I want to get a scooter. To ride around town run errands (needs cargo space maybe top case/basket) and pit bike. I would like it to go at least 40mph. Can I do that with a 50cc 2-smoke?

Wife likes the look of the euro style scoots.

Right now top of my list is yamaha vino/C3 or honda metro.

I think the honda elite is fugly.

Any ideas, suggestions, snide remarks?

Patrick McGinley took his Aprilia Scrabeo (50cc 4-stroke) from Glendale to Fort Worth ON A BET!! WEARING A BUNNY SUIT!!! (really, I'm not kidding)

It does have larger wheels so it's not too squirrely. I've ridden it and it's not too bad.

I think if you had the patience and the wind at your back, it's capable of 45-50... maaaaaybe.

I can't tell you how many beers it cost before that bet was made but his buddy (who then owned the scooter) said he'd bet him $2500 if he'd ride the scooter to Fort Worth... a few beers later, he said if he did it in a bunny suit, he'd sign the title over to him.

Patrick was a cameraman between gigs at the time so he got his dad to follow him - and got the money AND the scooter! (after the longest test ride I have ever heard of!)

There's always the Sachs MadASS. Haven't ridden one so can't testify about its handling or performance but it sure LOOKS cool for a scooter (and they also make a 125cc version) - 50cc in pic below:

OK - on to snide remarks...

You have a budget?

quote:

Are you ever cruising on your Vespa, listening to The Kinks, pondering the plot of Absolute Beginners, and fantasizing about Twiggy when you think, "Hey, I need to check my email"? Well, you're in luck, because Quang Nguyen, a forward thinking Vespa-modder (no pun intended) has managed to cram a touchscreen rockin', WiFi sportin', XP-equipped PC into his red GTS250. Sure, he's also got a Louis Vuitton seat, but that isn't nearly as exciting as the prospect of being able to watch Quadrophenia and update your MySpace profile from any spot you happen to motor towards. Just make sure to watch out for the Rockers.

I, many moons ago, accepted a similar "you can't ride that thing on the interstate" booze-fueled challenge.

Before long, I had a very scared rider aboard a Cushman 711 Highlander scooter (with my beer sitting on the floorbard) splitting lanes between tractor trailers on I-70.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

Went to Jap bike shop today during lunch. They had no clue about the scoots. Kinda like buells @ an HD shop, execpt they dont do test drives.

Found a local scooter shop here in nashville. Great peeps. They know there stuff. They wanted me to demo all the scoots to find my fav.

I think I have found what I want. I still need to do some research.

Here are the two I like.

The Genuine Buddy 125cc 4 stroke 65mph+ auto CVT trans

or

The Genuine Stella 150cc 2 smoke 60mph+ (steel body!) 4-speed manual transmission

That stella is a clone of the old Vespas complete with manual tranny and spare tire.
I always wanted to try one out.

As I said above ...

BRING THE RUCKUS !!!

and the BIG RUCKUS ....

That said .. I'd buy the Ruckus in a heartbeat .. they sell tons of performance junk to make it go faster and have a higher top speed

Just buy an old motorcycle,I have a couple of RV-90 Suzukis I am restoring and a Yamaha Trailmaster 100. All with rack and 2 up capable, both will do over most city speed limits. Can be had cheap.I got the pair of 90's for 350 with one being good runner.--Course I could not leave em alone and they are all being restored.
My brother was just given a Yamaha 360 Enduro with 1600 miles. He had it running in 20 minutes.

My coworker rides a Burgman 650. We recently went on a road trip with another coworker on his valkyrie. There we are a Buell, Burgman and valkyrie cruising down the highway together. It was a scene that should have been in "Wild Hogs".

The Burgman is a decent ride, we exceeded 100mph a couple of times.

There's another guy here that rides a Ruckus. He's over 6' tall and looks comical riding it.

I saw on of those Piaggio's a while back and I wondered WTF it was.

We use an Elite 80, I know you said they are fugly, but there is a pic here on Badweb of it in action at the races!
It pulls a two wheel cart with two people, burns any fuel (likes leftover race fuel: )
And serves as a grocery getter too. Happy shopping!

where is the shifter on that stella? that's kinda cool.

If the Stella is like an original Vespa, you squeeze the clutch lever and rotate the entire left handgrip/clutch lever assembly to shift.

Vespas up to 125cc were 3 speeds and 150cc and higher were 4 speeds IIRC

I've had a '52 125cc 3sp. Allstate sold by Sears, built by Vespa, a '61 Cushman/Vespa - they had a joint venture for about 1 1/2 yrs.
and a nice '64 150 cc 4sp.

Personally I'm a Cushman scooter kinda guy, but they're getting a little pricey - restored in the $4-6,000 range. My current scoot is '63 Super Silver Eagle with a stroked crankshaft, 30mm Mikuni, 10" billet wheels with Bridgestone Hoop sneakers. I'm getting ready to tear into it again this winter and make a mini "bagger" with smaller Roadking style saddlebags and a cut down Electraglide front fairing. Top speed w/o front fairing was in the 70-75 mph range. Plenty fast for 10" wheels and lousy 6" drum brakes......

My brother has a Honda Helix. It has a built in storage box on the back big enough to keep his helmet in while a work. Twist-n-go. 250cc, top speed 72 mph. Trust me I tried to get 73, but it wasn't gonna happen. His has the optional Kenwood AM/FM also.

Honda Helix----- My wife rides a black 2001 model. We took off all the Honda emblems and replaced them with official BMW rondels, put a short, smoked Cee Bailey windscreen on it. You wouldn't believe the comments she gets every time she stops. "Wow, I didn't know BMW made scooters". She's ridden it 8,000 miles, Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, Canada. 75 mph.
