The Bike: my girlfriends 2001 Blast.

The problem: The bike starts and runs fine. She was driving it to work but it kept breaking down on her on the way back home. It would start up at work just fine and then after several miles it would lose power, die, and not start.

I've replaced the Boot, installed a new spark plug, emptied and flushed the fuel with premium fuel, cleaned the carb, and installed an inline fuel filter.
I know that cleaning the carburator is touchy subject around here but I've got experience and I was very careful. There was some gunky build up in the carbs which I cleaned out. I checked the diaphragm and made sure there were no rips, cracks, or holes, it was fine. The float seemed to be fine and functioning properly. I test rode the bike and it ran better than ever.

Then we rode to bike night last weekend and on the way home it dies on her again.
Well, I put her on the back of my bike, we come home and get the truck.
We get back and the blast still won't start so we load it up and bring it home.

After a couple of days I go out and out of curiousity try to start it. It starts right up and I ride it around the block. It seems fine.

Today I rode it a bit further, take it out on the interstate. I ride about 10miles at 75-80 and it starts loose power. Right at that time I get off the interstate and she clears up and I come back through town in stop and go traffic.... everythings fine.
I get home, let the bike sit for a couple hours and then take her back out. this time I save the interstate for the last bit. this time after a few minutes at 80 she looses power and dies.
I got off and pulled the air cover off to see if it's flooded. It looks a little flooded, there's fuel mist on the inside of the cover, but it's not bad.
I try the starter and she cranks back up! I put the cover back on and rode her home.

I'm kinda stumped. and now neither I nor Ashley has much confidence to ride the bike anywhere for fear of it breaking down again.
It really puzzles me because I can't figure out why it's only doing this occasionally.

Two things come to mind:
Bad ignition module. It gets hot, then quits. Cools off, then works again. Pull the timing cover off and when it happens again look for the LED light to flash. No flash, no spark. It may also flash every third engine revolution or one solid flash followed by several weak ones.
Bad gas tank vent. Pinched vent line or bad tank vent/rollover valve. If it gets worse the lower the gas tank volume, thats also and indicator. Pull the gas cap off and see if it starts.

Both things would get worse with high speed riding and both would seemingly fix themselves.

Its not a California bike right?

Not california bike.
I thought of something else, I swapped the spark plug wire with a new one from my S2. The connection was pretty bad on spark plug end. This seems to have really helped things. It ran much better on the last outing. However I won't proclaim it fixed til I get several sessions and many miles without a repeat of the symptoms.

I'll also check the ignition module. It seems like a frequent solution in similar problems

I am having this same problem. I corrected the boot (popped off on a backfire)
I reinstalled it properly and the bike fired right up rode to my work a few days ago and everything was fine no problems. (at night though so cooler) rode today to work everything seemed fine and died. Live roughly 2 miles form work and i rode most of the way to a dollar general to pick up a soda. Started fine. rode to work and it died 2 blocks from my office. I will check the cap when I get ready to leave but have no clue what it could be. I dont beleive my bike is a California bike but you never know. All I know that has been done to my bike is K&N filter and an iridium spark plug. my pipe broke (again) but have never really had a problem running it fixed or broken.

: D I took my bike apart yesterday after work and didnt like the way my spark plug looked so I called my uncle.

I put the stock spark back on, tightened the to[ motor mount, front ground connection and now the bikes running perfect. Same gas.
