BitBear, Gearheaderiko, or EzBlast:
I am new to this forum and I have an 05' Blast P3 and I have tried to find what tach will work with our stock ignition systems. I did stumble across a couple of threads a week or so ago but have not lost the links to some guys that were successful with installing a tachometer on the Blast. I know some time ago that there were dashes on eBay for sale to house the tach along with the stock speedo but is long since gone. If anyone can provide manufacturers part numbers as well where I can purchase the dash, tach and any other neccessary items it would be greatly appreciated. I would rather prefer a mechanical style vs. the digital tach one that would compliment the style of the speedo.

Regards,

logicscout@aol.com
Is the one usually with the billet 'dashboards'. Email him and ask when some will be up. $40-$50.
See the 'tach' section for a much wider range of Blast tachs that ever before!
J & P part no. 560-080 For single fire.

Read through the tach section, the J & P tach,Westech and maybe others fit the dash (dash w/speedo & tach). I think J & P Cycles is your best bet as the Westach is almost $200 and would probably take 6 weeks to get it.
If you dont get a response here from the people running tachs just email them directly. I'm sure they'll be glad to help.

Gearheaderiko,

Thanks for all of you help with this one! I have emailed them and am waiting for a response. I hope that they will still make me a billet dash. I am locked on the J&P mini tach and have received feedback/input from some of the users on this forum with installation/fitment information. I am going to wait to pull the trigger on purchasing the tach until I know for sure that I will get the dash.

Just so you know, I received 2 defective gauges from j&p. Both gauges were the mini tach you're looking at. They were defective right out of the box. The first gauge had the bouncing needle and the second had bad wiring for the light bulb which blew the fuse as soon as i wired it up and turned on the power to test it. If you buy one, check it thoroughly BEFORE you install it, especially the wiring for the bulb. In my past 2 experiences, the bulb wiring has been very poor quality.

To j&p's credit, they made it right by refunding my money with the second bad gauge, but they mailed the check to the wrong address!

Also, I've tried to contact the billet dash guy in the past and could never get a response. You should try to call him instead. Somewhere on these forums there's a number listed for him.

If you do get in contact with him, stay on top because he took 3 weeks to ship my dash after i bought one and would only respond to me after I started a dispute with ebay..... then he was suddenly on top of things....

The dash is nice though and to me was worth the effort!

Spacecapsule1,

Thanks for the heads up on the tachometer. I will make sure to check it closely before installing. I have tried to contact the billet dash person several times but no response via email. The aol email account is no longer valid. I got the eBay ID for the dash mfg and have tried several times to email him that way and yet nothing! I have searched for his phone number and nothing. Any help that you can offer with getting his number would be greatly appreciated.

All the negative feedback seems to be from the last 6 months. Maybe he's fallen on hard times.
You can make your own dash from aluminum, plexiglass, sheetmetal or a bracket attached to the stock dash. If you do a Badweb search for 'Westach' it brings up a bunch of options.

I guess what I will have to do is purchase another stock Blast dash to use as a template and the go ahead and order either the J&P tach or the Westach which is better and then go to a local machine shop and see what they would charge me to mill it from aluminum and then have it polished. I was really hoping to get one from the guy on eBay. I remember seeing them some time ago and dropped the ball on purchasing the billet dash when they were on eBay. I was hoping to get a phone number for this shop. Some others on the forum stated that some people has the number I was only hoping for the easy route. Looks like it is going to be the long route instead. Thanks again!

Have any of you guys tried the aftermarket all-in-on type gauges, with the tach, speedo, fuel, etc. I really considering getting one. Heres the link:

All, I heard today that my tach from Westach shipped today. I am using the Autometer black cup and mount, because the billet dashboards are non-existent these days. Anyway to the point, are there any special tools or anything I will need to install it? I don't want it to be here, and then I have to order some obscure part that prolongs the whole project.

Thanks!

You should have everything you need. Just make sure you hook it up correctly. Triple check the wiring and instructions. If the wiring connections arent solid, it will lead to inaccurate readings and needle bounce.

I just received my tach from J&P cycles and I was able to purchase a billet dash from a guy on the forum from Michigan. Now all I need is some help from someone who has done this that can give me direction with regard to installation. If anyone can provide insight on the wiring aspect of getting this tach installed it would be greatly appreciated.

This will also help...the relevant parts of the key thread...

Tach Installation Thread (Bad Weather Bikers)

I think the mistake was in soldering, not which wire was tapped.

Three wires at the coil: power +(white/black), ground -(black), and ignition module (pink).
That tells me only pink is getting the ignition pulse.

The brown wire is when using a Screaming Eagle ignition module (I assume Crain is the same).

- - - - - - -

Yes, tap into the pink. I messed up by pulling the pin out of the connector, and then soldering too close to the pin to put it back into the connector. Then I messed with it so much trying to de-solder the wires that I broke it.

I finally just replaced the last 3 inches of the pink wire, soldered everything back together, waterproofed it, and put the pin back in.

- - - - - -

I tapped into all three wires at the coil. It has everything you need, power, ground, and coil negative. Tach is not powered when your thumb switch is off if you hook it up this way. I didn't bother with the high/low dimmer wire (Dakota Digital Tach). Works like a champ!

- - - - - -

Sorry, I was away.
I tapped the orange/white (accessory) wire going into the speedo for power, and the black for ground, then took off the fuel tank and ran one wire along the backbone to the deutche connector on the left side just above the left of the airbox, alongside the backbone. (There are photos in the service manual).

TOTOLANDMAN... You really should not have any problem. Find the ignition module, see the colored wires, tap in, run them up along the frame under the tank and to the instrument area. I covered by wires with some split loom tubing to dress it out. If you need to illuminate a light in the tach you can find whatever you need in the wire bundle going into the speedo. It's been too long for me to remember details but I found the color coded wire for my light in a diagram in the Shop Manual. Let me know if you need a copy of the manual; I'll email it to you.

Can you point me to the Archive that give instructions on using a Buell Tach. like a M2/S1. I know these are set up for Twins but someone suggested installing the Twin timing cup 32402-83. Won't this fire the coil on the wrong cycle? And will this diminish the coil output because the build up time is cut in half? There also was a thread about using a "single fire" adapter?

Jadow: I dont believe there are any specific instructions on using the twin tach here on Badweb (or a lot more people would be running Buell/XL tachs).
J & P Cycles sell a adapter/conversion that could work (used when converting a twin to a single fire ignition).
The twin timing cup may work but you'd need to use a different ignition as the Blast module would read 3400 rpm as 6800 rpm and activate the rev limiter.
The cut outs on the twin cup are in a different place than the Blast and the module may not move far enough to accommodate timing. You could also add another cutout to a Blast timing cup. You'd also have to time to the correct cut out otherwise the timing would fire at the wrong time. If timed correctly it would be the same 'wasted spark' ignition the twins use, just there's no other cylinder to fire in.
The coil would fire just like it does on a twin, so output is not likely to be diminished.

It can be done and there are different ways to approach the problem and although the above may be confusing, its really quite simple. I'm sure there are other ways to adapt it, but these are the ones I know and are simplest for me to use.

I'm sure we'd love to help you get it done!

PS To take it one step further you could dual plug your cylinder head and use a twin coil!

Anyone who can assist with tachometer install with SE ignition?

My 2005 Buell Blast P3 was taken to the shop to have the SE ignition, SE cams, oil pump gear drive, and J&P cycles tachometer installed. I have been in/out of the country on travel and received a voicemail from the shop that he cannot get the tach to work at all! I am at a loss as to what to do! Is the wiring different for the SE ignition than the stock ignition? If anyone could please provide some insight into this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Yup, the Nova MMB tach installs easily, doesn't bounce, it's dependable, easy to read, fits the billet dash often found on Ebay -- and relatively inexpensive! I can recommend it. If anyone can supply a link to where the Nova MMB can currently be purchased, I'm sure it would be appreciated. Installation details for this and other tachs can be found on "Tachometer for a Blast" thread, a couple of archives back - June through July '06
