here's a better look. me 'n the UBC decided we weren't near bird-brained enough to ascertain what manner of winged creature might have constructed such an un-humble abode, but YOUR name came up in the conversation... : )

the light's still too hot, but it was time to go and i gave it a shot. this particular chunk of road is pretty sweet, and not regularly patrolled.

one last shot of the cruel, arctic sun blazing down over the lake, merciless, relentless, cold, unrelenting. trust me, you don't want to live here, bucko. best you leave this unforgiving environment to strained professionals like me and Unibear, and simply gaze with awe and wonder from afar. darn lucky, really, that we even made it out with our licenses intact.

the UberBear strikes a handsome pose, mere moments before setting out for the Lower Kern River Canyon and home. regular readers may remember that the LAST time he tried this maneuver the amplified, barely-modulated voice of the California Highway Patrol cascaded down all around him, something about the speed limit NOT being 85...

ride safe, our Hooligan friend, pop smoke when it's safe, and thanks for the lovely diversion.

Happy Hooligandays,

Hey FB - Glad to see that you got out and took all the pix that I didn't! Hi to Unibear, also. Looks like a lovely day in the neighborhood!

Would that be an eagle nest?

Hi Dino
It was a grand day at the Dome. Warm & clear. But when I got back down in the valley it was in the low 40s with swirling graveyard fog fit for the Ghost of Christmas Future.
That nest was huge & those were not mere twigs it was made of. Thats a LOT of bird droppings there.
After the first pass up the hill Jerry's shaking his head laughing and waves me over and shows me his camera. Empty road & rocks. He says " Dude by the time this thing decides to take the picture your GONE". No problem, this is a great bit of road so a second run just a bit slower would be fun. On the way over we had passed a Firetruck rolling code in the opposite direction. On this second run at about where you see me at the distant corner is where I came around to find said Firetruck coming back & about a foot or so in my lane. I was tight in the corner & a long ways from hitting him but it still gave me a momentary pucker. Jerry got a great picture of my rear wheel this round. "Slower Dude". Third time's the charm, rolling by at about 40 or 45.The whole time I'm thinking "If I think fast maybe I'll look fast". Alas I know better as I don't look fast no matter how fast I'm going. We both had quite a bit of fun and laughs doing this.
As big as I look on the S3 I must look huge on the XB.
The guy with the ape hangers did wave to me as I went by so maybe it was just the camera?
Merry Christmas everyone!

actually, the door-bell rings this afternoon and it's none other than UnibearClaus, up from Bakersfield, out on his ThunderBolt, and looking for a little good-natured Christmas Eve rhythm and Buells.

So the way I read that statement is: If you want to go for a ride with Ferris, just show up at the ThunderDome. Hmmm. Whirr, clank, clank and other gear-meshing sounds as my brain works to formulate a plan.

Danny: ha ha! the Ubear got lucky on this one, as being Christmas eve and all we had knocked off work early for the day. the second issue these days is that the 'Strom is in a DMV-induced holding pattern right now (seems that the TWO Cali DMV officials i spoke with when i bought the thing in Colorado GRAVELY misinformed me as to the legalities of bringing a 49-state bike into CA, and while i battle it out with the DMV the 'Strom sits in the garage with an expired temporary, all of which is to say that any riding i do for the time being is on a borrowed ((thanks Denise!)) scooter.)

actually, what we all need to do ("all" being Unibear, Dino, you, me, Denise, and anyone else who wants to play) is plan a gig for one of these coming weekends and just frikkin' DO it! : )

Jerry,
Keep us informed on your progress with the DMV...back when I bought my S1W, I'd found a perfect specimen with 90 miles on it in Minnesota, and wanted to buy it in a big way, but the research I'd done at that time indicated that NO california resident could bring a NEW* 49 state vehicle into the ROK, with 2 exceptions:
1) A 49 state vehicle inherited from a relative in another state
2) A CA resident that totals his CA vehicle while out of state can purchase a 49 state vehicle, but evidence of the previous vehicle's demise was required.

*New was defined as <7500 miles, used >7500 miles. Note that the laws governing this are mostly NOT DMV laws, they are Dept of Health laws, which controls the air quality in the ROK.

What are you hearing from the DMV cats now that is making it difficult? It sure seems that your vehicle passed the tests that I read of back then.

BTW, my story worked out for the best. After posting my predicament to Badweb in April 2000, someone here pointed me to the S1W that I own that was purchased in Rancho Cucamunga with 95 miles on it. So I never had to exercise this.

I know a california resident that has an S1W that is the twin of mine who brought it in with a hair over 7500 miles. He did this 2.5 years ago. So unless the law changed, you ought to be able to get it in. I can talk to him to find out what issues he faced if you need me to.

Merry Christmas!
Al

If I'm getting it right it's that the Cali resident cannot be the one to put the 7500 miles on the bike to make it "used". That's what the first people he contacted at DMV screwed up and said he COULD do before he bought the bike. As I get it a Cali resident cannot be the first registered owner to any new 49 state vehicle and bring it back.

Al - Unibear is correct. While FB was in Colorado he was told by DMV employees that he could buy the bike, put 7,500 on it and bring it in to CA. Having done that, he is now told (as per your understanding) that it had to have 7,500 miles on it at time of purchase. Also as you point out, the battle has now shifted from DMV to CARB (CA Air Resources Board). FB is currently trying to wrangle a green card for the Strom from CARB. I mentioned to him the other day that my wife's sister-in-law has been in the country for three years and is still waiting for her green card.

What are you hearing from the DMV cats now that is making it difficult? It sure seems that your vehicle passed the tests that I read of back then.

Al, despite was i was told by the California DMV when i bought my bike, there is no provision in the state statutes (which are created by CARB, and enforced by DMV) allowing me to do what i did. as you pointed out there are several scenarios in which a Cali resident CAN legally bring a less-than-7500 bike back (which would also include documentable theft of your original machine and obtaining a less-than bike thru a divorce settlement or inheritance), but i was told by two different DMV reps that as long as i put on at least 7500 BEFORE i entered Cali - and providing i could prove those miles were put on elsewhere, via gas receipts and motel receipts (not to mention my digital proof) - that i'd be home free, so to speak.

they, sadly, were badly mistaken. i FINALLY received the formal letter from the DMV stating their case, said letter starting the formal deportation process – up to now i’ve been able to research my position, but unable to formally do anything about it. should i not prevail, i'll be issued a one-way permit to the border, and the bike will never – as in NOT EVER - be allowed to be registered here in California.

i had a phone conversation with the manager of CARB last week, and asked what's the difference between buying a 49-state bike with 7500 on the clock and bringing it in versus what i did, to which he replied, in essence, that there was no difference whatsoever, save for the fact that what i did is not specifically permitted by state statute. in other words, illegal.

sure made for a dramatic ending to “Out of Words”, tho, right??? : )
