Does anyone know exactly what size nuts go on the exhaust header studs to hold the header ring? Mine completely vibrated off. The ride home from work today was unbelievably loud! I need to run to Lowes and grab new nuts for it.

TIA,
Johnny

The book says 5/16" by 18. Which means the head is threaded fine and the nuts are coarse.

Thanks for the reply, Erik. LOL...yup, another example of the books accuracy. Actually, the head threading is course and the nuts are fine. I picked up a pack of 5/16-18 from Lowes because the diameter looked right. All they carried in grade8 or grade5 hardware was 5/16-18 so I grabbed them and found the threading was wrong. I went back and scoured their racks & drawers and the only 5/16-24 they carried was in a jam-nut. I grabbed a pack of 4 and they fit perfectly.

As I put the exhaust collar back on the header I found that my gasket has a chip in it about an 1/8" across. I buttoned everything up and torqued the nuts down as a temporary fix until I get to the dealer to get a new gasket and the proper grade nuts. Looking back I think that the nuts working loose were the cause of the header pipe cracking on me. It should be all good now. Thanks again for the reply.

Yeah, it didnt seem right to me either. I knew it was 5/16, but couldnt remember which was which.
So the nuts are 5/16" x 24 fine thread.
The stud is 5/16" x 18 coarse thread.

Lest anyone else have to make needles hardware trips. Thanks for setting it straight.

White Brothers question...
I just installed the wb exhaust. Ran the end open, and it was obnoxious to say the least. I then installed the flat end cover and it quieted down tremendously, haven't really been able to tell any of a performance difference, but are there any benefits or detractions from running it? From what I read that is the way it was designed to be run. Oh yeah, running 12 discs trying to get a combo of torque and power.

Real quick update, the wb seems to give me a noticeable decrease in low end torque as compared to the V&H the way I have it set up. However, while shifting, I noticed I am shifting a little later, right at where the limiter starts to kick in while accelerating hard. It seems like the limiter is kicking in a little later too for some reason. Think I am going to ditch a few discs and see what I see, cause I love the torque without having to wind it out.

run it with 1/2" longer bolts and a total of 23 discs and cap, use stock lower front mounting hardware, not their supplied, do not use torque cone, jet at 45/175, with needle shimmed at 0.05, air screw 2 3/4 out. A rubber grommet added to the rear hardware would be advised as well.

I'd also hang on to the V & H, at least for a few months. The more you set the WB up for low end torque, the shorter time it will last...seriously.
Follow EZ's instructions.

The Buell Pro Series exhaust was discontinued, but the D & D still seems to be available.

Maybe Hooker Headers will make you one or may still have one in old stock lying around. (Buell Pro Series exhaust came in a Hooker Headers box).

How do you know when it's time to repack the V&H muffler? Where do I purchase the packing material from?

I recently failed inspection by a couple db or so. My first thought was to post in the Wanted section for a stocker.

Erik says, Have you considered installing a cheap baffle in the end of the cherry bomb after reducing the outlet size? Or even attaching a stock HD muffler instead of the cherry bomb?

I figured an answer is better served here. Where can I get a baffle? Two years ago, it passed by less than a decibel. If I could get a lump of steel wool to stay in there, that might be enough. Would a regular HD muffler need modification to bolt on? Whatever I do, I want to be able to bring it back to what it is now as soon as it passes the inspection. Would enlarging the pipe before the muffler make things better or worse?

Thanks, guys!

In the old days there used to be a product advertised for a baffle that was nothing more than a big flat washer on a stick that you would install into the outlet of your exhaust. Quite mode you would turn the washer so it would restrict the outlet, loud mode you would turn the washer so it would not restrict it. You probably need something permenant to pass inspection. Just weld something, anything, into the end of your exhaust and it should quiet it down.
Maybe a bolt through the end of the muffler with a washer welded to it?
Hey I still have that laser if you want it....

If the link doesnt work just search through the baffle section. Nothing you need costs more than $10.They attach with one bolt and come out easily (frankly, it will probably vibrate out if you leave it in). Get the longest and you can probably stuff it with steel wool too.
If the headpipe is 1 3/4 then an HD muffler will bolt on and can be secured by a muffler clamp (I'm assuming thats how your cherry bomb is held).

I figure its just easier than fussing with the 'complicated' mounts of the stock exhaust and the hassle of R & R' them both.

I still want that laser if you have it! Wife'll give me a hard time because she'll think it's more junk, but she'll see the light eventually.

How's this sound? I drill a hole so I can run a pin (or bolt) across the diameter of the exhaust just after the muffler, stuff some steel wool up there, and stick the pin/bolt in to hold it just long enough to pass inspection.

My Cherry Bomb is a single unit, just like the stocker.

For me it would just be simpler to buy the baffle, throw it on, pass inspection (hopefully, but if you're that close), then pull it off and throw it in a box for next year. Still drilling only one hole.
My experience with inspection is that if you keep failing and try enough shenanigans, they'll never pass you with that exhaust or find something else (but this was 18 years ago).

I think I'd rather spend $8 on a baffle! (which is basically what the dbdawg is).
I certainly appreciate the find and idea though: )

Is there something I can do with my V&H? I still havne't repacked it yet but I was wondering if I could throw a baffle in there when I repack it. Also, what do you think about a Jardine can with a V&H header? I'd like to do that when I can find just a Jardine can. (and quiet core). Thanks

Trouble is, the end of my exhaust takes a turn, and none of those baffles look like they'd go all the way in. It's such a small amount of quieter that they want.
