I just purchased a Corbin gunfighter+lady seat off another badwebber. Who I am NOT blaming for this OBVIOUS lack of quality. But WOW, could they get any further off than this?

And this is AFTER I had moved all the bodywork back as far as I could, which was about 3/16 to a 1/4". DO ALL the S3 seats from corbin fit this bad? I've talked to another Brag member, and his fits EXACTLY like this. I also tried it on another S3, same thing.

I've seen Chinese molds fit closer than this crap.

That blows! i have the gunfighter+lady seat on my x-1 and it fits great. I have heard of this before with the M-2 corbin seat.

Please keep any criticisms of products and their manufacturers to a factual objective form. I've revised the unfortunate inflamatory title you chose for this thread.

It was entirely inappropriate.

No, Corbin is not a sponsor or a prospective sponsor of this board. I don't even own a Corbin seat. Just trying to maintain the integrity of the board and do away with inappropriate inflammatory statements. Nothing personal, no outside motives of any kind. I'm explaining this as-nausium because the last time I attempted to intercede on such an issue BadWeB lost a sponsor and I lost a friend(s) over it. Thanks for understanding. Above all I hope you find a not too painful solution to the problem.

As to your seat fitment problem...

Would it be tough to relocate the interface plate on the tail section to accommodate the mismatched hold-down bolt?

1st off Blake, while I take offense to your title change, questioning my word. I respect this place as yours, but my original title was 100% factual.

Blake, tough to relocate? I guess you're unfamiliar with S3s. It wouldn't just be difficult. It would be impossible to move it enough for it to be close. Unless I want to cut the original mounting tabs & latch off the frame and relocate them. The picture above is AFTER I had moved the plate & bodywork back about 3/16"-1/4". I should have taken a picture with the plate removed from the body. The seat bolt doesn't even hit the oversized hole in the bodywork itself!

I am also not the 1st to experience this with the Corbin S3 seats.
it fits like it was designed for another bike - CRAP

I will for that reason alone never buy Corbin again

My only recourse is to either NOT run the pin, and rely on the rear locking latch(which had to be bent up to even come close to fitting also). Or make an offset pin.

For whatever it's worth, my Corbin S3T seat was the same. Matter of fact, I ordered it with custom stitching too. If I recall, I paid around $500.00 for that puppy. It also started tearing at a couple of the seams. Hated the damn thing too. It threw me forward even more into the gas tank than the stock seat. Weird thing is I bought a stock 99 S3T Buell seat (back in 99) that was only like $175.00 and I loved it. Hey, Corbin did make a good seat at one point in time ... and I had hair too.

I came very close to buying a Corbin gunfighter and lady seat with backrest (a $300 extra IIRC) for my S3 on ebay a couple of weeks ago for ~$200 BIN. I'm glad I didn't.

Smokedaddy- what you say about the Corbin is interesting. A guy had told me at March Badness that the Corbin on his S3 moved him back too much. I wonder if this is just personal preference or if the seats actually vary that much?

Instead of buying a Corbin, I ended up picking up an extra stock seat for $32, which I plan to send to Sargent Seat in Jacksonville, Florida. I've previously had a seat reworked by them for my 1983 Honda Ascot and they do very nice work. They have a lot of available options with standard prices and are supposed to be very good about working with you to determine what modifications will work best for you. About 10 of us from the Yahoo Ascot Enthusiasts group had our seats reworked by Sargent and all of us were happy with the results.

For what it's worth...

Could you move the seat bolt to fit the bike?

I have a Corbin for the S1 and it fits like a glove.

Maybe a phone call or e-mail to Corbin explaining the situation and showing a photo could fix the problem.

Back during the Buell 20th I ran across a Corbin Truck that was setting up for the Harley 100th and asked where I could get a few of the little rubber stoppers that fit on the bottom as mine were worn completely from normal use. The rep went into the truck, poked around a bit then came out with a handful. Handed them to me, I asked "How Much?" and he told me "On the house!".

Often a good manufacturer will stand by their products. That seat obviously was not measured or manufactured properly.

Steve,
If I remember correctly I kinda had the same problem when I got a Corbin for my 99 S3. I believe the problem was the seat was fitted to an older S3 originally which probably didn't have the giant stack of gas tank hold downs getting in the way at the front tab of the seat. Try removing the bottom half of the hold down stack and see if that allows the sseat to go more forward. You really don't need both sets of teetth eating away at the plastic of your tank anyways. One set is sufficient. You might also try bending the front tab down more so it can clear the tank better. And in addition see if your gas tank has any room to slide more forward. Often times a previous owner has not pushed it all the ways forward when reinstalling.

I've had 2 Corbin seats for my S3's. Both have been a perfect fit and finish. But I did need to make a slight adjustment to the seat release. I beleive I adjusted the actual release (not the plate) up because you need to set the pin a little lower on the Corbin. Once I dialed in the release & pin, it fit like a glove. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

I see I'm being quoted on my opinion on the Corbin seat for the S3. I'm sorry you're struggling with the poor fit Steve. Wish I had some good advice.

The quality and design of that seat is a disgrace, and unfortunately, at the time, Corbin customer service was a perfect match for the seat.

... and for that reason I will never purchase a Corbin seat again.

Henrik, yup. I wouldn't have bought the corbin either. But longer rides, even the 99+ seat didn't do it for me. And I needed the backrest for young passengers. Like I said, I'll make myself an offset pin out of stainless

Whodom, yes, the corbin sets you back a good 1 1/2". It's a bonus for us taller folk with racekit air cleaners. My knee now clears it : )

Steve; If you're going to rework the seat, I can recommend the ProPad:

http://www.thepropad.com/propad/inserts.html

I did some reshaping to a '99 S3 seat and put a ProPad insert in the rider seating area = huge improvement on an already "OK" seat. I've since done the same to my S2 and SV650 seats. Worth the mess and effort.

I posted a long diatribe on insert tooling and technique awhile back - within the last maybe 4 months - do a search.

Btw. I understand about needing the backrest -wish I could get one for the S2.

I had my stock S3 seat reshaped and recovered by a local automotive shop with very good results and at a very reasonable price. The difference in looks is very subtle, but the difference in comfort is great. And they did the job in one day. I dropped the bike off in the morning and told them about what I wanted. At lunch time, they had me come by and try the seat as modified before recovering. They recovered it in the afternoon and I picked it up after work.

I'm sorry about your experience. Hope things get worked out for you.

Steve, I have been meaning to contact Corbin myself about my seat. (It is the same fit as Steve's) My delay has been that I was hoping the seat would break in a little and fit better. No luck. The fit is tight enough that I have noticed some spiderweb cracking around my seat lock.

I will take pictures this week(end) and send an e-mail to Corbin.

My personal opinion: It seems the older style seats fit better. I wonder if Corbin just modified their mold when the new style seat was released???

Steve:

The biggest problem with my Corbin was the front tab that goes under the frame near the tank. I had to bend this toward the engine (down) quite a bit before I could get the rear of the seat to come down.

This was after I had Corbin pick up my seat, put on the rear bracket that the lock latch grabs, and ship it back. Funny thing is, there was a decal on the seat that said "Brackets Okay." It should have said, "Brackets that have been installed are okay." I had to scan pictures in of the correct seat (thanks to a fellow Badwebber) and show them it was missing. Customer Service was very slow and misinformed.

All that said, I love the Corbin. It is much better than stock. The ability to move fore and aft and the angle of the seat is far superior than stock.

Steve,
Have you had any success in making it fit? Is the front catch the issue as Mark last wrote? A customer just received his brand new S3 seat and it apparently is exhibiting the same problem. I'm sure Corbin will fix it, but it would be nice to know what happened with yours.

Thanks,
Al

Al,

My Corbin was purchased through American Sport Bike when Tat owned the company. I have the same problem as above. Due to receiving my seat about a week before a trip, I did not follow through to Corbin expressing my dissatisfaction with the product.

In light of Steve bringing this up and your other customer experiencing the same issue, it looks like I should at least e-mail Corbin.

Aaron,
Pictures, please. I want to get this resolved. I've heard of people having some customer service issues with Corbin, but so far, they've been good about making things right. I've rejected a few customers seats since I've bought the biz, sent them back and had them reworked. They've stood behind their work. If there is a problem with the S3 latch or seat pin location, I'm pretty sure they'll make it right. I've made them aware of this thread.

Al, I don't think it's the front mount on mine. Just a VERY bad placement of the seat pin, AND I think the seat is about 1/16-1/8" too long for it to fit properly. Now, believe it or not, mine fits better than Aarons. Right now, I'm runing the seat without the pin. When I get some time, I'll make an offset pin for mine since emails to Corbin are going unanswered.

Al, thanks. I don't think I have much ground to stand on, since I'm NOT the original owner. So I'm not holding my breath.

Aaron, I'd also suggest to you to move your tail section back like I did. there are only 4 screws or so to loosen up, and have someone else pull back on the tail section, and tighten them up. The seat may then fit a bit better. Still wont solve the bad seat pin location, but it will relieve some of the stress you're putting on the rear latch.

Al, I will try and get some pictures this weekend when I load it in the trailer for the move. Hopefully I can get them to you by mid next week. I do still have the original box and I think I can find the receipt if necessary. Thanks for your continued support Al!!!!!

Al, Should pics be sent to sales at your company name dot com, with the S3 seat issues in the subject?

Steve, I will give that a try.

Steve,
The picture went to a red X. Please send it to me asap. The Corbin rep went here to see it per my request but didn't get here before the picture turned to a red x.

IF you can, please post the picture as an actual image here instead of an imagelink.

Thanks,

Kinger, to make the seat fit better than it currently does. take off the seat, loosen BOTH the tang hold down bolt, and the tail section bolts. Have someone stand in front of the big, pulling on the tank towards the front of the bike, tighten that bolt down, then pull the tail section backwards, and tighten those screws down. It gives you about 3/16"-1/4" more space, which SHOULD bring the seat down for you. It still wont work with the current seat pin, but it will fit better, and reduce some of the stress you're putting on the rear seat latch.
