Hey guys I wish everyone a happy and safe new year, I just got back from riding the blast on the hyway and it is not bad, seat is a little rouph but will buy a low seat used somewere do not want to pay allot this is my second bike like a spare tire, the blast had been sitting for years and getting all the bugs out of it and now it seems to be really good, I live in Boston so it is cold and I used my heated first gear 90 watt jacket liner and fist gear gloves and was toasty, I also have the gerbings pant liner and sock for the sub zero rides or near it, I just bought the 1125R and it must have a electical proublem because the blast heated my gear better, tomarow will go out again and going to be colder so I will se how it does with all my heated gear on, I do not have a car, I hate them. I wonder if I took all the money I save on gas and invested it, proubly be a millionair. lol. will let you guys know how it does. Mike

I`m sure that this has been asked before but I have`nt seen much posted on the future of the Blast. My wife is actually thinking about getting another bike for herself and doesn't want another uncomfortable sportster but also doesn't want anything with a lot of HP. She is only 5' 2" and needs a short bike like the blast but needs \ wants to have somewhere around 60 - 70 hp. Just wondering if anyone has heard if the blast was eliminated this year for 08 or if it is getting redesigned with a smaller displaced Helicon twin or possibly a single cylinder Helicon. ??
Would love to see her get an American made bike but don`t think it is going to happen.

60-70hp is as much as any big twin harley makes from the factory. that kind of power on a blast would be ridiculous (in a good way). I doubt your wife would want that much power if "she doesn't anything with a lot of hp."

Baggermike, riding in Boston, now? Don't you guys have snow on the roads now?

Dalton_gang, your wife will love the Blast. Just do all the recommended preliminary modifications: rejet the carb, Superbike bars, Avon Vyper Strykes, aftermarket exhaust, rearsets. I have taken some longish trips with the Blast with alot bigger bikes in the group and really have had fun on it, and actually prefer it over the Sportster.

I think her last sportster was around 50 hp after mods and it was a turd. She could never keep up with the rest of the gang. So even though the Blast weighs a bit less I figured that she would still want more power too.

I kinda figured that if she lost 150# of bike weight and gained 10 to 20hp at the same time that it would be just about perfect.

Go by a H-D dealer and have her do a sit test on a Dyna FXDL and/or the low rider version of the soft tail Dynas. Those bikes lend themselves to short legs pretty well.

I have a '97 Dyna that was easily managed by its first owner for ten years. She had a low factory solo seat on it and it was otherwise stock as near as I can tell. She was about 5' 4" or so, fairly lightly built. And thoroughly enjoyed it. Bought a new one in fact.

A Dyna will weigh about 600 pounds, have about 65 HP, will keep up with the pack when they are riding sensibly. If she wants to stay with them when they are riding aggressively, she needs the same kind of bike. And skills too of course.

Jack

Had a `99 FXDX and it was too big for her.

The only H D that fits is a lowered Xl or maybe a Vrod with out the forward controls (have`nt seen one yet).

5`2" 130ish# is tough unless you go to a small Jap bike

Hi guys rained yesterday so no snow on the road but it is cold and the blast did well in it started in 18 degrees and worked my electric gear very good was warm and toasty except my hands the first gear heated gloves were alright but if I had heated grips I would have been fine, now I know the charging system and battery is really good, came home and put it on the charger and went to green fast, surprised me, got a good second bike think my son and I will make something out of it like a bobber or race bike, but got to get thru the winter first, the garage has not heat so no work for me in there. Dalton:
60-70hp Blast would be a rocket (or an XB9).
The Blast would definitely be more 'user friendly' than the XL, but will probably feel slower than the XL. If you dont wind the snot out of either one, your not going anywhere fast, but the Blast must be wound out to keep up with the big bikes. The XL doesnt need to be wound so much.
The new XL does weigh almost 200lbs more than the Blast! Older XL's (not antique) were about 130lbs heavier.

My opinion: I dont have trouble keeping up with the big bikes unless I'm running with some buttheads that insist on doing 100 mph. My Blast is mildly modified and 90mph is easily attainable and sustainable (top speed is over 100, stock 96mph). Stock is good for 75-85mph.
Seats and shock absorbers make a huge difference and I'm doubting a Blast would even come close to a well equipped Sportster in comfort (though I tend to be partial to the laid back style rather than bolt upright or leaned forward).
I think a custom seat (Corbin, Sargent) and aftermarket shock would be in order for your wife. A new Blast tends to be stiff in the front end until broken in (in case you test ride one).

I'm nevrenuf's old lady and I am 5'2" and we have a Blast, I love it, feel safe being able to but my feet down and the weight is controllable for me. Once we get our financial situation back on track it would be nice to get somethings done to it to make it more confortable and have more umph. On another note when he wrecked the Lightning we took the money and bought a 08 nightster. Our daughter and I both sit on it flat-footed and it's not much heavier than the Blast.

Ok..i need some help.

A few weeks ago i went to ride my bike...Started her up..let it warm up for a few minutes..put it in to 1st gear let the clutch out..and BAM the bike would turn off and backfire into the intake..which i gather is cold a Cold Sneeze. I tried this a few more times and got the same results...I did some research and a few of you said it was the intake boot but i think it was because the kickstand was down..i feel like a dummy but i really think that was it because the bike would die as soon as i let the clutch out.

Well I let the bike sit a few days and came back to try to start it and it wont start...it will try but want fire up..Its been like the for a few days and im ready to tear into it...its tries to start but wont fire..

So i got the carb boot, 48 and 175 jets, #6 washers...and a new irridum spark plug..ez's velocity stack

Im gonna tear into the carb and replace everything...any thing else you guys can think i should check or replace while im at it...i want my baby running again

thanks for all your help

Old battery, when you get new battery - put it on trickle charger for a couple of days before hand so you'll have a complete charge. See my profile for the new filter number.

Carb: Treat it like your grandmothers fine china. Be patient and careful with disassembly and reassembly. Keep it clean. DONT adjust or disassemble the TPS.
Is the carb really that difficult? No. But you'll be pulling your hair out by just making a little mistake.

does the carb have to be off the bike to change the jets and shim the needle?

Carefully remove plug over idle mixture screw (drill it out carefully) and reset idle mixture screw to 2 1/2 turns from full in or for best idle speed. If best idle is more than 3 turns out, switch to a 48 pilot jet and re-adjust idle screw for optimum idle.

^ does the above mean screw it in all the way and then unscrew it 2 1/2 turns?

Yes!
When you screw it all the way in, you screw it in until it stops but you do swampyit lightly, do not use force.

Tell me about the Sprint battery, what is it, how much?

Thank you (everyone) for your tips and advice. I think that I`m just going to get an older used Blast and see what its possibilities are. If it looks like its the way to go for her we will mod it to her liking or start over with a newer / nicer one. And if all else fails I`ll just let the boys trash it.

No - the lesser material filters half .05 - .025, and allows twice as much flow - it seems that the Blast likes to take deep breaths - what would work for a twin is still not quite enough for a Blast - lol - so I had them take a step back in grade to a material that flowed more but filtered less - a tad looser weave - still keeps stuff out and I change my oil every 2000 to protect against particulate build up -
