so last sunday my dream came true when i finally bought a bike of my own, i bought an 03 blast with cool looking tiger stripes painted on it. but monday the day after i bought after only putting 20 miles on it, the engine died on me. when i tryed to start it it just clicked making a loud clank like something was blocking something elses why. so i took it to a mechanic and right away he noitced the crankshaft had rubed a hole throught the side of the engine just infront of the shifter. i couldn't belive it 2250 hard earned dollars down the drain. i knew there must be a way to fix it with out spend more than a few hundy. so ive carefully removed the motor with a friends help and am planing on spliting the case tonight to see what part have to be replaced. the way i see it i have 2 options: A replace the parts i need with brand new or B buy a used 05 motor which is for sale on ebay and part out my old one...

so i guess i was woundering are the 03 and 05 motors interchangeable?
and does anyone have any idea what casued this? i was going exactly 71 when it happened fastest it had gone with me in the seat.

Every year Blast motor is interchangeable. (A 2000 will fit in a 2009). There are some minor differences in a few miscellaneous parts, but buying a complete engine and not piecing one together, you wont have any problems.

Sound to me like the crankshaft nut cam loose and thats what came through the primary cover (case). 71mph is not fast enough to do any harm. Several here run their Blasts 90+, to engine redline, regularly : )
Splitting the cases is a serious endeavour and the fix may be much simpler than that. The engine will be more salable if you dont split the cases (but you can remove the primary cover).

Welcome 10404697!

Sounds like you have a loose crankshaft nut, it has happened to me, mine was run long enough to wear the spline off the crankshaft. To make the repair all you have to do is remove the primary cover, you did not have to remove the engine. The nut retorques to 200 ft lbs, to get that kind of torque you need to have a torque wrench that reads that high and a locking tool to hold the crankshaft from turning.
Good Luck, let us know how you are progressing with your project.

Definately start with pulling the primary cover before you go for a general disassembly. I think Swampy has a grip on the problem.

It would take an unbelievably serious problem to break the crank...and if it did, it wouldn't wear a hole in the primary...it would look like an "alien" came thru with much noise and commotion.

Anyways, welcome to the boards...

Yes, remove Y-frame. 3 nuts and a PIA.

Swampy had a grip on the problem?
"Sounds to me like the crankshaft nut came loose and thats what came through the primary cover (case). Is what I posted. Though its really petty to bring it up and I really just care that people get an answer (and hopefully the right answer), but did I become an A-hole recently?

Make sure you have ALL the bolts out. There is one in the center of the cover, be very careful to get them all, then a tap on the cover with a rubber, plastic or wood mallet to jar it a bit to get it off, but did I tell you, make sure you have ALL the bolts out first?

bolts all out i think that the crank shaft is making it harder to get off since it is sticking all the way through the primary cover.

ps 16 year old here

I think we assumed you had a repair manual.
Did you take off the clutch inspection cover and adjuster?

Look, the metal could be from the crank nut shredding the primary cover. If the crank splines are gone, a cheap alternative, though permanent, is to clean everything up, make all the necessary adjustments under the primary chain area, place all the parts back together, torque them down, then weld the shaft to the sprocket nut and the nut to the crank hub. It worked for me.

$2000 is going to be very tough. If everything is truly in good shape and you play it right $1000+.A lot depends on your extras. A Buell full windshield goes $125+. Crossroads bars will go $125+ too. Tall seat$75+. Corbin seat $200+.
Engines do go up on e-bay, but shipping costs$$$, but they are out there. Craigs list too, especially a bike with title problems. Wrecking yards or keep an ear out for someone who wrecked theirs. E-mail every guy on ebay who seems to be parting out a bike. RHarms, parts out many. So does Odliddle (sp?).
Look also for complete bikes cheap. Some go up on the other Badweb classifieds.
I do hope you keep your Blast, but you took a heavy hit on a used bike. It happens.
