I am currently looking at getting a 01 blast (first bike). I have been told that the only real problem w/ it is that it smokes after it warms up. I have asked other riders what might cause this prob. and the census is rings. Can anybody out there think of anything else that might cause this? For the princely sum of $1,000.00 this bike should be a fairly good deal. Comments???

Thanks "Mari"

Sounds like a ok deal. I would guess valve guides or seals, rebuild the Head and have a new set of rings installed. I'd probably talk them down to $800 though.

Leaking valve guide - either way - disassembly - checking, and/or rebuilding is involved - any other bike would be difficult, however, the single is a simpler beast and only the top end is involved - so the degree of difficulty is less - not easy, but definately doable! - either way the end result in parts plus labor would probably bring ya close to 2 grand total, the price of a used Blast without that problem - however, by having it done - you know that area of the motor would be solid and one less headache. I'd actually buy the 1 grand bike and fix it and enjoy the peace of mind that would bring, besides - Ideal time to add a high compression piston and if frisky - the B50 cam, add a K&N filter, and an Iridium Racing plug, and if you want an aftermarket exhaust - this also would be the time to act! Check that jetting is 44/170 stock and 45/175 modified.
Welcome!

It will be a ton under $2000 if you do the work yourself. A top end gasket kit is like $60, and Rings are $12. Hone to put a hatch back on the cyl $20. Sending a cyclinder head off for new guides (the seals come with the top end gasket kit)and a good once over should be $100-$200. Total cost ~$300 + Bike.

If you don't end up buying it, let me know. I Know a few people that would be intrested in a $1000 Blast.

Also check the simple things, oil overfill, crank case vent hose plugged, or still routed into the carb!

I do plan on buying this bike, I also plan on doing as much of the work myself( w/ a little help from friends- after they stop laughing at me for buying half a harley).

I was figuring that after rings, gaskets, tags, ins.,etc... that I would be into this bike for about $2,000.

Thanks all, This site is wonderful!!! lots of help, advise, and friendly peoples here.

PS If the bikes starts and runs well enough, some heavier oil (40w to 60w) might cut down enough smoking for you to make it to the SLO Ride before teardown. Or ride it while it smokes!

Thanks, I plan on riding it while it smokes for now.

I did change the oil and filter yesterday, and drained and refilled the primary. One thing got my attention on the primary was that the oil smelled a bit like fuel. I know that that is not supposed to be. What I don't know is how bad for this bike is that little problem??? And I fugure that this problem is caused by bad rings, am I on the right track???

Thanks "MJ"

I wrote the following paragraph before I saw you wrote primary. I cant think off any plausible reasons for that happening.

If the oil smelled like gas:
Someone probably flooded the engine. Some possible causes would be: fuel left on (possible but unlikely cause), enrichener (choke) stuck closed, spent too much time starting the bike and flooded it.
If the oil was diluted by gas that would also cause it to smoke when warm. (as well as overfilling with oil).

MJ, I just realized you have a California bike:
WARNING!: disconnect the charcol canister if that hasnt already been done.Really simple-takes 5 minutes.

One implausible reason for the primary smelling like gas is that someone connected the transmision vent line to the charcaol canister.

Ok I went through the archives, researching that smog can. Every thing that I could find says that it should be under the left side of the seat. I can't find it on my bike. and yes it IS a cali bike. Help

It's gone then I did find a breather filter mounted under the tail, haven't been able to follow that all the way to where ever it goes yet.
Thank God that Buell decided to put them in easy to remove spots.

And if the filter hasn't been cleaned then the dirty filter will blow out "smoke" - dirt particles from the filter - making it look like it was smoking - lol

Just to update y'all; I pulled the tank off over the weekend( yanked all of the stickers/ decals, and polished up the plastic. BTW meguiers mag and aluminum polish works pretty good on plastic.) While I was there I pulled the PCV and turned the motor over Can we say "BLOW BY" I have to say that my rings are gone. I also static timed the bike, runs better now, I can get on it a bit harder now; w/o it pinging at half throttle.

I should be getting it registered today, Then the runs down the road I live on will be that much closer to legal. ( Thank God I live in the country, local S.O. doesn't really run out my road unless called for the most part.)

Depending on how much cash I have I might see about getting my Permit too. Then S.O. can leave me alone untill they catch me riding at night. but they gotta catch me first, (right????)

Ok bike is registered, but no permit( didn't feel like sticking aroung the dmv for another hour or two; the first was bad enough) rode it to work last nite. BTW I can't tell if the bike is smoking at 60+ or not( mirrors don't work that good). Now I get to put more miles on it just so I pick up my Xyl( eX-YoungLady) in the p/u, later this afternoon. Oh well I got plenty of time.

I just got my permit!!! I only missed 2 questions

Last Fri. I learned that hail hurts at 70. ( no full face helmet, half bucket thas all.) Yesterday I learned that when it is 32 degrees out I want gloves. That's almost, ALMOST too cold to ride in w/ out them.

And my bike seems to have slowed down on the smoke production.

Shouldn't be too cold to smoke after 20 mi. at 60+. and yes It does have oil in it.

Maybe, either that or smoke b gone really works either way I'm happy.

I don't want to be a killjoy, however, it takes aprox. 30 minutes for the oil to reach full operational temp. At least in SF, Ca.

Hey EZ, isn't it fairly cool up there in S.F.? Lots of fog and stuff??? ( Don't worry about being a killjoy, atleast when dealing w/ me; personally I'm a smart a$$)

It's fairly warm here just 35 mi north of Santa Barbara. At least in the afternoon( mornings can get right frosty at times.)

Possibly even longer than 30 minutes even at mild temperatures.

Low smoke emissions just might mean heavier weight oil will do the trick for awhile.

My old FL will go through 20w-50 as fast as gasoline, but only after at least 30 minutes of riding (uses very little on short rides). Heavier weight oil fixed that problem.

Ever seen "oil honey"??? that is about the consistancy of smoke b gone.
Yes, I am looking at getting new rings and gaskets, I just wish that I didn't have to go to Ventura just to order them. Something tells me that they will not ship parts to me, but I'll have to see. Just have to pick a nice day to ride down there and order the parts.

There are places to mail order parts and get a discount. I guess Santa Maria HD no longer sells Buells?

Also, you may not get away with just rings and gaskets. Sooo, you might want to consider a new piston and up the compression ratio to 10.5 to 1. It'll still run on premium and you can get all the parts from NRHS. If they do the hone & bore and you eliminate the PCV to the carb, your oil consumption will drop down to zero. You might also consider the 515 big bore kit which will bolt right on!

No, Santa Maria no longer deals w/ Buell which I think SUCKS. On the Big bore kit, Well I think I'm gonna have to see how much everything is ( piston, rings, gaskets, etc...) I might just do that. Unfortunatly I don't think that I'm gonna have much time for a while ( just went full time w/ the towing co. I work at; No more part time yea!!!! Which probably means that my weekends are changing too; Possible no SLO ride for me this year(SUCKS). Right now I just want time to actually ride the dang thing( and not just to or from work). I need the experiance, and I want to get comfortable w/ the bike before I go take DMV test. Well I gotta go for now ( back to work, dang lunch breaks are never long enough). God, I hope it don't rain tomorrow morning, I want to RIDE in to work.

Thanks for all the ideas,

"MJ"
