I promised myself not to mess with my new black'04 12R till it reached its first 1K service. That time has come. My bone stock (except for S pegs) XB has been serviced according to the manual, except for the TPS reset, which will be done after the mods.

Here is where you guys come in.

I have saved just about $1000 that is now burning a major hole in my pocket. What mods would you do if you were in my shoes?

Keep the following in mind:

--I am a fairly laid back rider (most of the time) and the bike is for the street only.
--I would like to increase performance without giving up driveability or dependability.
--Louder is good and wanted, but not 'you gotta wear earplugs' loud.
--I want to improve the looks of the stock XB12R, but I do not like carbon fiber.
--Improved comfort would be nice.
--I have average mechanical skills and will be doing all work myself.
--I do not need bags or storage.
--I already own the basics, stands, manuals, etc.
--I already know about most of the free/cheap mods like the airbox and snorkle stuff.

I am sure you guys could think of many non-bike things to do with a grand, but lets leave that to another thread. (unless it is really interesting)!

Well, get to it! Spend my money!

Chris

Track school or track days.

If you were a golfer asking your buddies which brand of new clubs would make you a better player and allow you to enjoy your game more, good buddies would tell you to spend your money on lessons.

1. track days -- you got enuff for 7 or 8, easy!

or,

2. a semi-beater dirt bike -- go play in the dirt, you'll be a much better street rider for it

best investment is ALWAYS in the rider!

Spend time reading up on how to setup the suspension properly - and how to make proper adjustments. PROPER Suspension will do a lot more to improving your confidence in braking, handling/turning than more HP/Noise... then spend your money on:

1) Track days
2) Diablo Corsa tires (apologies to Erik Buell but I think the Pirelli work better - IMHO)
3) Frame pucks (I wish I had bought them!!!)
4) Zero Gravity sport touring windscreen

There's just no need to mess with the motor - though a lighter weight slip-on muffler can does sound sweet - but here in CA, they're starting to give tickets for non-factory exhausts (I've heard)

Track days and tires.

If you REALLY need parts and ONLY if you have ALL the gear you need...

Penske rear shock.

Drummer, Race ECM, PCIII, Dyno tune.

Force, Race ECM, PCIII, Dyno tune.

CRG Levers, ZG ST screen, NorrisPerformance Catch Can, Tires, Track days.

Lightweight Clutch Basket and Final drive pulley.

A set of rear sets...

Me, I'd go with number four...

I've seen enough wrecked XB Buells to know that frame pucks and axle sliders on front and rear can save a whole lot of heart ache.

Coming from someone who just low sided a 12R: Axle sliders and frame pucks should be at the top of your list.

Some times you'll get lucky and the frame won't touch the ground in a light crash, but most of the time it will. A new frame is ~$1400, frame pucks are ~$40. They're well worth it. However, even a gentle crash will rash the swingarm every time. I went down without the axle sliders and now my swingarm isn't as pretty as it used to be.

On the other hand, if you don't already have good riding gear forget everything I said and go get good gear now. The bike can always be repaired or replaced if needed. The same cannot be said for you.

I spent about $600 for the Drummer and the Race ECM + K&N and couldn't be much happier. Gave me the additional loudness saying "I'm here don't run over me". Sounds good I might add, but not enough to need E-plugs. Not to radical where one may encounter additional problems.

That was 30,000+ miles ago.
