Ok here is the story, Yesturday on the way into work i lost my passenger front Wheel bearing to the gods of frustration. When i removed the wheel to replace the old bearing w/ new, i attempted to remove the old bearing, and found it to be pritty much welded to the spindle. Here is the problem. w/ this car the front hub/rotor are still attached... I am thinking about useing Autozone's, slide hammer/and flange attachment to try to pull it off.. i was wonding if you (anyone) think it would work? If not do you have any better ideas...? Oh yeah the car is 72 miles from my house, in the parking garage by my work... so it isn't close by... unless i am at work....

I am about to the point where i get a whole new stearing knuckle.... it might be easier.. lol

it is my 1983 Pontiac Firebird T/A. It is the Front Wheel Bearing (outside) inner Race. I heated it w/ a torch (not blow torch)... it is BAD!..

Unfortunately no I wont be available I have to work over tomorrow. If you have any questions you can call me at 734-323-2909. I think the slide hammer would probably be your best bet though.I had a 89 rs with the same problem and a slide hammer worked.

did you heat it up first? I also need to re-thread the spindle... cause of course they are stripped

It might be easier to grab a whole front strut assembly from a J/Y and just replace it in one shot. I did that on my old truck when I welded the inner race to the spindle.

Dude if it is that bad and you need to get it home, replace the spindle.
That is a lot of work to do in a parking garage.

What Wycked said.

Don't p**s about swap the strut it'll be quicker easier & probably cheaper too, try to buy a pair if you can.
Even if you get the bearing off with the slide hammer you're then going to have to clean up the spindle to get the new bearings on & then hope there's no tight spots or it'll eat the new bearings, or if its too loose, the whole thing will be trash.
I don't think it's worth the effort.
Also another thing to bear in mind, if you have to replace the hub/disc assembly you'll need new pads both sides or it'll pull like mad under braking.
Best of luck with it, I'd come & help you myself, but it's a long swim from here.

OK bro, IF you can find a puller large enough, you will notice on teh end of the spinlde, the is a recess, you and pull the rotor/hub off with that. Other wise, you mist just have to remove the spindle assy from teh strut, and the control arm, and get anotehr from a Z-28 or a t/a. in 82-84, the were sublte difference in the z28/ws6 RPOs vices the berlinetta and standard, thoguh I right now cant remember if it was justsway bars, or upgraded brakes as well...

BUT, if you have that much heat damage, you SHOULD replace the hub anyway, and possilby the spinle as well, if there is any scorching on the spindle, replace it, dont get cheap with front end parts..

Again, there will be 1 or 2 bolts holding the spindle to the strut, then 1 fo rthte ball joint..remove those, use somethign to hold the caliper up, and get another spindle assy, and rotor..install, and take IMMEDIATELY to an alignment shop...

HTH

Adam,

Please not you CANT cut the wheel off - the car just won't work right.

HAHAHAHAHA

I'd haul the car back home then repair it.

Fly me over a day or so before the Homecoming and I'll help fix it.
