Hey, our recently-least-favorite-nation did something worthwhile:

Hugh - -it may be YOUR recently-least-favorite-nation (and many others, I"m sure), but I think that "our" may be a bit more inclusive than would be entirely accurate --

honorable people can disagree, and remain honorable -- so, too, nations . . . .

Bomber, I didn't mean to imply everyone here hates France. I was just referring to my impression of the popular opinion of France in the U.S. since 9/11.

Hugh -- good point -- didn't mean to poke you in the eye, and if that's how my post was read, I apologize

While I disagree with France's recent (40 years or so) stance wrt the Middle East, I believe it's a mistake to generalize

it's way too easy to mistake a government with those it governs -- when I go overseas, I am always amazed that people ask me why our (USA) government did this thing or that, like I was on the phone with GWB on a regular basis ;-}

Considering most published UFO reports, with rural folk getting captured, probed, & released, one has to ask what their motivation is. Maybe they saw "The Day The Earth Stood Still" on TV & believe they would receive poor treatment at the Govt.'s hands. ( I'd sure bet that way )

The only explanation I was ever able to come up with, is they are Frat boys ( Sorority girls ) doing the alien version of tipping cows. Borrow Dad's saucer, fly into the off limits primitive reservation, & mess with the townies.

Did you ever notice the Placard on the Statue of Liberty? Give us your tired huddled masses etc. I think it is because France did not want the riff and the raff in their coulture. Thankfully it works for us : D

Americans taking the piss outta the French is kinda funny.

HOW did they GET TO the Americas?

While some populations, perhaps the genetic and cultural forbears of the Clovis people, walked across the "land bridge" and down the ice-free corridor in western Canada, some theorists are beginning to consider the possibility that people migrated to the Americas by walking or boating along the now submerged Beringia and the continental shelves of North, Central, and South America. While older ideas stressed that the late Ice-Age glaciers extended down and into the Pacific ocean, newer studies have shown that this was not the case. Indeed, even our ideas about the environment of the entire "land bridge" have changed markedly in the last several decades. Perhaps the "ice-free" corridor was along the Pacific coast of the Americas, which would help explain why some of the oldest sites in the Americas are in South, not North America. Other scientists have proposed a migration of boat people from Europe, basing their hypothesis on what they perceive as shared technologies and tool types between Clovis and Solutrean people who lived in France around 18,000 years ago. Presumably, European boat people would have used much the same route that the Norse (Vikings) did thousands or years later (around 1,100 years ago), when they settled in Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and the northeastern U.S.

Good points -- the genetic data we've got thus far provides good supporting evidence for both migratory paths --

interesting times to be in that field of study

First dibs on your offer Sir Grump!

Some Americans need to remember that it was the French who supported us during our war of revolution against King George. If not for les Francais, America might still be a subject of the British monarchy.

Off to Newfieland at Easter to see Bill.

To the centenary TT on IoM in June;

Pyrenees for a week in Aug with some French mates to go slay the mountain twisties.

And I have to go to work sometimes too!

Actually, regarding France's least favorite nation status here in the US, methinks that this has changed in the last year (although there has been no public declaration...due to the embarrassment and all). History and current events tell us that France was correct about the Iraq situation all along. French fries, anyone?

Jimi,

The government of France agreed with everyone else in the free world that SH and his regime were concealing weapons of mass murder banned by the UN; they also agreed that Iraq was subverting weapons inspections and repeatedly violating the terms of UN resolutions; France also agreed that SH and his regime were violating terms of the cease fire.

Not sure what you imagine the French government was "right" about. The hard truth is that if the French government had stood with us and the British against SH, the escalation and eventual resumption of hostilities against SH would likely have never had to happen. SH would have backed down long before escalation of the situation occurred and he certainly would not have been trying to shoot down coalition aircraft.

We now also know that key influential political figures in France, Russia, and Germany were being bribed by SH to allow the massive corruption of the UN's oil for food program.

We also know that the vast majority of weaponry and other large military/industrial contracts with the regime of SH involved those same nations.

But hey, don't let that stop you from always blaming America first.
