Hi ya
Okay so i was cleaning my lil gizmo yesterday after a great ride up to Hell's Gate and well low and behold the dam plastic is peeling off the fly screen. Now i tried to use the swirl and scratch remover on it and it just got worse and now it looks like crap. Just wondering if any one had painted their blast and had any luck with it??? oh and on a side note the dam horn fell off this morning .... dammit.... any hooo let me know your thoughts.

If you check the picture section you will see several painted Blasts, just redrill and reatatch your horn (welcome to that club - lol) - the color in your body panels goes straight thru - I'd peal off that protective plastic - perhaps the Blast decal? and buff up the plastic body work, but yea they would be pretty easy to paint! Littleone, Is a paint job peeling off the plastic, or does the plastic have something funky going on?

EZ, how many horns is that now? 4 or 5?

James-

The horn breaking is CLEARLY a fault of using too small a bolt to mount the bracket...

Anyway Jporvo it is something funky going on....
Ez I guess that i am having a blonde day and what i really wanted to know is what did people have to do to paint their bikes. Did you have to use a Flex agent in the paint because of the vibrations of the bike? What kind of paint is recommened? that kind of thing

Now with the horn thing it snaped off at the large bolt at the frame so i think that the mounting bracket sucks... oh well just one more thing to fall off my bike. i just wish they would stop falling off...

Littleone,

I can't help you on the paint, I'm more curious as to why you're plastic is going funky. Ask in the Bodywiork, paint and cleaning section of the knowledge vault, hopefully someone can steer you in the right direction.

I ended up making a new bracket out of some scrap steel I had sitting around. (Saro is funnin with us)

Saro,

I couldn't agree more, the bolt is much too small to hold that horn properly

Littleone- I've painted two Blasts with Duplicolor Wheel & Rim paint. (Graphite & Silver) It's made for rims & wheels, it's solvent, chip, and gasoline resistant. It's semi-gloss so it never looks fingerprinted, and it's durable and easy to clean. JProvo has seen them. It takes about 1 1/2 cans to paint all the bodywork. Only problem is, you're limited to "wheel colors".

P.S.: The hardest thing to get off is the front fender! (Without removing the front wheel...)

James - like i said i was having a few blonde moment and reread saro post and well i got it.... stupid horns....
with the stupid paint i think that, what is peeling off is the protective coat on it. I must of hit one big ass bug or a rock or something like that and got a chip and now it is peeling away dammit.....

Yea - know what you mean - there must be a dozen Blacks here in SF thats why when a Red bike became a good deal - I jumped for the chance to have a dailly driver that I would definately have to make different - yet deal with my riding in city. So the Decals are now gone and since it is my dailly basher I'll probably add some glow in the dark decals I was saving for the Black origionally - I'll probably change the fairing when I get bored with it but its only a little larger than the stock yet it blocks enough wind that I can here the keys rattle and tuck behind in certain windy passes - the led's are just briter and smaller - lolWell Have fun! I am wanting to paint my Buell Windscreen sunset orange. I don't think it looks good being black and on a sunset orange bike. I was wandering if there is a match for Sunset Orange that you can paint on Polycarbinate. I will ask at the local PPG store.

Yeah, I have felt better before. I have a fracture just above the ankle, a twisted knee and pulled muscles in my neck and shoulder and couple of bruises to go along with that, Other than that i am fine. Of course i can't ride yet so that is not cool with me.
I have to replace a few things on the bike and of course wet sand out the gouges and scratches. The worst part is that i made it threw the week with heavy rain and on the one sunny day some old lady runs a stop sign and nails me then she decided to keep going. Anyone have any tips on Wet sanding the plastic? The fly screen the bolts are sheered off and bad road rash and all along the left side of bike from front to back. so any tips would be helpful. thanks guys

This link takes you directly to the thread, but in a nut shell if you'd like to change the color of your bike - here is a new method:

Here is the short version of how to dye the plastic.

1. Remove all the stickers, save them if you want to reuse them. I suggest you do because it is hard to get the dye a consistent color where the sticker were.

2. Clean all oil, grease, wax, etc. from the plastic. I used simple green to clean mine.

3. Find a container large enough to hold enough water so that you can submerge each piece of body work.

4. Heat the water to 140 degrees. This is the part that is a pain. I just kept adding boiling water to my container, a large rubbermaid tote that I filled about half way with room temperature water until the water came up to 140 degrees. The plastic can melt or deform, so I would not suggest going hotter than 140.

5. Add in one bottle of liquid RIT dye, either use straight from the bottle if you can buy the color you want or mix colors together. I used a total of 3 bottles. I suppose if you wanted you could do some fades and such.

6. Leave the part in the hot water and dye for about 2 hours or until it will not get any darker. Keep removing some water and reboiling it and adding it back so that the water temp stays at around 140.

7. Rinse the part with cold water to remove any remaining dye and to make the dye set.

That is about it. Only time will tell how it does in the sun. I expect it might fade a bit, but you can always re dye it. The dye actually penetrates the plastic so it won't wash off. Cleaners with bleach in them could possibly effect it though.

Since I only have experience using orange dye on white plastic, I can not say what other colors will do. I started on my tail section cover as an experiment in case it did not work out. This of course dyes both the outside and inside of the plastic. Any scratches you had will show unless you polish them out of the plastic before dyeing.

I will try to answer any questions you guys might have, but I am attending a conference today, so it may be later before I answer. Fabric dye
Use a golf ball to test colors

Looks intresting to me - maybe I'll pick up some yellow plastic on Ebay, or experiment with the red - a green or other colors would now be open to us!

A friend and I just painted my Blast (so proud) and I might as well share how we did it!
First, like everyone else is saying, you've got to clean the pieces. Grease is hard to remove. ; ) Then the pieces were prepped with Bond-Aid:
Bond-Aided
Bond-Aid makes regular automotive paint stick to plastic. Then metal-fleck gray primer was applied. It was also used in between a couple of the top coats to add some of the shiny metal look.
Primed and ready
After the primer came the kick- metallic blue. : ) (about 8 coats or more)
Blue
It was really easy and didn't take very long. I'm not sure how well it's going to hold up, but it's hard to the touch and repels rain really well. I guess we'll see.

OK, so there I was at the local Wal-Mart. I went in to grab some gloss black Rustoleum, but something else caught my eye. One of the boxes said, "Sticks to plastic". Krylon 'Fusion', comes in several colors. So I grabbed three cans to do the little job, and also convert the yellow Blast to black. I've sprayed the flyscreen so far, results are promising. Took off the rest of the parts and washed them tonight. Will paint them soon. I think this might be just the ticket!

Have you asked about trading body panels with anyone? It'll look better. I have extra black parts (definitely a tail section I'd trade) and I know James has some stripped yellow parts that would probably take the paint better.
Body parts are cheap on ebay. I also know someone else with a black Blast who might be trade for yellow.

Too late, I don't have any more yellow parts. My painting skills with a spray can need work, but I think these are going to look decent. I painted the underside of everything this morning, got a couple of runs, but they won't show. Later I'll flip everything over and be more careful with the part that shows.
The paint seems to be up to the task, nice hard finish, but flexible. At least when I flexxed the flyscreen the paint held up, and when I put a thumbnail to it, it withstood the abuse.
I practiced on the flyscreen because I put on a windshield. It looked like a guinea pig waiting to happen.

"Does anyone know of an off the shelf paint that matches (closely) sunfire yellow?"

I did a badweb search for "sunfire" and "paint" - the question above was the ONLY thing it found!

I found some rustoleum "sunburst yellow" at Lowes. Under the lighting in the store, the cap looked EXACTLY the same as my flyscreen. Under afternoon sunshine, it looked a little different, but maybe close enough. I sprayed a little on a test piece. It didn't look as close a match as the plastic cap. Then when the paint dried, it looked darker and sort of mustard-colored next to the sunfire body parts.

That was out in the sunshine - now it's dark outside. Under regular and halogen incandescant lights, the plastic body parts are the ones that look darker and mustard-colored next to the painted piece - it's like the colors switched!

stupid colors!!!

"bumblebee" and "sunshine" (various brands) didn't seem to be too close. "safety yellow", "john deere yellow", and "daytona yellow" were kinda close, but not as close as the "sunburst yellow".

Since the caps don't really match the dried paint, and the paint looks different under different lighting, it would just be pure luck if anything that looked good in the store actually turned out to be a good match.

so I'll just bump the question:

Krylon in regular or Fusion paint. I think its Sunfire yellow? Painted parts will closely match stock.

I saw the fusion paint in "sunshine", but the parts I want to yellowize (frame & peg hangers) are metal, and the cap didn't look as close a match as "sunburst" anyway.

...but considering how the colors change in different light, cap color doesn't seem to mean anything!

thanks for the tip!

Then just get the regular Krylon it works on both metal & plastic. (I've used both, but one wont stick to the other!)
The Fusion I used was Sunbeam 2330. I no longer have the regular paint can colour.

I thought the "sunshine" paint I saw was krylon fusion, but it's actually the "sticks to plastic" version of the house brand at Lowes, "american traditions". "Bubblebee gloss" is the similar color in the regular type enamel. I sprayed both kinds on a piece of test paper and (carefully!) took it with me.

I found krylon at walmart. The regular type is "sun yellow gloss 1806". I got that, and the sunbeam 2330, and also a can of cheapo gloss yellow.

When I got home I painted some empty pepsi cans with grey primer, and then several coats of the two krylon yellows, the cheapo yellow, and the rustoleum. It was dark by then, so I compared the painted cans using a soft white incandescent bulb, and also with 6500K "daylight" flourescent tubes...

The cheapo yellow paint sucks - it's beige under incandescent light, and a washed-out shade of yellow under the 6500K tubes.

The other three are pretty close. Any of them would work fine for parts that aren't right next to the plastic parts, like the belt guards - but since I want to paint parts that ARE right next to the plastic parts, I'm trying to get it as close as possible with off-the-shelf rattle cans.

The rustoleum has the most gloss, but still not as much as the sunfire plastic, and it may be a slightly redder shade.

The two krylons both seem to be the same color, which may be a slightly greener shade. The 1806 has more of a satin finish (flatter) than the 2330. Besides being a little glossier, the 2330 also seems more "vivid", which makes it a better match. It also has the advantage of sticking to plastic, in case I decide to paint some other parts.

The american traditions colors I sprayed on the paper didn't cover very well (dark paper), but they're also in the ballpark - maybe a slightly reddish shade. Probably worth buying a can of each to get a better look.

I'll have to see how everything looks in the daylight - that's the real test. So far, the 2330 is looking like the best match - thanks Erik!

one wont stick to the other!

Good to know! I'm thinking I'll probably need to spray in some clear gloss to get the wet look that the plastic parts have ("depth"?), and maybe even mix different colors.

OK, so Krylon Fusion is NOT just what you're looking for to paint the Blast. It rubs off where the seat touches the tank cover and tail, and any sort of bungie hook will let the yellow show through.
Hmmmmm.... Maybe I'll go for the bumblebee look.

I tried 6 or 7 different kinds of yellow spray paint. I mixed alternating coats of different kinds, including some clear coat. I learned 4 things:

1. They all look different in different light.
2. Several of them are a pretty close match to sunfire yellow in daylight.
3. None of them are close enough to make an aluminum can look exactly like the sunfire plastic.
4. I suck at painting.

I ended up painting the sides of the frame under the seat with some reflective silver stuff that I'd gotten to do the footpeg hangers and swingarm, since I couldn't get a yellow to match the tail plastic very well. It sort of looks like cast aluminum. I used yellow fusion paint on the rear coil spring - it's really a pretty good match, as long as it's not on something that's right next to the colored plastic. I used black fusion on the back side of the flyscreen and under the tail, then followed with some other black while the fusion was still sticky - as mentioned in another thread, it's not "very black". It seems to stick okay to the backside of the colored plastic.

I haven't tried Krylon Fusion on my Blast -- yet, but it works really well on other plastic: Bonds well, chip resistant, goes on very evenly and has a very good, if not the very best gloss. For darker colors, you can use their Fusion "Mystic Rainbow" Prism Effect as a top coat -- essentially clear, it is very glossy and creates a "shimmer" that changes colors slightly in different lights -- much like a metal flake effect. The shimmer effect is most noticeable on darker colors but can be used on any of their colors. It is subtle and not over the top.
