i nominate me:
taken this afternoon on Highway 395 a little north of Mammoth Lakes, California
in the background you can see several vehicles in the process of chaining up
looking south
looking north
since i didn't have four-wheel drive (or chains), i had to take a 150-mile detour into Nevada and back to get around this mountain pass. FB (Message edited by jerry_haughton on March 30, 2006) |

I made it across Donner in crap almost as bad as that. On an S1. Only difference is that there was enough traffic to keep the "slush trails" open right on the car tire paths. I had to thread a foot-wide needle the whole way. Front brake fluid froze. I had a rear brake, no front. Got down below the snowline on the California side, stopped at a gas station and hosed the front brake down until it worked again. Had the most amazing star-pattern of icycles off the front brake rotor. Dragging your heels in the slush to measure available traction is a good idea before each corner. |

That is definitely bad weather biking..... Reminds me of diablomichael circa 1990, riding his katana in the snow with a worn out rear tire. Then again it was his only means of transportation, and money was tight. Anyway, You wouldn't get me out riding in that, not willingly. Guess I'm too much of a sissy. |

You mean you found a reason to add 150 miles to the trip and thus more riding! ssshhhhhhhhhhh.................. Ferris, You win. Can't wait for more pics. You going to be around this weekend? Gotta give you a jingle and update you on life. Lots of exciting stuff going on. Hope you made it home safe! i'm back home, safe and (relatively) sound! yep, i'll be home. not many pix from the trip (too busy dealing with rain and snow), but a few more are posted below. Damn, Ferris. Are you nuts? it would appear so. Did you get a knee down at all? not on purpose... I made it across Donner in crap almost as bad as that. On an S1. Only difference is that there was enough traffic to keep the "slush trails" open right on the car tire paths. my "escape route" yesterday into Nevada entailed several 7000-plus-foot mountain passes, one of which that had slushy snow across the top, and i had to follow tire tracks as you describe. there were plenty of times yesterday i wished i was on a Rokon... Anyway, You wouldn't get me out riding in that, not willingly. i rode up to Washington and back to help Ma Bueller celebrate her 82nd birthday. had a WONDERFUL time, but dealt with seriously severe weather in four states on the trip. maybe i could get her to move her birthday ahead a couple of months??? Life sucks!!!! indeed. Gads.....ride safely! in all seriousness, the closest call i had on this trip was slipping and falling in the bathtub at my motel room in Lakeview, Oregon on my way north. came THIS close to bashing my head on the side of the tub. from now on, i bathe with my Arai on! The wimp is riding with a FAIRING!!!! AND a full complement of heated gear. Yea, and those damn FJ's get so hot that he was probably nice and toasty sitting on that warm seat... there's more than a little truth to that. didn't have the heart to tell him once he got around the white stuff he was headed for the worse rain we've seen yet there's more than a little truth to THAT, too. God Bless you and all the guys and gals over there. I know its been said before, but here goes anyway. THANK YOU ALL, and ALL YOU ALL. Amen!!! Your my hero Ferris. thank you, "Cameron." Hows the book? if it ever makes it from my head to the printed page, it should be an entertaining read. let a man have some heated clothes, and he'll try any damn thing!!! true! for this trip i had Widder heated vest, arm chaps, leg chaps and gloves, Gerbing heated socks, Yamaha heated grips, along with one-piece Aerostich Roadcrafter suit and Patagonia Capilene underlayer. snicker if y'all will, but would you drive your car or truck in the winter without using the heater??? me, either. here's a few more pix, courtesy of Jim Corso/Pdxs3t/Digital Photo Northwest: Mount St. Helens, taken Saturday morning 3/25/06 note the steam plume rising out of the crater i had a GREAT time hooking up with Jim, Eric and Danny on Saturday. awesome riding, stunning views and cool camaraderie were our reward for braving rain, fog, snow and ice. in fact, i hereby nominate my three riding partners for "BadWeatherBiker Of The Day" patches, too. ride to lean, FB |

Jerry, must've been an awfully boring day in paradise to "have" to go riding in snow But then, this is almost SOP for the wanderlust icon who instigated a Sport Bike magazine, SPLASH, Four-Play, dare I say Blue Groove, SCAB, FBRAT... ... I know there's more -- what have I missed? Yup, Sleez, you nailed it. "Ferris Cooler" |

...Sport Bike magazine, SPLASH, Four-Play, dare I say Blue Groove, SCAB, FBRAT... ... I know there's more -- what have I missed? Sparky, lessee...the "Blue Groove" concept is Reg Kittrelle's baby (all rights reserved, etc.), altho "Blue Groove/Northwest" in '97 was a lot of my doing. and i think i'm right when i say that 99.9% of the credit for "SCAB" (Southern California Area Buellers) belongs to Admiral Joel "Big J" Chewning. the rest of it? as you well know, it's a cross between lust and addiction, and there's only one known remedy: more of the same!!! Seth, i'd say "bonkers" is entirely accurate. FB (Message edited by jerry_haughton on March 30, 2006) |

but would you drive your car or truck in the winter without using the heater??? As a routine in the winter I drive with the window down and the heater off; only using the defroster when needed. Oh yeah. You're the guy that tried to sell me his old heated clothing. HA!!! 38 years of riding scooters the year around and no 'lectrics yet. Too many strings attached for me. Maybe when I'm older than dirt too. |
