I got it from a guy who had picked it up at an auto/motorcycle auction.
Keep an eye on salvage yards, impound lots, etc.
Also Craigs List and the like. There's stuff hiding all over the place.

The last Blast I bought was from a woman (who turned out to be one of my customers) that I chased down in my 'work' truck. Kept in touch and 3 years later, after it blew the oil pump, I was asked if I wanted to buy it. Offered it up here, no takers, so I paid her a fair price and thats how I got Blast number 3. Now bits and pieces of it are scattered all over Badweb!

Matty: Glad to see you're still keeping the Blast torch lit! Is there anything usable on that bike?

Swampy: Anybody can dance round the Old Oak Tree in the summertime. Only the faithful will be out there in Winter. Thats when you see the true believers. (Thank God I live in California) !

What was usable ended up on the race bike. If you squint you can see the one bolt I salvaged!
Actually I used the tail section, seat (note tear), swingarm, carburetor, and fuel tank too, but that's about it. The frame, forks, exhaust, and motor were all toast. Still managed to get it all together for less than $2k... which is about double what I wanted to spend!

All,
I just turned 4000 miles on the Blast. I have been riding back and forth to work every day the rain % is 30 or lower. I am getting an average of 72.38 MPG. My average is starting to dip, the harder I push, and the more confidence I build. Most of the uncomfortable vibrations are gone. Even those under 10 MPH ones... proper RPMs and a slight clutch ride : )

I have been doing some higher speed riding on the weekends. I have found a great spot here in Alabama south of Leeds that has a good bit of twisties on a steep grade. Getting there is a good 50-mile leg, about 110 miles round trip. It makes for a good Sunday stretch. However, I am getting frustrated with fighting the bike on a grade or into the wind, at 65 or better in fifth. The downshift to fourth at 65 is a bit unnerving for me. I can full throttle the bike and it bogs badly. I believe this is my same problem with the bike on the Interstate.

Anyone got a good stage 1 setup suggestion for me, please don’t point me to super loud pipes, I like to pull into the driveway without waking anyone up : ) Is there a stage 1 that does not affect my fuel efficiency?

Jimrich:
Rev performance can sell you a piston.
The Blast will do 80mph in 4th and run there all day and unless you're in the wrong gear (or live at altitude), it shouldnt bog badly.
Unfortunately the exhaust is the most restrictive item to hamper increased performance or power and it is the item that when changed will give the most bang for the buck. No other single (or easy) change will improve performance as much as this.

High performance doesnt have to mean poor gas mileage. Both of my bikes can get 65mpg.

Jimrich,
With the bogging on the highway on a grade sounds like there is something amiss with your bike. I would go over it again, checking things out. Start easy to hardest. I would look at your fuel tank vent hose first. Air filter, spark plug, fuel line, carb cleanliness, tire pressure, primary adjustment, clutch adjustment(maybe its slipping?)

I've got 4,200 on my Blast and I can roll 80 to 85 up a Blue Ridge mountain grade on the interstate passing trucks. It does't bog but the acceleration doesn't exactly snap my neck.

Gas mileage sounds about right.

Is there a jetless exhaust option? Something I can bolt on, and forget. A combo that involves a stock air box mod and pipe without the fuel hit?

JimRich: Several of the aftermarket exhausts mention nothing about requiring a re jet and will perform well without one. It is however greatly advised to change the jets and it really is very easy.

A free flowing exhaust is like free horsepower. It rarely causes a decrease in MPG. I got the best mpg after I installed the White Brothers exhaust without doing any jetting. Ran fine without any problems.

Doing the just a high comp piston or better yet the 515 kit is probably the best you'll do do without changing the exhaust (and may even increase mpg-but you'll probably still need to re jet). Anything else besides ignition (valves, cams, headwork, etc) will be less effective if you dont change the exhaust.

Pro Series cams may still be available for $75 and 'bolt right on'!

Okay Man!! Beck went and looked at the blast and has determined the fork in question is indeed the right one, and the correct one. PM me an address and it's yours. If you get in a hurry before I get it there, let me know. The only condition is when you take that tube out, you let me know what stupid thing I did or didn't do when I couldn't get it out. KLR Rider Testimony:

I wanted to introduce myself. I joined this site recently, and my
reason for joining is because my baby sister bought a Buell Blast.
I personally own a KLR 650,a BMW r100gs. I have bought a Yamaha
XT225,and TY80 for my kids. I had considered buying a Buell Blast
before for my wife. I like the design, and the looks. My wife didn,t
want anything to do wit it. I honestly believe had they been made 30
years ago a Buell Blast would have been my first road bike.
My size is what stops me from getting one now. That and I can only
fit so many bikes etc in my garage. I hadn't ridden one until this past
week end. My sister asked me to check on her dogs because she would be
out of town. I said sure, but I'm going to get your bike out and ride it.
There were issues right away. she bought this bike used from a
dealer w/1000 miles on the clock. I couldn,t get the bike to shift into
first with out grinding in the trans. It was idling way to high, and
barely had any travel on the clutch. Maybe 1/4 inch to the friction
zone. I figured out how to adjust the idle (carb like klr)right away.
But I couldn't find anyway to adjust the clutch. Reducing the idle to
what sounds like 1000-1200 rpm Helped shifting, but didn't feel right.
I finally saw a boot midway on the clutch cable, and gave it about 1
1/2 turns out. Now everything felt right.
I felt like a dork on this little bike. But I kept on riding to see
everything the Blast had to offer. After about an hour I started to
understand, and like the little Blast. This little bike pasted a smile
on my face. I'm sure I looked like an even bigger dork with my big grin.
But I didn't care I was having the time of my life. I will ride this
little bike again.
My sister just got her m/c license. She hasn't ridden on the road
much. This Bike is such an awesome entry level bike for her. But I'll
bet it's all the bike she'll want. I'm 5'8"and 265lbs. She's 5'and
maybe 100lbs. This bike will fit her well.
I'm not from the go fast school. I mean I own a KLR. I have learned to
have fun on a bike with in the speed limits of the road. That to me is
what the Buell Blast is all about. I even think it holds its own on the
curvey tight corners. I've been to other sites where you see KLRs for
example that someone turned into a super moto. Now I'm of the train of
thought that you would be money ahead to by a Blast for that purpose.
I guess I'm rambling on about something you all know better than
me,and I haven't really introduced my self.
My name is Mike. I'm a father of three. I have ridden motorcycles
since I was six years old. Or at least way back then I considered Honda
50s and 70s motorcycles. I went through a dirt biking stage,and got
into street bikes. I had a suzuki gs 1100 when my daughter was born.
I knew I rode this bike way to fast. I ended up getting rid of it. My
thought was I was going to die on this bike. I felt addicted to goin
fast. I went without a bike for 13 years. When I decided to get another
bike, I wanted a dual sport. I was thinking 250cc or so. But the
price, and everything else was right for an 06 KLR 650. I bought this
bike in october of 05, and have progressively kept adding to the stable.
But I have run out of space in the garage. So I,m elated that my
sister decided to start riding, and bought a Buell Blast. It's almost
as good as owning one myself. And if someone says I look like a dork I
can say " its my sister's bike". But I really do like the Blast. I
think the name says it all.
Thanks Mike

Probably prudent, as you don't stop fast either : ) (I have a KLR-250 in the garage beside my XB)...

Hey Mike, welcome. I've only been on a Blast for a year but I've fallen in love. Just a tip, the auto choke on the Blast makes it run fast when it first starts up and trying to shift before the engine warms and slows is bound to cause serious grinding. Don't ask how I know that.

Sorry guys - Mike belongs to another Blast forum - email me and I'll send you a link - I just thought it was too good a testimonial to go un-read - I get this reaction from so many different riders - Reg K. on down have always said that the Blast being so under-rated, always manages to surprise people and live up to its name!

I plan to keep racking up the miles! I'm up to 10,500 in just over a year.

Maybe I'll give it a good detailing..... Oh, I suppose I'll drop it off at Tilley's sometime so they can fix my engine mount and ignition module. I still have a year left of warranty. Maybe they'll know why gas runs out of the airbox and all over the frame and my leg while I'm cruising up the highway.....

Winter projects in order of priority:

#1. Convert to LEDs with custom designed LED blinker controller. I'm thinking auto-cancellation and all turn signals staying on dim as running lights.

#2. Build, program, and test prototype 4 of my Ignition Project. Prototype 3 had power/interlink issues. If I turned of the motorcycle but not the ignition, it stayed on.

#3. Change fork oil!, and other regular maintenance items.

#4. Paint swing arm to match the rest of the motorcycle.

#5. 600 CCs! (depending on financial allocations)
