I thought you were coming this way.
If you're going through Canada to come down here, I think we need to talk.

Swampy:

I am going to American on Saturday because it actually fits into my schedule. What is in Canada in June? I think I need to check the storm fronts more often.

Well, I made it to Canada, some place thats 5 minutes from Niagra Falls, St Katherins. Beer is very expensive $20 buck a 12! Gas is 98 cents a liter! 3.75 liters per gallon, you do the math. Speed limit is 100 kph, don't come here unles you want to stay. The only good thing is if you need something from the dollar store with the exchange rate its only like 79 cents.

Other great thing about Canada: Tylenol with Codine. Our OTC meds in the states are sugar pills by comparison.

This sucks! The weather has been so nice, but my seat won't be back from Sargent's until Tuesday! I'm tempted to get some duct tape and a couple of pillows! On the bright side, it leaves the motorcycle where I can work on my ignition project. I'll have a rideable prototype ready to test next week! ...

Hey guys,

I believe my blast only gets about 30mpg, and I don't think that's normal. What should I do to get the 50-60 mpg?

I got an 01, 5k miles, with V&H pipes, don't know if is re-jetted or not, previews owner doesn't know either, and everything else is stock. And ride is just city commuting, 55 mph top.

Thanks.

Hi Bridgeport, firstly you said you believe your blast gets 30 mpg? Have you did the math when you fill up at a gas station to know where your mpg is yet?

After I rejetted, put on a different intake, and changed the exhaust I thought I killed my mileage too. I really only dropped it about 5.

Welcome to the board Bridgeport!

I know when I am running hard, 80-85 mph, I only get just over 90 miles before I have to fill up which ends up to be 45 mpg.

Re-check your mileage, make sure you are doing youir math correctly. Make sure you aren't leaking fuel. Check your spark plug boot, make sure it is on the spark plug tight.

I average 55 to 68 in the city depending on how I drive. If it's a long way to pay day I get about 68 because I'm driving in a nice conservative Gold Wing manner. If I've just got paid, I'm getting 50 because I'm on in all the time, goofing in corners and having a good time. Be careful how you drive it, use your odometer to see how many miles you get before reserve and try to fill it to the same level each time to get a baseline. Then drive it all out and compare tanks.

The bike has no leaks and runs fine.

Here is my math, correct me if I'm wrong: when the odometer has 60 miles, I go fill the tank to top, 2 gallons every time. 60 / 2 = 30 mpg.

I will see how many miles it will get before reserve. But, does it matter in calculating mpg?

What else can I try before I send it to shop?
Thanks.

Welcome Bridgeport!
The reserve wont make a difference in mpg.
Its hard to believe at 30mpg your Blast runs fine. A free flowing exhaust (like the V&H) should get you better gas mileage than stock.
Check the carb jetting. It may be jetted wrong when they installed the V&H. Stock is 42/170, 45/175 is most common for a re jet.Idle mixture screw about 2 1/2 turns out.
Check the primary chain tension (by adjusting it per the manual with 7 flats out instead of 4).
Check the ignition timing.
Check the plug gap .038-.043.
Change the spark plug to a new NGK or Spitfire. A stock plug is fine, but you might as well get a better plug if you're going to change it.
Air filter dirty?
These are simple places to start and would be the most likely culprits for poor mileage if your bike still seems to be running well. The Blast is a very forgiving creature in stock form so 30mpg is pitiful at best.

Got a quick question on which torx bits(#'s)do I need to work on an 03 Blast. I'm pretty sure T27 does the plastic cover over the back tire and belt guard but haven't tried it yet. So if anyone knows which ones are needed it would save me some time and some money. That way I can just get a set with the #'s I need. TiA

One more question too... the owner before me was running 93oct this is overkill to my knowledge but I don't have a manual. Should I switch down to 87oct or 89oct?

Thanks for all the info.

I think I'll just send it to have a tune-up,
I don't know how to check those things.

Have you noticed a difference in the natural knock of the blast with supreme? Thanks for the torx sizes thats a big help. Do you know what T50 is used for by any chance?

My bikes are pretty loud, however, I only noticed a knock on the red bike if I don't use supreme or use cheap gas.

Bridgeport: I hope you have found a good dealer/mechanic. Its infinitely simpler than the V-twins but somehow they always screw them up.
The Blast is one vehicle to be sure they know what they are doing. If you talk to them and have doubts about there abilities, find another dealer/mechanic.
And make sure they dont charge you the V-twin price (much of the pricing will be the same, but it has 1 less spark plug and half as much oil as the twins, for example). Also make sure they know what your problem is. Just saying "give it a tune-up" may not solve your problem and you'll then have to pay them more to find the actual problem.

Sorry, I dont want to sound like the voice of doom but we've heard too many stories of Blasts being screwed up by professional mechanics. Feel free to give them the Badweb address.
Again, it is a really simple motorcycle!

I currently run 89 and have run 87, 91 and 93, my bike ran the worst on 93 and the rest seem to all be about the same, with it getting better mileage at 89, so I have settled there.

Go read about gas, it actually produces more power with lower octane, but gas companies will love you for wasting so much money : )

Yeah, EZ is right... 91 is the best for the bike. It will also give you the best mileage too. (for me it does)
