FWIW: Installing shims to .05 is just tuning to someone elses engine. .015 isnt going to make much difference and why a mechanic would fret over .015 without actually tuning is beyond me. Recommendations are intended to get you close. Results may vary!

That is sad. Someone tell them the Blast is still being made, just not claimed.

Question for you guys: I have some oil seeping out of my airbox on the right side. I assume that means I put a little too much oil in the frame when I topped it off last.....likely?

It's running great.

I have been pushing the @#$% out of it on some backroads with bigger bikes. I'm still getting 60 mpg, though.

This sucker is such a great toy. I wish there was a successful marketing scheme for it. Just not enough horsepower and cc's for Americans, I guess.

Defined,
Welcome to the Thumper Forum. Like Andychang, I'm new as well. I also have a 2009 Blast. It had 8 miles on it when a bought it a few weeks ago and I've actually had it for about a week and a half. Now it has almost 900 miles on it! The bike really does seem to break in after 500 or so miles and mine definitely feels smoother and sounds better. Of course, some of that is the bike and some is me getting comfortable on it.

I've also noticed that it seems to idle really fast after it's warmed up, like after I've ridden 30 miles and stop at a red light. Since this is my first bike, I'm not sure if this is actually an issue or if it's normal.

What I do know is that this bike is FUN to ride. I've been riding almost everyday for 2-4 hours and the only thing keeping me from riding more is my sore butt. The backroads around my house wind through this awesome, lumpy, rolling Michigan topography (thanks glaciers!) which makes for perfect twisty Blast riding.

Enjoy! THUMP THUMP!!

At 9,000 and mine runs great! You've got a lot to look forward to. It seems to get stronger as it gets older.

After a 1/2 hr riding your bikes idle should be normal. Try tightening the clamps of your intake boot.

HEY! easy on the EPA bashing. i'll have you know - i'll write every one of you up, and then i'll confiscate your bikes. except for EZ, since his bikes are "custom" in CA.

This is the type of stuff I do all day at work, except not for mobile sources.

p.s. I am kidding. There are bigger fish to fry, plus I'd have to go back to my glass house.

Anybody want to swap exhausts? I sold my Blast to a young guy that does not like the Vance and Hines that I put on it. He is looking for a stock exhaust system.

We are looking for someone in the Minneapolis/St Paul area that has a good condition stock exhaust system that we can all meet at someones garage and do a direct swap of the 2 systems. The V and H is about 2 years and 2,000 miles old and in good shape. Minimal cost for the V and H- maybe $50?

PM me and let me know if you are interested.

Wow, Andychang, sore nerve? Somebody's got a bad case of the Mondays. But... since you posted the link, now I've got a few questions.

"In fact, motorcycles produce more harmful emissions per mile than a car, or even a large SUV. The current federal motorcycle standard for hydro-carbon emissions is about 90 times the hydrocarbon standard for today’s passenger cars."

1. What do they mean by "hydro-carbon emissions"? The products of combusting a hydro-carbon (CO, CO2, & H2O)? Or something else altogether?

and

2. Obviously my 2009 Blast meets the 2004 MY standards, but where does it fall in the pollution spectrum? One thing that influenced my purchase was the gas mileage. Was I mistaken? Maybe I don't want to know the answer to this.

Dude. Of course it wasn't a sore nerve. I actually just had some work done to my bike that would make me a total hypocrite if I tried to call someone else on it. Haha...shh, don't tell.

http://www.epa.gov/oms/invntory/overview/pollutant s/hydrocarbons.htm

Any incomplete combustion product can be a hydrocarbon. Something as simple as gasoline evaporation, or someone overfilling the oil reserve resulting in a "smoking engine." HC are precursors to smog, etc. and generally not good for people who have pre-existing health conditions. Sorry the link I posted isn't the best.

Your 2009 Blast meets all EPA requirements for a motorcycle meant to be operated in NOT California, and is probably one of the more eco friendly bikes out there. California Blasts have an extra charcoal filter, I believe, amongst other things.

Is the Super Boot still around and available for purchase?

Swampy: I know you told my husband about just going to the hardware store and we could get stuff to do our own mod, but exactly what should we get to do it with?

I came right to the quick board instead of the knowledge vault 'cuz I'm looking for a quick reply. I've tried to PM Dan but have a feeling he's not lurking around here anymore or not selling it anymore.

Thanks - after all this time I'm finally feeling the need to "upgrade". I'm working on the 3rd boot for my '09...

Meg,
The hardware store sells a clamp divice that is used to attach two pieces of plumbing pipes together. Of course it is rubber with a metal band around it.

You can use just the metal band from around the rubber plumbing connection or use the complete assembly.

Thanks Andy. It makes sense now, incomplete combustion and evaporated fuel. I suspected the incomplete combustion component, but didn't consider the evaporation. Thanks for the other link too. I love pie charts!

Does everyone else have a problem with the tail light/licence plate assembly getting loose or is mine missing something? As far as I can tell there are only a couple bolts holding it on and the front is only held by it tucking into the underside of the tail section. When the wind catches it the thing pops out of the little grove. I am about getting ready to JB Weld the thing in place but if that part ever needs to be removed I might end up breaking something to get it off.

2000 Blasts' actually have a stiffener bracket installed that should probably prevent this problem. They were discontinued and I dont know why. You could make your own.
Part# L0543.T $16 is still listed as 'available', but I tend to doubt it.
It is one of the very few differences between any model year Blasts.

The two things I'm almost always guaranteed to see on a Blast are gas tank covers not fitted properly and license plate holders not tucked in.

Roysbuell,

I have the same issue on my 2005. The plastic piece that the license plate is connected to gets really really loose. I haven't take much time to diagnose, other than throw a couple of small bungie cords in to hold it on...

If you mean - is it a bolt on - yes and no. Can it be made to work - most definitely.

Would there be any reason to take the tail light/licence plate assembly off? I want to JB it on and forget about it.

Roysbuell, I don't think you need to take the plate holder off. I think it will bend enough to get some JB in there, it's pretty flexible. On the other hand it might be easier to apply the JB if you took it off. It takes about 15 mins' to take it apart.

Sorry, between what I thought and what I wrote it lost a little something... Would there be any reason to take the license plate assembly off in the future? I don't want to put it on with JB weld and have to take it off in the future and get stuck trying to pull it off.

Is there a tail light tucked in there somewhere? Do you have a pic from the rear?
