Weird thing happened today-

I met new12r for lunch and we stopped at A&W. We were parking our bikes and this guy B-lines it across the parking lot to us. He starts telling us how he bought an 03 XB Firebolt but he couldn't get it to run right to save his life.
We talked for a bit then he says that he had enough and traded it in last Summer at Cycle World of Athens- DOH (That's where I bought my XB9R in Aug of last year)

New12r and I just looked at each other and I told the guy- "Well this is/was YOUR bike" he said no mine was a lighter blue- to which I had to explain to him how I dyed the plastic. He then went over and looked at the headers and said "This was my bike, I polished the headers before I traded it in". (I always wondered who did that, I thought it was the dealer thinking it needed to look more 'Harleyish' oh well)

He was surprised when I told him I hadn't had any trouble and that his problem was that he had the wrong spark plugs in it. It has a race kit on it and he said he thought it had the performance plugs. New12r was the one that pulled them out and verified that they weren't. I told him now that it has the right plugs in it I haven't had any problems.
Poor guy, traded in a perfectly good bike because of spark plugs. But I'm glad he did cuz his loss was my gain.
Apparently I bought the bike for $600 more than he traded it in for, and 2k under blue book. LOL I guess CW thought there was a problem with it too and just wanted to get rid of it.
What a freakin' small world, in fact he said that he was with a group of riders parked at the church last weekend off hwy 60 in the North GA mtns when we all went by.

Just Crazy

Good story. Congratulations with your excellent bike. Possible suspicions, about the reasons why the former owner sold his bike, are gone now. Happy you.

That is classic
Thanks for sharing that. I'll be chuckling over that for a while.

It was all for the best. You probably ride that R & care for it better than he ever did.

Cool story. The sad part about it is this guy is probably one of those people that goes around saying "all Buells are junk" because of a mistake HE made. A4, hopefully you educated him to the error of his ways.

I did very tactfully, I didn't want him to feel too bad.

I know she does!!!!

Why thank you Todd

What's really funny about it was he got to see it perform when we flew by them in the Mountains. So he knows I wasn't just talkin' smack.
I figured he just didn't have a true understanding of the bike. He was coming off a jap bike and had unrealistic expectations of a stock Buell-
That and he only went 1/2 way with his mods.
He put the race kit on it but didn't upgrade anything else. I bet he would have been more pleased had he used the right plugs and synthetic fluids. I know I am
He said something about how he had trouble with the boot and plug wires. Well I had seen on here how the plug wires can rub so I taped them up and haven't had any problems.
Thanks Badweb

Always amazes me how some intimaticy with the bike can make all the difference between a happy owner and an unhappy one...

I can totally understand this guys problem. There were probably times I would have thought about getting rid of mine if not for this board. For example, my bike runs a little rough, fouls plugs constantly and pops on decel. From seeing some other posts, I think it's because the guy that owned it previously didn't have the TPS reset after he installed the Race ECM. I also wouldn't have known about the problems with the wheel bearings.

There is a lot of information and helpful folks on this site and it can make a huge difference to us newbies as to whether we purchase/keep our bikes.

That emotional thing....I totally agree...it is like a relationship and you got to talk to each other. Since I started doing most of the work on my bike I have rediscovered why my memories of the FatBoy were so strong.

I know relationship stuff sounds crazy but when you hear a clunk or some other behavior that is not right...the bike is telling you somthing! Listen to it!

I too have had the "small world" thing happen but usually the other way around from what Along4theride experienced...the next owner would noted problems I never had a hint of at all...one guy had put something like 60,000 miles on an FZ I had without changing the plugs or valve adjustments...literally it sounded like a herd of chickens running down the road...

If not for the support on this site, another thing that helps is local support. In my area there very few of us Buell riders. I would gladly help one locally if they need it.

My first bike was a Buell because my Riders Edge instructor pointed out that the Blast was a good bike for beginners. My second bike is a Buell pretty much because of Badweb, and the people I have met through here. It's funny. This site is a tremendous asset to Buell. But there is no way they could have created it themselves. It takes someone like Blake, who doesn't work for them, to make something this good.
