Wow, as much as I've seen this thread floating, this is the first time I've actually taken some time to flip through it. All I can say is...
Buell needs to kill off the blast!

AND COME FORWARD WITH THE NEW XB5R!

I'm sure the reasoning against it is in the cost. The XB12r is a $10,000 bike, and not much of that is in the motor, so swap the motor out with the 5, and it'd still be in the 7-8 range, which is just way to much to be competitive.

Good project, I can't wait to see the finished bike!

You'd think there would be a cost break if they bought so many frames - you know, and then with less expensive pieces elsewhere - a little motor consolidation with the early to mid 9's - cams, head, piston, oil gear, tranny - as they received from the Tubers previously - lol - it could well be worth the 7 to 8 g - the added reliable day in and out type of power, with great handling, lightweight, great mileage - a perfect commuter/toy.

You could have a FireBlast S and a Cafe' special edition - a limited number per year type of thing - CR clubman bar & signals w/signal mirrors,S headlights, gunfighter seat,SE suspension pieces (springs)& 7.0 fork oil, R pegs and rubber - all in Black, or blue/white/Black - lol - while the S would be the Standard Sport - Superbike bars, S everything. All in all making it a 7 to 8 G spread. The Single Cafe - XB Cafe - how classic - the perfect urban commuter toy.

Don't sweat it - know that feeling well - just my usual inquisitiveness - A Fireblast would be a cool name - graphics that fit the tank would be cool - like the Firebolts stock graphics -

first off thanks for the interest in my project. second, I have very little time. from 6:30 to 9:30 I am busy after that I have to keep my wife happy. I just dont have much time at all. I have been doing little things to keep some progress going. I still need a fuel pump, belt tensioner, kickstand, muffler, and wiring to complete the bike. i figure at least a month of work left more like two or three at my current rate. Any sugestions or slave labor to work all night while I sleep would be helpfull, thanks.

got to remember one of the blast's big allure is the seat height. My wife can barely flat foot on the low seat of the blast.
If they could come up with more 25ish inch bikes it would be awesome.. she can only touch on 3 or 4 bikes made and she's not all that short for a woman. she's just over 5 foot. Not average.. but in plenty good company.

Also.. could you make a xb5 with a good power to weight ratio? the blast makes what? 300 lbs? 350? the xb is a pig in comparison. I just rode a blast today and man its light and responsive.. even compared to my cityX.
What they need is a fuel injected blast.
I don't know what the blast hate I see around the internet is. its as good as any carbureted buell. I guess they get their share of hate too though.

whats funny is a blast weighs 360 pounds dry as quoted by buell and an xb12r weighs 395 pounds.

so, 35 pounds difference. then get ride of the rear cylinder, piston, head, ect and you have knocked a good few pounds off of that thing.

i get what your saying though. the blast feels extremely light. but i have never really felt it was very stable. i know many will disagree with me, but it isnt to confidence inspiring for me going through a corner on the blast when im trying to have fun. i can even see the cornering difference in how the gf rode her blasts and now is riding her R. shes not as affraid to lean it into a turn.

I will agree with the stability. We have grooved highways here. When I was doing 65 or so and leaning. I though I had a bad bearing or 3. But it was just the wind and grooves.
the 12r is that light? wow.
Yea.. that's strange. I REALLY thought I read 500lbs on the city X but sure nuff 390. Though it doesn't feel like it pulls like my heavier less powerful bikes. Probably a final drive thing. Shows you how much bench racing I do.

So.. knock off a cylinder and you're probably already lighter than the blast. though.. probably still around $8-9k.. unless they took a bath on it just to get people buying HD. Would definitely be "about g/d time" I just worry the frame could not be lowered enough to be usable to the 5'4" and under crowd. Thinner exhaust.. 16 inch wheels, on the low frame, probably almost to 25 inches.

If I can find some way of getting my wife on a slightly larger bike I would. The blast is kind of twitchy. My first bike was a 76? r60. I thought it was impossible to make a right turn without entering the left lane. The bike handled well, but it was so big and heavy I guess I was scared of leaning it that slow. I just thought it was impossible to make a 90 degree turn that short on that bike.
I don't care what the haters say. If you're short enough.. the blast is indeed a blast. Its not a "great bike" mechanically (it is american after all) but its got great geometry.. well.. once you ditch those thigh amputating mini apes (who thought those looked good or felt good?). Got to go find a set of "cafe" bars for the wife.

That is the Dunlop tires your using - switch to Pirelli. A big guy should probably shim the rear shock spring and front Fork springs as well as switch to 7.5 fork oil - does a lot to make the bike a firmer more sure footed ride - for a smaller person as well. A fork brace is also a good investment, a Works or Hagon shock would be a great upgrade for the serious rider, as well as a Works or Progressive fork springs kit and gold valves - all available - with the shocks being the serious investment - the Blast is a great basic bike delivering fun and smiles a plenty - in low speed situations it can actually out handle an XB, however, in general in stock form it is no XB and that is why a combination of the two would be a great idea - XB suspension, XB9 top end, tranny and cam would up the power to a level that most would find acceptable for a fun beginner bike and the bike would be a lot lighter than a regular XB - no oil cooler, no fan, none of that intake weight, etc. - a lot less parts would go into this build than what would be necessary for a twin XB. Replacing some stock parts with lighter aftermarket would pare off more weight - my Blast is much lighter than a stocker - lol
