I have an oil leak at the top of the motor and was wondering if I could just use high temp silicone instead of getting a new gasket?

There isnt any reason I can think of why you cant. I would see about cleaning the old gasket and reusing it with silicone added or whatever way suits you. No guarantee it will work, but there arent any critical tolerances you'll mess up either.
High Tack may also work depending on which gasket it is.

Is this the original pre-'recall' paper gasket?

Pre-recall, I don't think they were recalled, only up-graded! LOL!

Locktite makes some sort of anerobic sealer, no gasket necessary, I don't know, the hardest part is taking it apart and putting it together, $40 for gaskets just don't seem worth having to do it again.

Well right now $40 is a lot and yes it is before they upgraded them. It is only a lot because I have spent $500 so far fixing this bike and I am getting tired of spending money on fixing it.

Your bike won't be any faster with a new rocker box gasket. Why bother?

First-are you sure it isnt just the PCV grommet leaking?

Second-I feel your frustration. Unfortunately used motorcycles tend to give you problems, doesnt matter what the brand or model. Experience will give you the ability to look things over and spot where the possible problems are.

Good luck.
