whats up guys i recently had a new carb installed, about 500 miles ago and it has been backfiring out of the carb. it will only do it a few times a day and somedays not it all. any help would be appreciated, thanks

Why did you have the new carb installed?

Do you have an intake leak?

Is the carb jetted properly?

How is your ignition module?

i had the new carb installed because the old one was in bad shape. my mechanic said it looked like the previous owner tried to clean it or something and scratched it up real bad and it would cost around the same amount for a new one for him to rebuild it. but it still wouldnt work properly. as for the stuff i dont know, this is my first bike and learning as i go. since its a new carb im thinking it may need an adjustment, he went through the bike when he changed the carb and didnt see any other problems. also is it normal for the bike to idle a little faster when its hot? thanks

Well it sounds as if you have an intake leak ("Das Boot").
Did it run like this after you got it back?
After repeated backfiring the carb boot is probably shot now anyway (if it wasnt before).
Probably also needs to be rejetted to the 45/170 (or 175) and 2 1/2 turns out. The carb may be jetted stock which is too lean, especially for your exhaust.
Did you save the old carb?

No it is not really normal for the idle to be high after warm up.

it was a brand new boot and it didnt run like this when i got it back. i have the old carb, yes. the boot looks good though. what about this idle thing now, i just cant get a break.

The boot might not have been tightened again. Last time I got punched in the leg, (backfire popped the carb off, and my leg was right there) I noticed it was fairly easy to push back on. I tightened the hose clamp right there in the parking lot, and the backfiring went away.

Does it tend to backfire more when you go from idle to WOT suddenly, or is it sporadic and random? First case, it's the boot. Detach the air box and see if the carburetor twists in the boot. If so, tighten the hose clamp. Second case, I'd suspect the ignition as Swampy mentioned.

Idle increase and backfire? Air Leak! See above.

Mine still pops once in a while too, usually when getting warmed up so I tend to take it easy on the wrist-snapping while she's still cold, yet being a Y2K model I'm kinda terrified that the timing came boogered up from the factory.... Yup, still Blasting Vegas-style! The guys at corporate finally figured out how to block the site so I haven't been on for a while! Update: Took the flyscreen off again, never bought the Jardine, I couldn't bring myself to drop that much $$$ at once, I'm still delusional that I can do better myself... that and I about blew a tire on my truck, darn priorities. LOL! So the next mod will probably be of the Pirelli brand, Ah, well... Cest La Vie

Pop goes the carb boot! when its cold it requires a richer mixture, if you have any sort of intake exhaust leak it will cause it to run lean.

If there is no intake leak, set your idle a little richer. In the carb section, it shows you how to get to the screw. Turn it about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn out and that cold backfire will fade.
