HELP! I REALLY NEED TO LEARN TO RIDE AND MY MOTORCYCLE WON'T GO! So, I finally got Matt ready to take my motorcycle to a parking lot where I could practice but, it's idling VERY low and when he gives it gas, it dies. A couple of weeks ago he ran it out of gas. We filled it from a gas can (new gas) and now it's doing this slow idle, give it gas, die thing. Can anyone tell me what could be going on with it? Also, how to find the parts on the bike. I was wondering if it was an intake thing.

To find parts get a repair manual or parts manual.

Sounds like you put bad gas in it if thats the only thing that changed. Old gas will make a single cylinder engine like the Blasts run very poorly. Possibly contaminated from whatever gas may have been in the can previously (or dirt).

Its also possible that when running out of gas it backfired through the carb and split the intake boot ("Das Boot").

Nothing else has been changed or worked on? Just ran out of gas?

Yes, it only ran out of gas. I added some oil after it was warmed up but, it is between the lines. I estimate I added 100mL...200 at most (sorry, I am a scientist so I think in mL, L and such... Google says 3 1/3 ounces to 6oz). Splitting a boot sounds PAINFUL! How expensively painful is it?

Actually very inexpensive. It's the rubber joint in between the carb and cylinder. Two hose clamps hold it on. I'm not sure on the exact price to replace, but less than $25? You may want to pull it off and inspect it.

Should be less than $10, but buy two, nice to have a spare. Then there's always Dan's SuperBoot to think about.

Well, I always wanted to be a "grease monkey," I just have to find out what the darn thing looks like and I'll be good to go. I think I need to find out where to get one of the repair manuals. I like the idea of keeping some spare parts, too. I will take that to heart, Krj. Maybe it won't be so hard to find two hose clamps, either, Ylwblast. I DO know what those look like!

So, Matt and I went to pick up the service manual (which is HORRIBLE). We couldn't pick up the boot because they were out of stock. We found one at another dealership and we're going to pick it up and try it tomorrow. In the meantime, something is wrong with my Beetle's fusebox. I have NO RUNNING vehicles at the moment.

It was the boot. It starts up now and runs much better and it hasn't died on Matt going up a hill! I think we need to tweak the idle speed. Now, if only I could figure out my Beetle! Thanks so much! You're the BEST!!!
