Go ahead. School me. School everybody. Tell us how just turning the timing plate is going to tell you what the actual timing is. Tell us how thats going to help you diagnose (or cure) any other ignition problems.

The days of points and mechanical advances are long gone. There are at least 3 ways the timing can still be wrong even if the LED/static timing is right. Can you tell me what they are? Can you tell me an easier way to find out than taking the 30 seconds it takes to hook up a light?

I've been collecting LaFayette's tips, hints, and notes for years and I've found his advice to be stellar. It may be unconventional and go against the grain, but it's accurate.

He has a long history of helping Buellers and I, for one, don't understand the animosity towards nearly everything he posts in the Thumper area.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I know what it is like to try to time one of these engines with oil blowing out and into your face...it ain't easy. I have a relatively expensive dial-back light, but I don't try to use it on one of these Harley's. It has always been good-enuff to simply set the front cylinder to TDC and dial the plate to where my LED just goes off and whamo. You can roll it back and watch as it comes up on the mark again for when the light goes out to check it if you like.

I even bought the little plastic lens and it filled up with so much oil you couldn't see though it for more than a few seconds.

But one thing I do know is that that Buellistic has learned to think out of the box over the years of dealing with these engines since he was a flat track racer. Some of these things aren't in any 'book', so they may be beyond what many HD technicians would understand.

Yes - and Erik has been racing the Blast seriously and has been looking for that every last inch of power as I have for a while now and this bike was raced unsucessfully as a flattracker because HD stayed in the box. I'd say they could learn from each other and all that is needed is patience.

You’ve just gotta love a mixture of testosterone, gasoline, pride, and maybe large amounts of alcohol directed in the pursuit of horsepower.

Reads like the good parts of an American Chopper episode. Erik can be senior with tried and true by the book, and LaFayette can be junior out of the box, and unconventional. Question is who's gonna be Mikey?

As a newbie lurker I am happy to have all of you

Elsewhere on Badweb they're having discussions about valve overlap, exhaust waves and compression ratios. Here we have heated arguments about whether it is a good idea to check...your...timing. Wow! I am so proud to be part of this.

Where's the line for the KoolAid?

Jeeeeepers! LaFayette

Don't you know when enough is enough? Thankfully... it looks like the name calling has ended, that sort of thing does not belong here and it was making this forum resemble the rants on craigslist. Maybe I'm taking this the wrong way but... disparaging Buell, the corporation and the manual, took away from this forum as well. We are here because we love this stuff, having someone consistently run it down is like someone calling your mama ugly. Whats a first time visitor to think when he/she is considering buying a Buell? I don't know if a custodian has ever edited one of my posts but if I made disparaging comments about someone here or used inappropriate language, I would have no right to be upset about the editing or any comments that followed.

I lurked on this forum for a year before I actually registered. I learned a lot from you, Erik, EZ, Swampy, Joey, Tony, James,... dang.. too many of you all to list. There is some "product improvement" on my Blast as well as advice from Erik and others.

When I joined Badweb, my first couple of posts were debated by Erik, (oil viscosity, rear brake usage) just the other day I advised someone that the blast took almost 2 quarts of oil. Erik was quick to correct me, or rather "qualify" my answer and give a more correct answer. I didn't take it personally, if he was right, he was right! (though I'll never concede that rear brake usage is bad) in fact the spirited debates that ensued and "professional" level that he held himself to has resulted in what I would call a friendship between Erik and myself and I would be very proud if Erik felt the same about me. Thats why I felt comfortable teasing Erik and Tony for talking about their butts on the "where to buy" thread.

Opinions are like sphincters, everyone has one. I won't say anyone is wrong, but sometimes it is best to look at the competence or skill level of the person asking the question and give an answer or advice that isn't over their head. Deferring to the manual is always best, yes it has some flaws but I have found it to be 99% correct and a very useful tool.

Sorry everyone if I am ...

Respectfully.
Chuck

I would like to note: Erik is correct though about making sure your timing is correct with a timing light - also for fine tuning - it becomes a must. Laf.s will definately get you in the ballpark though.

Blast it... It's at it again. Well, after all my time spent working on the ignition timing, it appears my Blast isn't timed right. Or there may be other factors I am unaware of. I thought I did the static timing right, but now my Blast is starting to chug and backfire in speeds exceeding 55mph. It runs totally fine under those speeds, but I drive 50 miles a day on the 101 freeway in the SF Bay, so I need a working 50+mph speed range to travel in. It's sometimes hard to hear if it's backfiring at freeway speeds, but I can feel the bike lurch forward, and I can hear what sounds like a click or pop in the region of the exhaust manifold (where the pipe just comes out of the cylinder). Is the timing off or is there a fuel mixture problem or something else? I haven't even removed that brass plug, so it's all at factory settings. I think I've noticed that if I slide the timing module forward (toward the front wheel), the backfiring stops at the high speeds, but starts really bad at low speeds constantly. It's a very slight movement of the module. Should I get a timing light from harbor freight and perform a dynamic timing or does anyone think it could be other problems?

More than likely you have a malfunctioning ignition module. If it is running fine and then all of a sudden it doesn't and then it starts running fine again....well? If everything remains constant, it should run like it is supposed to. Changing the ignition timing will make a ghange but that change should remain constant.

After saying all that, please, go back, check, your tank vent, carb coupler, and exhaust pipe flange first. Then check you wiring connections, and condition, especially where the wire makes the bend coming out of the nose cone at the ignition module.
Then I would place the ignition module as suspect. when you remove the module, inspect the timing cup for damage or loosness. My experience with them has been that after replacing everything else with known good parts, that was the last thing changed and it cured all the intermittant problems I was having such as backfiring at speed, surging, losing power and finally total ignition failure.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

Thanks for the information. I will check those things over the next week or so. It's really puzzling. For instance, right after I last posted, on my way home, the bike was backfiring like crazy, nearly to the point of stalling quite often. However, this only seems to happen right after I start it up and get moving. This condition is made 4x worse if I start going down an incline (as I do here in Cal). When I leave in the morning I go down a steep hill, and whether I pull in the clutch and just ride it down, or whether I keep it in 5th, it gets really fussy and does lots of chugging (accompanied by lurching me forward). It never did this in Arizona... Maybe because I'm at sea level now might I need to adjust mixture or something? Once I've gone a few miles, this stops. Is it normal that the Blast is this fussy at startup? It didn't used to be. I'll go back to my yamaha until I get this resolved, but I do love the great gas mileage I get with the Blast. Plus it makes lots of noise which is great while I'm lane splitting in San Rafael traffic.

Toni

Das boot! has become a chant here, he means to check the boot It is a short piece of rubber hose that joins the carb to the intake adapter.. it would be located between the carb and the head. If this is cracked, loose or leaks it will make the bike go lean, leading to eventual failure of the motor. This "boot" is one of the few weak links on the an otherwise trouble free bike.

Yes the Blasted boot. Check the top of the Diagnosing problems page for instructions, and symptoms. I bought my 05 used after being stored for a year, the boot was probably bad the entire time I owned it. After the bike did smaller versions of what you have explained it left me at work. I took it to the garage, and sure enough 10 dollars and a couple of hours and I could have had done it myself.

The bike kicks tail now. I have had no other problems; it has been about 2 weeks. The bike runs better than the day I bought it!
