I have a 2001 Blast i bought new about 9 months ago. It used to get about 50-60 mpg and could run for about 130 miles before fill-up. Now I only get about 40 mpg and can only go about 40 miles on the main and 20 on the reserve before it starts sputtering and wanting to die before I fill-up. Once I put more gas it runs fine but it only takes about a gallon to a gallon and a half. I really need some advice and help. Its my first bike and a little dumb when it comes to diagnosing them. I read that it could be water in the tank,but im not sure how that could have happened, but i added some fuel drier, still no luck. (Message edited by boardgeneration on March 20, 2009) | ||

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Boardgeneration! Do what Ezblast says, drain the tank and start over. Also I would like to suggest that you check the fuel tank vent to make sure that air can go into the tank. | ||

When I've drained my tank, I just put it in the lawnmower. Be careful not to *accidentally* spill it all over your driveway, that sometimes happens to me.  | ||

Might also have the tank coming apart inside, actually de-laminating. | ||

Put your old gas in your car, 2 gallons of old gas won't affect anything in your car. | ||

I'd like that tank, if I had a place to put it. A second tank for my Blast would be quite useful! I've been looking at putting fuel cells where saddle bags would normally live.  | ||

The plastic material in most tanks will loose layers, kind of like skin after a sun burn, especially if it has high volatility solvents left in it. I have gas can made of same type material and with kerosene it delaminated or skinned on me. | ||

Ok. . . . well, draining cleaning and refueling the tank did not solve my problem. Apperently water in the tank was not the issue, however, i was talking to an avid rider and he said the carb may be dirty and partially clogged jets could be the cause. Does this sound right?? Partially clogged jets would cause the bike to run bad. Dont believe the "dirty carb" myth. That would also cause the bike to run poorly. Apparently, you're still getting 40+ mpg, your tank just isnt running much past using a gallon of gas. So the issue isnt a running problem, its a gas tank, petcock or fuel capacity problem. Go to the gas station and fill up the tank. Then go immediately home and drain the gas into a container (preferably one you can measure how much comes out). Drain at on first, then reserve. Measure both. Then let us know. If its 2 gallons then .25 or more, then everything is okay. Much less than that, then there is a problem. Once you've done that see if there is any gas left in the tank. (there will be some a cups worth is normal, a half gallon or more is not). I have heard of one person that had a venting problem and his gas tank collapsed. Again, its not a running problem if what I understand is correct. |
