well i got the engine almost together. im surprised that one of the harley dealerships had all my parts i needs and the buell dealership did not have any, guess i just got lucky. All i have to do is install the cam in the head. i just need to know how to align the cams can't seem to find any info on that and the manual is worthless when it comes to the cams

What's hard on the belt is trying to push start the beast because ice has formed on the clutch switch. At least, that's what broke my belt when it had 15,070 miles on it.

ice on the clutch switch was my bain all winter. I really need to bypass it or at least flip the diode

This is the only thing it says in the manual and it that not to specific.
See Figure 3-97. Rotate engine so that both lifters, from the cylinder will be installed on the base circle of the cam.

How do you guys think the Blast compares to the Suzuki S40? Both are single cylinder bikes with similar dimensions and price, although the Sooz has a bigger engine and is more of a cruiser, while the Blast is a sport/standard bike.

I found what I was looking for, so here goes:

On the cams, with the slot in the intake cam pointing up, there should be three arrows, pointing to the exhaust cam, pinion gear, and one pointing rearward. The line markings on the exhaust cam and the pinion gear should line up with the arrows.

I think Gearheaderico was the one that gave me that on 10/6/05.

Ez, in terms of being able to learn on it, is there much of a difference? Would I learn just as well on either one? If so, it just comes down to personal taste as to whether or not I want a sporty bike or not, and I can figure that one out for myself.

Hopefully any bike you get you will like.

I have found the Blast to be an extremely fun bike to ride, even on long trips. Tonight I left the Sportster in the garage and rode the Little Kids Blast. While the Big Kid and I were cutting it up in the corners out here in the flatlands, the Big Kids Blast turns 20,000 miles. My 91 Sportster that I got in 2002 had 20,000 miles on it, as a cruiser it just wasn't ridden, weather the previous owner(s) didn't like it, had other bikes, or what ever the reason was, it simply was not ridden. I put 20,000 on it since I owned it, and we only have a riding season of May-September.

The Suzi is a cool looking bike, and will probably run like a clock for a long time.

The Blast on the other hand is a great handling bike, and if the mood strikes you it is easy to modify to your likings.

Here's my two cents. I'm pretty much in Swampy's camp as far as advice goes. You will outgrow either bike but you will never stop having fun with the blast. When you are done with the S40 you will have a small cruiser that isn't remarkable in any respect and you will probably WANT to sell it. When you feel the need to step up from the Blast you will have a bike that stops on a dime, slices through curves like a knife, is light and nimble through city traffic, is an outstanding commuter bike that gets incredible mileage, and aside from a couple of easy fix quirks, is extremely reliable and overbuilt, a bike that you will be reluctant to part with.

If you have looked around here enough and have a feel for those who frequent the dank recesses of the thumper forum you will see that many of the members here have other bigger faster bikes tucked in the garage alongside their blasts. For some reason (obviously the FUN factor) they choose to keep a blast (OR TWO) for the sheer enjoyment they provide.

I have a Blast, a 2000 HD RoadKing and a 1990 HD FXRS. The Blast gets ridden twice as much as the other two combined.

By all means if you want to enjoy learning about cruiser style riding, enjoy the cruiser - as long as your riding, however the Blast is a great example of Buell's uniqueness and it is considered an ideal learning tool. Besides they are fun!

Well she is up in running and goes thew all the gears but i soon as i start taking off it jumps out of first then jumps back in. it only does it in that gear. do i need to readjust the shifter

When you look in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL you will not find what the Transmission oil level should with a
picture ...

It only says it hold 32oz.(one quart) ...
Well that is not quite correct ...

Here's how to check:

With BLAST streight up as you would set on it(also the way you should check the engine oil) COVER,clutch removed ...
Pull the clutch lever and use a bright flash lite to see with ...

The transmission oil level should be to the bottom of the SPRING,diaphragm ...
THIS WILL BE A LITTLE MORE THAN A "QUART" (and this also applies to the XB's) when filled to the correct level ...

Just for information the Sportster(tube frame)engine BUELLs only require 28 oz.,
and their FACTORY SERVICE MANUALS are wrong as they say 32 oz(one quart) which will put the transmission oil level pass the bottom of the SPRING,diaphragm ...
Which cause what Ezblast says, ie: Fluid too high !!!

Actually fluid level should be at the bottom of the gear teeth as you look straight into the primary cover - just touching them.

"i" know IMHO it needs to have
a little oil to get it up to the

maybe oil from the chain does that job, because I had those symptoms when I got higher than the teeth. LOL -

i did put a quart in it but its jumping out of 1st could it be my shifter needing to be adjusted.

Once again, working on a Blast is NOT rocket science. Constant implications that to work on the Blast you must KNOW "details" (which are seemingly not available to everyone) and must "THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX" you mostly lead the "UNKNOWING" to ditch the Blast and go out and buy a Honda.
And constantly telling people the manual is wrong on most counts leads them with no hope of ever working on it (especially when the dealers arent much help).
Is it possible that since your Blast uses an XB primary cover that your fluid capacity is different? Have you ever checked the relative volume of the two?

For everybody else: Buy a manual and follow it. If unsure about a procedure, ask questions first before starting. If something seems wrong, again ask a question before continuing.
The Blast is a very simple motorcycle and very uncomplicated to work on (not rocket science).

If you are talking about trading up to a
"CBR600RR", for my self that sounds good ...

"BUT" at 6'3" and 260 pounds it would still look the same as me on my BLAST !!!

Thought this "WAS/IS" what this web site is all about as in HELPING BLASTers take proper and better care of their BLAST ...

They will never know if the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is not correct or have enough information in it ...

The second PAGE in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is "READERS COMMENTS" ... If you
tell the FACTORY there is an ERROR, it
stays with you and them as they do not send everyone that has a MANUAL any correction up-dates ...

All manuals are put together by technician level people(not MECHANICs) ... So it is like a box of chocolates, you never know what "INFO" you are going to get ,,,
