I notice a leak that seems to be coming from the cylinder base gasket. The picture below represents about 500 miles of hard riding.

view between the forks

Is this the kind of thing you'd expect to see in a Blast of that vintage?

How concerned should I be:

1) Enough that I don't sleep until I've fixed it
2) Enough to take care of it when the weather gets crummy and I can't ride anyway
3) Enough to fix it when I have to take off he cylinder anyway to do something that will improve performance
4) Not at all. Wash the bike more often and forget about it.

3+4

A base gasket seep, not a big deal, once the gasket pops out, then you will have to replace it.

To keep it from happening, when you start your bike, be gentle, it takes a while for all those moving parts to warm up and get cozy with one another, it you are rapping on it while it is cold, all those parts are cranky and fight against each other in a non-harmonious way resulting in the small parts(such as gaskets and bearings) to try to leave the area of the commotion for fear of getting injured by the much bigger pieces being thrashed around.

So remember, don't start rapping on things till all those big cold parts get that warm and friendly feeling.

Thanks, Swampy. I'm glad that this won't cost me any riding days. They've been pretty scarce this summer.

This does raise the question: What shall I do this winter? Cams... XB9 heads...

At least these are fun to think about!

Dried base gasket, try some Marvel oil - about 4 to 5 ounces, it may slow the weeping.

Mine looks about 10 times worse. I assumed all Blasts leaked oil? Maybe I should get mine looked about before the warranty runs out?
I only have to add oil every 500-700 miles.

Mine have never leaked, the tiniest base leak happened once, then a friend said try the Marvel oil, it re-hydrates gaskets - it stopped - go figure, but now I add that stuff about twice a year.

EZ the engine you sold me developed a base gasket leak. The Tip Over Video I posted was taken just after I replaced the gasket.

Tortoise: No, Buells (and Harleys) are not supposed to leak. If it leaks and is under warranty-get it fixed. The only place you may expect a 'leak' is at the PCV grommet. Some seepage almost always occurs there, but not usually seen because its hidden.

Yes, many, many, many years ago Harleys(and many others) had leaks (intended and otherwise) for a variety of reasons. This is no longer the case and is not acceptable or expected.

Remember...oil runs down hill...the most likely place to leak is the PCV valve on top of the engine.

Mine so far has had not even the tiniest oil leak...

Concur with the XB9 top end. I posted about that before Badweb went down and the post was lost. Given the recent increase in price of headwork and parts, the XB9 top end may be the cheapest way to go (if it wasnt already). Keep your eye out for parts and collect. When winter comes, you'll be ready!
