I got my first bike, a blast, a few months ago. It ran great to and from campus. When I rode it home to store it for the winter it leaked oil everywhere. And I lost power and had some back fires. I cleaned it out over thanksgiving, there was oil in the air box and all down the left and right side of the bike. My initall thought was the dealer filled the oil to high but it still does it even though the oil level is lower now. Anyone know what might be the culprute?

Should I change the oil 1st or ad some dye to the current oil and try to locate the leak?

If true it could be toast - just exactly where is it leaking oil?

its coming from some where under the tank. It doesn't do it all the time, only after its warmed up. You don't think it could be a bad seal somewhere? I may have exaggerated when I said everywhere. It was enough that dirt clung to the inside of the air box, some got on my boots and legs, some down the cooling fins on the engine and a small amount on the exhaust, enough to burn slightly when its on.

when you say toast, you mean not worth repairing?

Clean the whole motor - take tank off as well, clean everything, then put together, ride around for an hour, then take tank off and see exactly where the leak is. Its probably only the rockercover gasket - the early Blasts had the old style HD gasket - known to leak eventually.

Hi, let me chime in here also, when you have the tank off check the grommet that holds the crankcase ventilation hose in the rocker cover, they shrink and get brittle and let oil get past also.

Here I am, still with a big smile on my face with no prospect of riding agian until April!

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll get lucky with a few nice days over break. I would like to get this taken care of before it gets nice out again. I'll let you guys know how the trouble shooting goes.

I replaced the rocker cover gasket. The grommet looked fine. Now I can barely get the bike started. It runs for a little bit then the carb floods with gas and the bike dies. Not sure what's causing this.

Are you saying that gas is running from the carb? Does gas run from the carb when it isn't running?

Did you put the push rods in the right spot? The exhaust push rod is longer than the intake.

Did the carb float get stuck while you had the bike apart.

I may have put the carb back together wrong. I am not a mechanic. Luckily my dad is, so it's his headache for a while. I'm back at school and the bike is at home, pitifully dead, with him.

The spark plug was also fouled up. Could these issues be from the original owner breaking the engine in poorly?

Also, I talked to my local Harley dealer and they said Buell parts would be hard to get because they dropped service for buells in an attempt to distance the two companies. Are there any good online parts dealers?

They keep this place afloat!
Quite a few dealers have websites you can order through, but very few have the ability to look up parts. Its good to buy the "Buell factory parts catalog" pt# 99573-0*Y (Insert your year at the */ IE: 2005 is pt# 99573-05Y). That way you just punch in the part number and see cost and availability or just place the order.
Harley only dealers can only order Harley parts (which does include some Blast parts). There are still HD/Buell dealers left.

PS 99.99% of all Blast parts are the same or interchangeable. So if you cant get the parts book for your specific year, dont fret. Just about any year will work.
