What "i" did was take one to a Mom & Pop
Hardware Store and get allen screws ...

Then it is a lot easier to take things apart then ...

You can leave the CARB. on the bike because the allen screws are easy to get out ...

Parts manual doesnt list the size and for me to find out, I'D have to go out to the garage and pull a screw and match it up and I'm not gonna do that till next week!

Pull another screw out and replace all 4 with Allens as suggested by Buellistic!

They are 4mm fine, 1.3cm(aprox.) long. I had to get a nut and cut it to length on the grinder.

I have a box of the stock screws...LOL..I could send you one

Hello fellow blasters. I could really use some help. I am trying to get a new subframe onto a blast frame. However, I only have the frame without forks, wheels, etc. The subframe has been removed and the mounts ground off. I need to make a 'jig' to hold the frame on my flat table, but I'm not sure how to level it front to back. I thought I would just get the measurements from my local harley dealer, but they are out of stock on blasts with no definite delivery date. I think all I need is the answer to one question...Is the fuel filler cap on the tank level or tilted fore/aft? Alternatively, if anyone knows the rake of the steering neck (not the forks), I could use this measurement as well. I hope I am making myself clear, but I could post a picture or diagram if it helps.

On my 2000 Blast, the fuel filler cap is approximately level (without me onboard)

Speaking of Blasts..I rode my little beastie to work today.

a 2.1 mile trip , to work, home, work, and home again, total 8.5ish miles.

After I got home, I went inside for a few minutes, went back inside, and sw a 4" puddle of oil under my primary.

OH SHOOT! sez I, rather proud of the fact that in the 7 years I'd owned the Blast, and 3 years owning my Superglide, *neither* had ever leaked a spot of oil.

Resigning myself to the inevitable "Its made by Harley, right? Its supposed to leak" comments from my rice-burning friends at work, I took a look under my primary.

Directly adjacent to the chain tensioner bolt, TWO primary cover bolts had come out, one on each side of the tensioner. Both bolts came out presumably on the ride from work to home, the last leg today, as I had not noticed anything wrong before leaving work (though I was a bit preoccupied, coulda been gone already)

Shocked and bummed, I settled for riding my Superglide the rest of the day (Shucks, right?)Did my running I needed to do, which bropught me right next to my local dealer (yet another coincidence) I asked Jan for the part number for the bolts, which of course were not carried by my dealer. Had to order the bolts.

My Blast is now down untill these two bolts come in. Anyone wanna guess what the total cost of the bolts are? I'll give you a hint: each one was NINTEY NINE FRIGGEN CENTS.

I prepaid for my order, since I figured a 3 month layaway for the parts would be financially taxing.

Now I just have to wait for them to come in again, then the "Pissed Off Chihuahua" will ride again!

I dont get it. They couldnt just sell you 2 Sportster primary bolts. Or 2 Big Twin bolts? Its not a special bolt. Am I missing something or does your dealer suck?

Blastard: If you're using the stock tail bodywork, how about lining that up? You'd probably have to shim a stock one to get it lined up anyway. Shove a seat on it and that would help too.

the Buell part number evidently didn't cross reference to a part in stock, I can ask later today perhaps, I'll have to go back in that areas on other business.

If you still can, pull another bolt out and match one up. Most of the cover bolts are the same size and some holes could use an extra long bolt (wont bottom out) if the exact size isnt available.

Menards even carries Chrome hardware now. That's what I used to reattach all my belt and sprocket guards.

I know... I know.... Chrome is for the cruiser crowd.... but it is better than sticking Stainless steel in there (I've found that aluminum and stainless don't co-habitate well) and won't turn all fuzzy and white over time. I must say it does look good against the egg shell black.

Quick question on fuel mileage...

I am looking at commuting options and the Blast is near the top on my list. I haven't ridden in a few years but now due to a work move would like to get a two wheel option for my commute to A: Save gas B: use the HOV lane and C: make it more fun that sitting in my 5 speed Toyota milking the clutch in 2nd going 5 - 10 MPH!!!

I was originally thinking scooter since the top speed I usually hit is around 60 and I could expect to get 80MPG on a 150cc scoot. I looked at some small displacement (250 and below) motorcycles but they seem to rev happy. The Ninja 250 is revered as a great commuter but your RPMs are always in the stratosphere. Then I stumbled across the Blast and low and behold a 500 with real world ability that gets great(claimed) mileage.

This is where my question comes in.
I see lots of different claims about average mileage from mid 40's to 70MPG across varying years. I know the way someone rides will make a huge difference. The bike seems basically the same from 2001 to current. Is there any change affecting MPG since 2001? I can pickup a 01 or 02 for the mid $2000 range but it isn't that much for new in the first place.

2003 and up are bullet proof, earlier years had minor teething problems.

2000-2008 are virtually identical (and 99.9% of the parts are interchangeable). Later years having more of the 'bugs' worked out. $2500 would be high for an 01, close for an 02 in very good condition and I wouldnt pay more that $3500 for a near new Blast.
MPG is 50+ around town unless your bike is running poorly. 60+ around town if your easy on the gas.70mpg freeway-65mpg almost guaranteed.
Difficult to get below 50mpg unless your really aggressive (or your bike is in poor tune).

They can be had for less than $1500.

Kelly Blue book lists for a used 2007 is $3800. KBB lists 2001 & 2002 as $2500. They do seem to have gone up in value. I'm also sure that this being the middle of riding season, bikes are at top dollar prices.
I know what I've paid, what others have paid, what would you (EZ) be willing to pay (or think is fair) for a 2001-2002?

So my speedometer stopped working, need a sensor (ordered), the Blast has no tach. It is like riding a ??hummm?? machine, no clue how fast or how hard you are going, everything is just gut and feel. So I was wondering how to get a tach on the Blast.

It seems most coveted piece of metal is the billet dashboard, which many have quite well pointed out is on ebay! But there is not one there now. Anyone have any idea how long it usually takes to show up? And how much it usually goes for?

The Blast tops out in 5th gear at 96 MPH.

So you really don't need a speedo now do you?

I am stuck in a hospital in South Bend, IN. for probably the next week. My wife had a stroke while we were camping with relatives. She has lost no functions but her brain is swelling and I have to wake her up every hour to make sure she is still OK. So as long as I'm up I'm surfing on the hi-speed hospital computer.

Thanks Guys for your concern.
Nice place to camp...LOL we got there on Wednesday, set up camp, it was smokin' hot, went swimming down at the frog pond, and were hanging around at the camp fire Wednesday night when a 4 hour thunder storm came in. The wife was climbing into the camper when lightneing struck a light pole within 100 feet and she recieved a jolt that she felt throughout the next day. Her neice was touching her as everybody was moving for the door and the niece screamed "AUNT TERRY SHOCKED ME!"

The rain and lightening lasted for 4 hours and we got 3" of rain, that was sorely needed in the area. There was a brittish guy moto camping and he said it reminded him of when he was in Bosnia being bombed.

I'm up all night checking the wife to make sure she still wakes up and I have a few minutes till I have to go back. I'm really freaking the nurses out around here, because I am watching to see if they check her vitals which have been fluctuating dramaticly and helping with checking her responses. Only 4 more hours to go and her sister should be showing up to do the same. Terry has been giving me some really interesting stories when I wake her, dinner invitations from friends, being at the county fair and other things. Earlier today I looked like a real a-hole, her oldest brother and sister showed up and she was drifting in and out and telling stories to them about things that just haven't happened. The group just smiled it off but all day I have been correcting her, getting the story right or place right, pressing her to the point of her getting angry at me, at which point she snaps into full conciousness and angrily snaps out the correct answer.

My dad had a stroke around 34 years ago. Treatments are MUCH better now - even going to some less mainstream things like hyperbaric chambers, etc.

My thoughts are with you. Please keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about the incident but you're doing the right thing. Keep on top of the medical folks. They mean well, but they forget and often look at people as just another patient. When my step-daughter had e.coli several years ago my wife had to ride herd on the docs and nurses to make sure everything got done.

They moved Terry to 3 floor ICU to monitor her more closely. I had stepped out this morning to SSS, and when I got back to the 4th floor Stroke Unit they had moved her and I freaked out. Then when I got to 3rd floor ICU, I misunderdstood the nurses instructions and really wigged out(remember, I had not slept for 24 hours , but I just had to let the 3rd floor know what kind of a Jackass they were dealing with) I had the ICU administrator called and got things all straightened out and now though her condition has gotten better, the care has been ramped up abit from what it was. There was a period of about two hours this afternoon that she woke up completly, talked with the relatives, ate some yogurt, and was examined by the head neurologist. So that is a very good sign. The swelling has to go down, and the excess pressure needs to drain(her concious two hours is a great indicator of that happening).
They are conducting a CAT Scan and MRI every morning and comparing the results with previous scans. This morning they were not sure if it had enlarged or not so that is a good thing also. I retrospect, I arrived at the ICU at the absolute worst possible time because they just moved her down there and the 4th floor still had her charts. The ICU nurse really didn't have a clue what was going on, and I have been apologyzing like the bad little boy that I am.
Thank you all for your concern. I am hoping that they might release her Saturday.
I am very thankful that they have the internet in Indiana now.
