My brother bought a 2002 Blast with 616 miles on it! He bought it for a great price but it hadn't been started in over a year. Still has the original fluids in it. He dropped it off at my house today and I have the shop manual on order for it.

I'm guessing that the gas simply gummed things up. I'm not sure what my best option is at this point. Cleaner in the carbs? tear apart the carbs? I need to look at the fuel lines could be they simply need to be cleaned out. The big is in excellent shape (although the brakes do need adjusting)... Of course it would help if it was running, but then I suspect he wouldn't have gotten such a great deal on the bike.

Anyhow, anybody got ideas before I do a major disassembly of this bike?

Thanks,
Wayne

Replace all fluids, empty a can of carb cleaner inside and out on that carb, the jets, throat, replace carb line, etc., replace intake boot - old and dry - inspect front isolator - old - dry? Replace tires - old - Armorall seat and plastic, WD40 the metal (not brake discs) - check battery, check fuses, replace plug wire, replace plug, or clean - I'd replace, check bolts for looseness, generally inspect from front to back, when she fires up - enjoy!

Please Do Not pull the carb apart. The slow jet is what usually gets clogged. Pulling it apart "for a good cleaning"is usually pointless and often leads to more problems.

"If it aint broke, dont fix it".
The biggest mistake people make is buying something used then taking it all apart 'just to give it a good cleaning'. They usually wind up with problems that werent there to begin with.
Its got 616 miles on it. Its practically brand new! It should need nothing!
To effectively change the oil in the Blast it needs to be warmed up or the crankcase allen plug removed. I doubt it will show any oil on the dipstick (it usually wont after they sit).
My advice: Get it running. Forget the whole 'treating it like an old car that hasnt been run in years'. Its practically brand new. After you've gotten it running then go about doing whatever kind of maintenance you feel a practically brand new bike needs (thats been sitting a long time-inside or outside?). But fix what ever may be wrong with it first.
Throwing some oil in the cylinder might be beneficial (unless its already been cranked over). Changing the oil would be a good idea before you start but my concern is that the oil capacity is only 2 qts and it will only take about 1 1/2 qts with a regular oil change. Its very easy to overfill. If you do an oil change Do Not put in more than 1 1/2 qts until its warmed up and you can get a good reading (and it will never take more than 2 quarts).

Sorry, but I've seen way too many vehicles (including many Blasts) get messed up because someone decided to 'just go through it' especially before they've found out whats really wrong with it.

Thanks guys. Yeah, with the carb vs. fuel injection like it's a different animal than my recent BMWs or Uly. However, I have been known to tear apart a carb or two in my day (it's just been a while... a long while).

The bike really is immaculate. The guy had it stored inside a building, the tires and other rubber are in excellent shape. Apparently he bought it for his wife, who simply didn't enjoy riding a motorcycle (she also had horses). But, Gearheaderiko, you're right it's basically a new bike.

Actually just dropping the bowl, emptying it - which needs to be done anyway, then spray cleaner up into the jets, repeat. I didn't say take anything apart except that which is necessary to do.

Got the Blast up and going!

I tried just dropping the bowl, cleaned it up, but still it wouldn't kick over.

In the end, I pulled the jets cleaned all the crap out of them, replaced the fuel line, fuel strainer and put in a new plug. Once I did all that and put her back together, she fired right up.

When I pulled the main and slow jet they were both totally clogged, I had to use compressed air to get out all of the gunk (along with carb cleaner). But she's purring like a kitten now.

Once I bled the brakes, they started acting right, put some air in the tires and checked all the lights. I rode her around the block once I had her completed and she's running great. I plan to take her out for a longer ride tomorrow. I just wanted to test her now that she is running properly. I still have to change the oil before I give the keys to my niece, but I think she'll have fun on it now that it is running properly.
