I just purchased a 2003 blast with 2100 miles a few days ago. Its my first bike and i'm currently riding on my permit.

the person i bought the bike from said he changed the oil at 2000 miles with synthetic 10w30 weight oil. is that too light?

should i be looking at something more like 20w50 (i remember reading that somewhere)

after riding around for a bit yesterday i noticed a slight burnt oil smell. is this typical in the single cylinder engines? could it be from the low weight engine oil?

any tips or advice would be appreciated!

Welcome to the Badweb Joeyt17!

For the money I would run a Synthetic oil, but with a viscosity of 15W-50, or a 20W-50.

You might want to check for an oil weep or leak on a hot engine part to locate the hot oil smell. Also check the area where the dipstick is as overfilling oil onto the frame will have oil dripping onto the top of the engine.

I had a similar oil smell from my Blast too. Look on the top of your "valve cover" (right side, under the tank) follow a rubber hose to a plastic elbow "breather" that enters the valve cover via a rubber bushing. I'd be willing to bet that this rubber bushing is hard as a rock by now and maybe even breaking apart.

Also, do a search for re-routing the crank case vent hoses out of the air box and away from the carb.

Thank you for the responses.

I installed 15w50 mobile 1 tonight and searched for leaks.

swampy you may have hit the nail on the head, before i changed the oil i looked around the bike and saw a little oil around the dipstick. i cleaned it up, added about 1.5 quarts and will check her again in the morning.

1.5 quarts is not enough, the blast takes just a hair under 2 quarts, with a filter change (I think you will have about 2oz. left in the bottle when done). I think the manual for my bike said 1 quart but that isn't right.

Only add 1.5 quarts! Add more and its likely to be overfilled. If you actually drain the crankcase you can get the full 2 quarts out.
