 2 TDC's. One the valves are closed (the one you want), the other the valves are open. You'll know which when you get the rocker cover off. Or it will be when the LED on the module goes on (or off), which is when the spark plug fires. Turn the engine one revolution to get the other TDC. Or if you have the carb or exhaust off, you can look to see if a valve is open. Or............ | ||

Gearheaderiko - when you mentioned the LED, is that under the plastic round cover at the end of the crankshaft? I popped that cover off and saw a module of some sort. Thanks for the quick replies!!! | ||

When you take the rocker cover off you can rotate the engine a couple of revolutions and watch the rocker arms operate, the correct TDC is when the intake valve has closed then the TDC mark comes into the window. I think the TDC marks are two dots. The line is the timing mark. | ||

So you can remove the rocker cover and see the rocker arms... Cool, I was just concerned about having any tension on the push rods. This is my 1st time doing this and I do not want to mess it up. I want everything to go smooth. | ||

Vertical line is TDC. (static timing mark-module LED) 2 dots are advance. (dynamic timing mark-strobe light) | ||

and yes, thats the LED and ignition module under the round plastic cover. | ||

The rocker cover, covers the rocker box, the box is what has the tension on it. And thanks for the correction Gearheaderiko! | ||

OK, my front wheel is making a funny noise, sort of like brake pads scraping on the disc but the disc doesn't get hot or worn. Am I hearing the sound of a bearing going bad? If so, how hard is it to fix. Remember, I'm a mechanical 'tard and am barely capable of changing oil and Das Boot. | ||

Chicken..... Have you removed your front wheel before? If you have, take the wheel into a bike shop and have them remove and install the bearings. Then just bring the thing home and re-install it, making sure to retorque everything as necessary. | ||

Make sure pads are ok also - look at them how far down are they, any rocks embedded, wear, pattern as well. Then what Swampy said. EZ | ||

I've replaced brake pads before, not in Thumper, so I have a clue on how to do that. I read the bearing section in the knowledge vault and didn't understand half of what it was talking about. Oh, and the bike mechanic I talked to said I should probably have the sneaze pin frabulated and the ECM oil changed. Good ideas? | ||

yellow. just getting the itch to ride again. bike's been in storage since dec 1. will get it out the first weekend in april, i believe. 2004 zzr600 (zx600e-12, not the new zzr600 body) is my ride these days, but i still think fondly of my first blue blast and how much fun i had on it. and how it didn't matter if i dropped it because i got it used anyway. the zx6e forum is great, but i haven't forgotten about this one. | ||

Remember last week? I posted this picture?  And we had a midwinter meltdown....50 for a couple of days....I didn't bother taking a picture because I get lulled into this false sense of springtime and I was walking around saying this is nice but it is still mid February....Well....It's back!  Motorcycle season is again temporarily suspended... |
