I keep hearing how loud the fans are on Ulysses'. Aren't the fans on the other XBs just as loud? Nobody is complaining about how loud the fans are on their Firebolts or Lightnings.
I don't mind the fan noise, it's a good conversation starter, but I'm curious about the other models.

I've only heard one non-Uly fan. From about 20 feet it was not that loud. I think the Ulysses fan complaints are mainly a demographics or market complaint. In other words a 20 something is less likely to complain about the fan noise than a 50 something rider.

The fan shouldn't be louder than the engine/exhaust, that's just wrong...

I've heard both, and I don't think the fan on the Uly is any louder than the other XB's.

XBs are all the same, from what I have heard, and I think Teeps nailed the reason. Also they are wealthier customers, I'll bet.

The fan is part of life and sets the Buell apart. I kinda enjoy the odd looks I get when I turn it off and walk away.

HA! I'm so broke I'm having trouble paying attention. I may be an exception, but the Uly riders that I've met aren't any better off financially than any other Buell owners I've met. They do tend to travel more, though.

I believe that the secret is that the Uly has brought many more first time Buell owners into the "flock". It's my first.

You guys who have ridden them for years know that they all sound like that.

What was interesting was when I rode with another Bueller on a 9R. When Warbaby, ChadHargis, the 9R rider and I shut down our bikes, they all had the fan going. They all were singing at the same pitch. They all shut down withing a second of one another.

None were any louder than any others.

PS. Wealthier riders ride GS's. Buells are relegated to the "knuckle draggers".

My City-X fan was the same as my Uly fan is.

These fans are SO much quieter than those dry clutch Ducs. A guy had one idling fifty feet from me at a gas station at the base of the Cherohala Skyway this weekend. I could not even hear his loud pipes over the rattling.

Fan............I don't hear no stinkin' fan.............des' o'dder bike is rattling so much............I can't hear no fan.

Why?

You miss it when it isn't there!! I made a quick ride to the grocery yesterday early am. It was only a few miles, but I was surprised when the fan wasn't on when I stopped. I started thinking of all the things that could be wrong, but it was working fine when I got home.

When I ride with my friend who owns an XB12R, I tell the gawkers that the sound they hear is the Flux Capacitor recharging...

I want mine to sound like a jet turbine winding up and down.

Now how do I go about doing that.

I wonder if they make a whistle that I could stick behind the fan to give it a "fun" sound?

If it's too loud, you're too old.

It's the other way around.
As one gets older, the fan gets quieter compared to the noise in your head.

Teeps says "The fan shouldn't be louder than the engine/exhaust, that's just wrong..."

Completely agree. I am very close to wiring up a kill switch for the fan so I can kill it when the time is right.

I quietly rolled into a HD parking lot on Sunday with a pile of hogs parked and enjoying the shade on the side of the building and that fan was louder than my exhaust. It was like I was riding an electric moped or something. It is not the air movement that makes the noise by my guess but it is the motor or something. I wish I could service/lube it and make it run more quietly. Sometimes it is just not what you want. It is just crying out for a better engineering solution.

I've fried a rear cylinder on a sporty before (overheat in ATL traffic).

having seen that before makes me love the fan, noise and all. it is louder than the stock exhaust, though.

Alchemy,

Just get a louder exhaust! ;)

I really, LIKE the sound of the fan. If you've ever been in or flown light aircraft, the sound in your ears is very similar to the fan. Makes me feel more like a pilot than a rider.

That and the bird strikes.

FB,

I would just like the fan to be a non-issue really and it is annoying. A change in the frequency or loudness would be a welcome improvement in my riding enjoyment. The exhaust note is fine with me. Maybe I just need a noisier helmet<grin>.

Court,
I grew up on the Zep too and all the others.
I can hear the fan loud and clear, when cruising up PCH @ 50mph, with full face helmet and ear plugs.
When ambient temp is <60F.degrees, and the fan is wailing away. To me, the fan running AND being that loud... Well, that is just wrong.

I have said before the fan noise is a market issue. Whether Buell cares to fix the market quality issue, is up to them.

Hey! I saw Led Zeppelin on their first U.S. tour, back in May of 1969. I was pissed off because the tickets cost three bucks instead of the usual $2.50 at the Boston Tea Party. They put on an amazing performance which included four encores that lasted over an hour.
Maybe that's why my loud(?) fan doesn't bother me?
