I'd like to know who has had to replace their rear wheel bearings, and at what milage. If you have over 10,000 miles on your bike and have not had any problems chime in too. I'm trying to compile some data about Blast bearing longevity.

I personally have had to raplace the whole rear wheel (under warranty) when the rear wheel bearing spun in the wheel, but I don't know if it was a wheel or a bearing issue.

Tony, good to hear from you. Man, I thought that you had more miles than that on the Tortuga before you had to go overseas. How's everything?

Somewhere around 10K a seal came off, exposing the bearing to atmospherical hazards, such as moisture, dust, etc. I replaced both bearings because the book said so. HD/Buell of Baltimore sold me 2 genuine HD Made In China bearings.

well, last weekend i noticed some black grease/brake dust around my bearing, so i cleaned it real well, and rode it 20 miles to my buddies, when i got to his house there was a thin ring of black grease around the bearing, that had seeped out, so i had him lift it to do the bearing wobble test. Low and behold, no wobble at all, nothing, no movement left to right. So, this leaves me wondering. At 1700 miles is my rear bearing going out, or just getting broke, in, lol....Chris

My '02 did the same thing at approx. the same mileage. Had dealer check while it was in for other work. Said it was OK. I have been checking since. Has 7.3k now with no problems.

I blew the grease out of my front while washing, and subsequently had to replace them. My rear have 45K miles on them, though I have repacked them twice. If your wheel bearings are chewing up your rear wheel, make SURE your belt is not too tight.

hootowl, I guess you shouldn't powerspray certain areas of your bike. And how would you repack a sealed wheel bearing, and how can you have any choice in a blasts' belt tension ?

Yes, I've learned my lesson <IMG SRC=">

If you take the dust caps off, they can be cleaned and repacked.

I didn't notice that he was talking about a Blast, (I know this is the Blast section, I'm just not real bright sometimes) but for tube frame owners, the belt tension is often the cause of spun bearings, especially with PM wheels.

I have the friend who repacks sealed bearings regularly on his snowmobile track suspension, replaces them quite often also along with the track that is damaged by the idler wheels they are carrying, I always wondered why..LOL. Don't try it, they cost less than the hassle if they crap out.

Story on the real wheel bearings, My blast has been having some wheel hop at higher speeds over the last few months. I just figured it was the rear shock dying. Well I was due to have a new rear tire put so I ordered my pirelli from the local dealer and let them install the tire. They called me a few hours later and told be my real wheel bearings were shot. I thought great now I am going to be charged an arm and a leg to get this work done. Turns out I was only charged 40 bucks and that included the parts to get the bearings changed out. Now I have no rear wheel hop at all, and it rides real smooth. Just passing this information along as it might be helpful to others who have noticed the real wheel hop at higher speeds.

I found my wheel bearing loose in the wheel on the pulley side. It did not look like it was spinning but I imagine if the bearing started to crap out it probably would then start spinning in the wheel.

At 10,050 miles pulley side rear wheel bearing crapped out about 25 miles from home. Rode on in at 40mph or less with frequent stops to check wheel. Installed KOYO bearings.

Ltwin,

That sucks... Sounds like you have a bigger problem. I've heard of a few bearing problems, but this is the worst by far. Make sure that the bearings are not being overtorqued, and that you have an spacer in-between the bearings. I've heard of a least one case where there was not a spacer in between the bearings and another one where the spacer was too small. Unfortunately, I don't know what the length of the spacer should be.

J,

The wheel, axle, and spacer have all been replaced in an attempt to remedy this problem. I had the spacer inspected by a MC mechanic (non-HD) who said it could be short by about 0.002" but if it was 0.001" long it could cause this problem. Upon inspection he found it to be dead on. He really does not like the SKF bearings that were on the bike. Likens them to wrapping the axle with duct tape until they fit snug in the wheel. Upon inspection of the last blown wheel bearing, he found that the inner race had cracked, a chip had broken off inside, and the result was the blown seal, sending bearings everywhere.

When I saw the title, I was really hoping this was going to be a thread on how to get the darn things out of there. My pully-side bearing evidently lost it's seal without my noticing. I don't know how long it's been gone, but the bearing grenaded on me on the way home last night. (she's at about 9000 miles) The dealer says if I bring him the wheel, it'll be about $75 labor to replace them. I don't have $75 bucks on me, and I need the Blast to get to work tomorrow. Any ideas?

Have Fun,
Tom

Slide hammer, if all else fails tap it out from the other side with a long rod. I don't believe they are in the hub all that tight. Makes sure not to damage the center spacer and if you find any shims in there that they go back inplace.

Check Into Cash? - a short term loan group - the term being your next pay day and high interest rates - still usefull in a real pinch - I haven't a clue about what other grade bearings would be suitable - though others have said they used others - no one has ever mentioned a brand and stock number - something I would save and post on a topic header somewhere - lol - Now would be a good time for the more creative to speak up!

The dealer only wanted $7 each for the bearings. But when I pulled the axle out, the inner bearing and the 6 remaining balls dropped out. So I'm looking at an outer bearing, pressed really tightly in a blind hole., so I can't tap it out from behind. Anyway, I've been getting lifts to work, and I got paid today, so I'll take it into the dealer tomorrow.

Have Fun,
Tom
