o, wait,sorry . . .that was another blonde

Erik . . . . .there has only been one bike that out-grinned my M2 . . . . something tells me the 66 Honda 305 Street Scrambler (with Snuff'r'nots!) would no longer make me smile as mush as it did, though . . . . .keep on doing, sir

I think I'll be able to resist the chrome heels gaurds! The black ones might not be so bad on a black XB9S!

ERIK:
How about a return of real bikes for real size riders. The new bikes are great but if your under 5'8", many are not. I have a 2001 M2, probably your most reliable and comfortable. Make one with a fairing like the S-3 with detachable hard bags... you got a winner!

I posted this message on the X-Board under “leaking oil” but placed it here also in hopes someone from the factory will read it...
As far as the "new arrivals" checks my guys, Jim, J.J. and Reese at HDCC/Buell in Waterloo can tell you all about the oil leaking problem faced by new XB12 owners!!!
Don't get me wrong, guys, I've built enough hot rods to know how nerve racking it is to put engines and transmissions together, then fire them for the first time and watch with worry hoping you remembered to tighten every fastener and clamp but Buell has to do better!!
My XB12R started bleeding after 26 miles and my service guys have been slowing pulling their hair out until just the other day over what caused it. Some ham fisted Harley employee in Milwaukee who put my engine together over tightened one of the starter bolts, stripping the threads which caused and almost undetectable leak that drained around the case and almost looked like there was a sealing problem between the cases. This leak detection was complicated by the fact it only leaked when the engine got hot .
In three trips to service the guys Teflon taped the drain plug which leaked, retorque all the covers, some of which were lose and rerouted the trans vent until they found the real culprit, the starter.
I really appreciate their patience and hard work in on this at at no time did I feel put off, in fact Doug even jumped in. Craig helped me get a loaner XB9 while the bike was down so the guys at HDCC/Buell really know what customer service is!!
But the fact of the matter is, ERIK, take control of your engine construction!!!! After visiting the factory on the 20th. I was very impressed with the level of enthusiasm from all the employees and I've got to believe if you did your engines in house the number of problems would be substantially be reduced!! The guy who built my engine in Milwaukee who probably can't even pronounce Buell could cares less about these engines because it not a REAL Harley.
This is to say nothing about the other guy who misaligned the cam sensor on my XB so after 24 hours it wouldn't idle below 2000 rpm and started dying at every stop sign. The guys in service had to replace every part associated with this component because it was so screwed up! Again, nothing Buell factory guys did!! Again, ERIK, take control of your powerplants!!
Sorry guys, I've been holding this in since I bought the bike the last Saturday of August!! I don't mean to rant because I've built some things as I mentioned and I understand it and I've also got a GREAT dealership behind me but there are a lot of potential customers out there that would not deal well with this kind of thing. Buell has to do better than it's competitors.
By the way, Dave worked his butt off to get me one of the first red XB12R in the state but why did a dealership in Alaska have an XB12R before arguably one of the top selling Buell dealers have to wait over a month for their first one??? Again, ERIK, take a look at this!! What's the incentive to sell these bikes if you can't or won't supply your top dealers?? This is unheard of in the import bike business. Buell has to do better!!
In closing, I had the opportunity to visit with Erik at length last summer and his enthusiasm is infectious. The bike’s performance is outstanding, having had an M2 as comparison, but these things will continue to haunt this company unless the boss really looks into them.
I’ve loved the two Buells I’ve owned and I’ll continue to support this brand which is why I’m ranting, I just want to see Buells get better and receive the credit for innovation and design they really deserve!!!

Ok, here's one for Erik and the gang...

When I took delivery of my new XB9R, I hardly noticed this, but it's turning into it's own little saga.

blublaks05

If you look at the swing arm, you can see the fuel overflow drain hose poking out from behind the heel guard. I never really thought about it since I was having too much fun riding the thing. However over time this has caused two problems.

One - by pissing gas onto the swing arm there is now a slight discoloration to the finish.

Two - the hose actually rubbed against the metal and the combination of the two (fuel and rubbing) has put a 'hole' in the finish, now I'm concerned about possible rust etc.

Took it to my dealer, asking about the clip that I found on models on the show room floor. They (at first) didn't know there was one there. After establishing that one new one being prepped for the floor didn't have one, however those on the floor did, it should have one as well. Not having one in stock, the tech rigged a wire tie to it and a harness point behind the frame so it points down (this as I understand it should be a temporary fix). The service writer said he would get with his manager to contact the factory about what to do. Now this is such a small thing, I'm sure it wouldn't seem like a problem, but if anyone else has that hose sticking out, you could end up with the same problem and it could turn into a real headache for both the owners and the folks at Buell.

Oh, and you'll love this.. Went to a dealer that is closer to my home than the one that's helping (and sold it too me) and was told first that they didn't work on 'Custom bikes' they didn't build. Note; as the 'Buell Tech' pointed out, the non-factory, custom built black heel guards, custom made black chrome Buell lettering, 'aftermarket' opaque black windshield and special custom exhaust, air filter and ECM. Ok so you can't see the air filter or the 'custom' high performance computer that were all sold as a set (see Buell catalog under Race Kit)when I bought it! This other dealer (through their service writer guy and their 'enthusiast' Buell Tech) then told me to take it back to the selling dealer and IF they couldn't help me, then maybe, I could get Buell to push the selling dealer to pay them to do some work on it.. WTF!?!

Question: Will the new Goodyear Flexten Steel Belt be made available for Buell Tube Frame Bikes?

Sure would be nice to have the added security of a tougher, longer lasting belt if the mold/tooling costs are not prohibitive and the material is compatible with the existing drive train components.

If you look at the swing arm, you can see the fuel overflow drain hose poking out from behind the heel guard.

Is the fuel overflow in a different spot on the R's? I took note yesterday that the overflow tube on the XB9S is directly above the fan. Gas will spill all over a fan & the shock. I thought that was a very odd place to put it.

I wasnt quite sure if it was an overflow & Dave at waterloo confirmed it was.

The small hose in your pic looks like the hose attached to batterys but I am positive the Buells use a sealed unit so it cant be one.

Blublak, I'll have to look at were mine comes out, it certainly is not any where visible.

About rust , not to worry that swing arm is aluminum.

Dyna,
It's definitely gas. I can smell it. On other models (on the showroom floor) the tube is clipped behind the frame at the heel guard. On mine, the clip is missing and that length of hose was rubbing in one small spot as the arm/oil tank rose and fell during riding. Didn't see if it crosses the fan, but now I'll have to check.

Davegess,
See above as to where it's supposed to come out. Oh, it's on the right side (at least on all that I've seen) Now I'm just waiting to hear news from the dealer as to what they (and Buell) are going to do about it all. Ok, no rust, but what about other types of corrosion, etc. that may affect that one spot where the finish was removed?

Later,}

THE TUBE IS A FUEL VENT BUT I BELIEVE IT IS ONLY VAPOR . FUEL WILL NOT COME OUT. IT IS ROUTED THRU THE OUTSIDE OF THE AIR BOX. IF THE IT WAS REMOVED THE HOSE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ROUTED PROPERLY FROM THAT POINT MAKING IT EITHER TOO SHORT OR TOO LONG

Hey Fed, No need to yell buddy.. I guess that's what happens when you are typing and riding your Lightning at the same time.... I'm not sure it's only vapor, I know that at times the swing arm was wet, and it was gas. You don't suppose the techs at the dealer goofed up somewhere do you? Maybe one of our great sources here can chime in on the situation.

Still haven't heard from the dealer, but with the hurricane rollin' in, I guess they're just buttoning up and will get back to business next week.

Later,

That hose will dump liquid fuel when the tank is filled past that inner lip. It should be routed through a small black clip on the inside of the lefthand footpeg mount. This way it dumps it all over the hot exhaust and the rear tire. I don't see the clip in the parts manual so I assume it comes with the LH footpeg mount.

To whom it may concern:
While checking on prices for a new air cleaner, to replace the Most Heinous Breadbox (Helmholz) I was informed by my H/D dealer that the Buell race cleaner was DISCONTINUED....but still available as part of the race kit, for the time being... ERIK, IF YOU'RE LISTENING...it's bad enough that Buell's orphaned us tubers, but now you're taking away the P&A too? Say it ain't so, Joe! Don't leave us to the mercy of the aftermarket. I fully understand your move to the XB and all, but come on...ck

I read on this topic that someone wanted to see an M2 with a S-3 fairing and hard bags.....

Forget the bags (for me anyway) and add a chin fairing with the S-3 front fairing, and I'll take it!

-SB

Is there a chin fairing availible for the 2000 M2?
