I was just wondering...

I've spent alot of time in Austria, and every time I meet anyone who rides and tell them I ride a Buell, they say oh, a Boo-ell! Do you think it took the people at Rotax pronounce Erik's name properly yet?

It's a German name. Maybe it's not them pronouncing it incorrectly.

Of course, but as all language is living, and Buell is a US company, I would tend to think the way the name is pronounced here is correct when referring to a Buell motorcycle.

This reminds me of a conversation I had at gas station not long ago.

I hear from across the pumps, "Hey, is that a Byew-ELL." I reply, "A what??".
"A Byew-ELL?"... I then say, "Well, it is a Buell (byewl), if that is what you are asking."... to which I hear, "No, man... It is pronounced Byew 'ELL, you should know that if you own one."
I mention that Erik pronounces his last name as Byewl. And the next thing out of his mouth is "Erik who??"
I just finished putting my gas cap on, and headed off.

I figure, if you are going to try to correct someone... at least have a clue about what you are talking.

I have a '51 Willys CJ-3A and we all pronounce it Will-eez, but the the proper name, the way the company founder pronounced his name was Wil-lis. Just another example.

I had a southern gentleman in a gas station in Tennessee look at the name on the tank, spell it out loud-B U E L L- and proclaim it was "one o' them Birelli's" right? I just nodded my head.

I love the 3B, just ugly enough to be cool, plus that OHV motor has more guts, but I couldn't pass up this beauty.

Right now I'm pronouncing it Kubuntu.
I've always liked KDE.
"Red-HAT"
Yes, that's what I cut my teeth on, that and Suse.
Now both aren't as "free" as they once were.
Still great distributions.
Debian rules though.

Please don't post pics of flat fenders, I probably shouldn't have gotten rid of my CJ2A but didn't want to watch it rust away here in the salted winter wonderland.

Buell, pronounce it like the e and u are reversed, sort of. I still find the occasional person here locally who thought Buell went out of business years ago when I'm gassing up one of the Buells.

Linux, Ubuntu, stuff, been thinking of learning how to pronounce them among doing other stuff with them.

'scuse me now, I feel the need to wander down to the test lab and ask about teflon tapes....

Sean - I can't see the pic at work, but it must be nice if your posting it.

I saw a guy who with a little work (and I do mean little) was able to fit a flat-fender body on a CJ-5 frame and was able to keep the dauntless v6...i think that would be the best bet for me - flat fender style with a little more real-world usability.

When I saw my first Buell and the resultant immediate stiffie, I walked up to the guy and asked him what it was. He was English, and pronounced it Buel-la. Took me a long time to figure out he meant Buell. I think I owned one within 60 days of finally being smart enough to find Buell.com.

Over in Russia, Buell is pronounced very close to the verb meaning past tense. ie it was, they were etc. I can only imagine that a phone inquiry for their inventory would sound like an old Abbott & Costello take off.

It would make a funny video to catch all of these "Hey isn't that a..." -insert mispronunciation/other bike name - moments. Maybe even make a commercial out of it.

"Buell (byewl-real pronunciation) not just a name, its an an obsession."

or

Buell 25 years of American Motorcycles.

Someone please provide a better tag line.
