A couple of years ago, yes YEARS ago, I posted about my '03 making a banging/clanging noise when ridden. It sounded like a rear bearing issue initially so I had those replaced. The noise persisted. I took it back in, my dealer tore the rear apart again, put in another set of bearings, and put it back together AGAIN and still the noise was there. Eventually, they diagnosed it as needing a new belt and pulleys and wanted approx $350 to do the job. So, I tore it apart myself and it sat in my garage until today when I put my new parts (rear pulley & belt) on. Guess what, the noise is still there!! I swear that it sounds like the noise is coming FROM the rear wheel. When I was putting the axle back in I notice the spacer inside the bearings just moves around in there until the axle is inserted. Is that normal? I'm at a loss and so are my local tech guys. | ||

If you OVER tighten the rear wheel axle NUT it collapse the BEARING SPACER PN G0311.T and cause the REAR WHEEL BEARINGS to fail ... An improperly adjusted primary chain does not help either ... TORQUE "INFO" and PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101 available upon request, just PM me and the "INFO" will be sent "ASAP" ... (Message edited by buellistic on September 17, 2010) | ||

Yes its normal for that spacer to move around without the axle through the wheel. Side to side should be limited though. The banging clanging noise could have been loose washers inside the pulley cover, but since you just had that apart, I'll assume thats not it either. Its baffling to think that something making that much noise is that hard to find. | ||

This sounds unlikely but could it be something inside the tire rattling around loose against the rim? Also, check any balance weights on the wheel. Is there any lateral play in the wheel when it is rotated? Does it only make noise whilst the bike is in motion? This is a poser.... Chris C | ||

It's very weird. It only makes the noise while rolling and it has a rhythm to it. When I had the wheel off, I was wrestling it around rotating it laying it down etc and never heard anything. This leads me to believe that there is nothing loose inside the wheel. My next plan of action is to take the axle out, take off the brake caliper, and put it back together. Give it a roll and see if the noise is there. I'm just trying to eliminate things at this point. | ||

Sometimes...... Brake rotors will make a humming noise just because they are happy. I definitely can feel/hear a hum from the front rotor on the Sportster. | ||

Swampy... If this was a hum I would be cool with it. This is a loud clicking noise that in turn reverberates and rings through the back wheel and swingarm. When riding at slow speed, I can grab the swingarm and feel it as well. I'm pretty sure it's not the primary as someone suggested earlier. I've adjusted it before and know what it sounds like when it's loose or out of adjustment. | ||

You have jacked the bike up so the rear wheel can spin free and rotated the rear tire by hand? |
