The (latest) updated part from Buell solves the problem.

(Updated (5 volt regulated) speedo sensor part number: Y0199.K Should be around $75)

If you get stuck with an older model number, email me offline before putting it in.

Hey, thanks for the quick help. So where about (on the bike) can I locate the speedo sensor.

And, who can I order the service manual for this bike from. Thanks again

Probably the same place on your blast as on my Cyclone, top of the engine case, just rear of the starter, left hand side. It is held in by an allen head bolt, just remove the bolt and wiggle the sensor assembly out (looks like a big hard stopper with an o-ring on it). It has a wire on it that goes to a deutsch connector under the seat.

Kerryb,
Where are you approximately located? Your profile shows you on a Blast.
The speedo sensor will be a smallish black plug-looking item stuck into the top of the tranny behind the cylinder and below the carb. There will be one wire sticking out of it and one allen-head screw holding it in. There is an o-ring that will have to be overcome to remove the sensor assembly. Follow the wire to the other end where you should find a connector.

If your local Buell shop does not have a service manual in stock, then first "shame on them", and if they do have one in stock, then "good on them", but if not then any of the dealerships with banner ads on the site here can order a manual and a new updated sensor assembly for you.

The hardest part will be removing the connector and re-routing the wiring.

If your bike is still under warranty then have your local dealership swap it out for you, but plan on that taking one to three trips to the dealership to get it done. The "official" procedure used to be to wipe off the end of the sensor and retest, along with checking/testing the speedometer itself first before changing out the sensor assembly. I don't know if this is still the official shop way to do things. Hopefully they'll just change out the sensor for you and you "should" be on your way in well less than an hour. Takes me less than 15 minutes in the parking lot with one wrench and a fresh tie wrap to swap out the one on my M2. Practice makes perfect.

I live in Santa Cruz, CA. The Blast is my wife's bike. I also have a HD XL1200S (getting a top end job) and a Triumph Tiger 955i (waiting for a new chain).

So, I'll call my local shop and see if they have the updated sensor in stock. I'll let you all know if that is the fix. Stay cool

Ya know, I REALLY dig the Blast and I REALLY think the factory did some cool things within a given set of design and cost constraints. But this CA Evap thing drives me NUTS.

It has ZERO affect on performance if done properly - yet on Blasts it can cause outright stalling. I hate to pointlessly yank emission stuff. I don't feel it's a pointless yank on the Blast.

"Death or serious injury" is what seems to come to mind when a bike keeps dying on LA freeways...

Uhhh... If the odometer is NOT on, then it is NOT the speedo sensor. If the odometer IS on, but not registering miles, then it IS the speedo sensor.

From the Book:
REMOVAL
1. Remove seat. See 2.28 SEAT.
2. See Figure 7-86. Locate and unplug speedometer sensor 3-place connector [65]. Connector is located in the right side frame cavity.
3. See Figure 7-87. Locate speed sensor on engine case right side, to the rear of the starter solenoid.
4. Remove speed sensor mounting screw.
5. Remove sensor with o-ring from engine case cavity and pull wires down through frame.
INSPECTION
NOTE
Debris on speedometer sensor can result in false speedometer reading, especially during break-in. Always clean and troubleshoot speedometer sensor and verify proper operation before replacing speedometer.
Clean any debris from speedometer sensor.

INSTALLATION
1. Install speedometer sensor in engine case.
2. Install screw and tighten to 80-100 in-lbs (9-11 Nm).
3. Connect connector [65] in right side frame cavity.
4. Install seat.

I'll finally have a chance to deal with this tomorrow, so I'll be sure to let everyone know what the results are. Stay cool.

BC rider has instructions with pics
http://bcrider.com/blast1.html for taking the vent from the airbox and rerouting elsewhere.
Also some good pointers on other things as well. Lorraine is one of the first Blast riders and her ole man is very into his Buell as well - together they have created a very nice and usefull Buell home page. Should help with the 49 state part. The rest is just delete lines to canister and canister - reroute gas vent line to go where other drain lines go, and apply a rubber line boot plug cap to where the other line goes to the carb - 59cents at any auto parts store for a pac of 6 - lol - and your done (sorry - realized I hadn't totally answered the question till after I read my answer - lol)

49 state ing
The simplest way is: There are 3 rubber hoses that go to the charcol canister under the seat.1 fat, 2 skinny.
Pull the fat one off & plug the hose.
Pull the skinny one that is marked 'to carb' on the canister & plug it.
Pull the other skinny one off thats marked 'to tank' on the canister and leave it unplugged.(you may also take the time to feed it down through the frame so it drains to the ground).
Tie the plugged hoses to the frame.
Thats the simplest way to do it.
Now that its done you can, if desired, pull off the canister, follow the carb line back to the carb and actually plug it at the carb. And then,if your really ambitious, you can do the PCV to air cleaner hose elimination mod & lose a bunch extra pcv hose.

(BTW I like to mention the super easy way to do it because it takes only five minutes and anybody can do it-the cleaner way to do it can be confusing to the novice & those as yet unfamiliar with the bike.Besides-as Saro put it-not doing it can cause serious injury or death!))

Another strange speedo problem/gremlin....I went for a ride with my wife yesterday. She was on the Blast and I was on my S3T. I let her take the point so I can keep an eye on her technique (she's still a newbie). As we're cruising along, I have to do 60mph in a 35 zone to even stay close. Once I finally get her to pull over, she states that the speedo was reading 35mph. She turns off the bike and restarts. Everything seems to be fine. But I'm worried that the problem will re-occur when she's by herself. Any ideas from the throbbing brain here at BWB???

Thanks!!!

She's a SPEED DEMON!!!!

Seriously, Check the speedo sensor for cleanlyiness and moke sure that the wires have good tight connections, and that the speedo sensor is locked down tight. That's a weird one allright... I'll look at the manual, but I'm pretty sure that the only place the speedo gets a speed reading from is that sensor. Maybe look at the connection into the speedo as well.

Hey, time to knock the cobwebs off this dusty old thread.

With the help of bad-webbers, I now know that the funky little black box zip tied to the shock mount under the seat of my 2000 Blast is actually a spedo recalibration box. Most likely placed there during the pulley recall. (thank you all by the way)

Here's my question. What is this box compensating for? In other words whats different on the 2000? Is it the spedo, the speed sensor, or a gear in the tranny?

Speedo is the same part # with additional suffix # at the end(.01A7) for later models. Speed sensor is a completely different part number. Indicates the speed sensor is different but why throw in the black box rather than change the sensor?
I doubt the gear is different.

Short answer-I dont really know but I think it'd have to be the speedo.

The black box compensates for the different pulley size on the 2000 model Blast. Its a larger diameter than the original pulley. This changes the final drive ratio. Since the sensor "counts teeth" of the 5th gear then calculates the speed by multiplying teeth by the rpm and gear ratio, if the gearing changes, the final calculated speed is wrong. Without the box, your speedo would read slower than you actually are travelling, which is illegal (its ok for it to read *faster* than you are really traveling though! heh)

But the question was: Which part did they change for 2001 and on Blasts without the black box to account for the bigger pulley?

Seems to me the speedo would be the intelligent part and the sensor just a counter.

Thats what I was wondering? Why the hassle of the black box if a sensor swap would do it? But you never know??? At work the more educated the engineers are... the more bizzare and complicated their solutions to small problems will be.

I see speedos on ebay every now and then, I might pick up the next cheap one I see just to test it out. Or maybe I'll try to swap between my 2000 and my 2002?

Second question??? does the speedo remember your mileage or is that info stored somewhere else?

I'm confused about the speed sensor rewiring kit.

My speedometer has been flaky so I ordered kit Y0199.K as recommended here, but there are no instruction for the Blast. The kit seems to steal a 5v regulated source from the ECM on the other Buells, so where does it come from on the Blast?

I would recommend emailing reepicheep.
Part # I have is 74431-01B and the books I have dont mention any rewiring kit and I dont know why they'd have a re wire kit for the Blast. That post is over 3 years old and its the first time I've heard of a re wire kit.
I could be wrong, but I'm a little suspect of that info pertaining to a Blast.

I saw the thread but did not know enough about the Blast... nor in fact about the new sensors.

If it is the correct updated part for the Blast, it should have updated instructions, and they should be "right".

If its and old part, you just need a regulated input... 5v through 12v is fine. A hacked up and weatherproofed modern cell phone car adapter would probably work great.

Reepicheep:

The SPEEDO Sensor ie: SENSOR,speed PN 74402-95(have a 2000 BLAST Parts Book)
is the same for Sportsters, TUBE FRAME
BUELLS, and BLAST/XB Models ...

There were problems with the early sensors
and who knows how many times it has been
up-dated ...

Under the NEW BMC "BUELLschitte" parts numbering system you can not tell how many
times a part has been up-dated unless you go back in the BLAST parts books from 2007 back to 2000 and check part numbers ...

Using the HARLEY-DAVIDSON Parts Numbering
SYSTEM which dates back to the early 1920's, a PARTSMAN or anyone who ever was a PARTSMAN can look at the PART NUMBER and tell where it is used on the Motorcycle and the FIRST YEAR it was USED and how many times it was improved ...

Example: The oldest part sitll being made
and used on the BLAST is
BUSHING,piston pin PN 24331-36 ...
ie: 24 = bushing
331 = basic PN(2 sizes,331 STD and
332 0.01 over size)
-36 = first year it was used
NO" HI-CASE LETTER after -36(A thru ?)
indicating it never had to be improved, the enginer who designed this part did good ...

When the RE-CALL was done on the BLAST
Rear Sprocket(went to a LARGER one) the
RE-CALL KIT had ELECTRONIC PART that went in between the SENSOR(close to sensor) and the SPEEDOMETER so would read correct the speed ...
