I've been trying to do a search through the knowledge vault for some answers but for some reason each time I veiw a page I can't hit the back button and return to the list of topics. Instead I have to re-enter the search question and start over. Is this just my computer?

Maybe I should rephrase that. It's the key-word utility search that's giving me grief, not the KV.

It works fine for me too. I just checked and all settings remain the same, including the keywords searched for.

Maybe you need to check your browser settings?

PS, I use Firefox.

How about changing your prefs to open clicked link in a new window. That way you just close the newly opened window and you're back to your search results.

Of course, if you were using a Mac and Safari, Tabbed Browsing is the cats meow. Just Command-click on a link, and the linked page opens in a tab in the same window.

Or Mozilla Firefox on any platform by CTRL-Click. But Yes, I prefer safari : )

Or right click on the links of interest and choose "Open in new window." : ) I use the heck out of that feature of MSIE.

To open in a new window or tab is something I thought was the solution, except that the search page has a button with some code behind it. It does not allow to shift-click, control-click or right-click to open in a new tab/window.

I have a wheel mouse and use Firefox, if I want to open a link in a new tab, I just "click" the wheel.

Won't help here, but I love tabs.
Blake, give up your IE, it's not worth the trouble; )

Glitch, is that in Unix/Linux or Windhose?

Did you configure Firefox to accept a middleclick or mapped a keystroke to a mousebutton?

I'm playing with it right now

I must be one of the lucky ones. MSIE works great for me.

I was over at the folks' place yesterday and once again my dislike and contempt for the G3 Mac has been reinforced. My Pentium 133 with half the memory will run circles around that thing. Something terribly terribly wrong with it. I wish I knew more about the things.

So which browser is best for the Mac. Dad likes to play the videos on the news sites, so whatever browser must work with all that plug-in stuff.

Blake,
Not sure which Mac G3 you have, but I just bought one for my girlfriend for $25 with a nice epson printer, and it works great.
If I might make a few suggestions:
1. Check apple.com to see if there is a firmware update
2. Install the latest Mac OS X
3. Max out Ram
4. Use the Safari browser.
Hope that helps.
Of course the G3 is a couple generations old, maybe time to upgrade. A clean install of his current OS wouldn't hurt either.

Blake; Jon's got a lot of good suggestions. On many Macs, a bit of house cleaning works well for speed: Zap P-Ram: Start the Mac while holding down the Command (Apple)-Option-P-R buttons. Keep holding the buttons until you've heard 3 chimes. While the chiming is going on commence the age old chant:

Windoze sucks, I see the light of the Mac. Windoze sucks, I see the light of the Mac. Windoze sucks, I see the light of the Mac.

If you're running OS X, reboot holding down the shift key, to run the automatic diagnostic tools (no other actions from you needed) as well as repairing permissions.

With lots of RAM (cheap these days) and the latest version of the OS, you should be good. And Safari really is a nice browser. Depending on what video clips your dad watches, you may need to download the free RealPlayer and/or Windows Media Player.

Ordered more memory, 512MB in the form of two 256MB DIMMS to start. Can I plug those in along with the existing single 128MB DIMM or do I have to maintain identical DIMMs; it has a four slot single bay configuration.

I cannot believe you have me actually working on that POS fascinating machine.

Blake,
Assuming that you have the correct ram, it will usually work without being installed in pairs. Exceptions are the new G5 and some older macs set up with interleaved ram.

Just wondering what model Mac you have, what version of the operation system?
This information is available by clicking on the Apple in the menu bar, then going to " about this Mac" in OSX or in the system profile in OS 9, I think you get there in " control panels".
I am starting to forget how OS 9 worked:-)

Just bought two of the following...

168 Pin PC-100 SDRAM $69.55 SKU: 256MB-012544-1

RAM is configured in four banks of one slot each.

Maximum memory: 1024MB
Standard memory: 64MB removable

Most modern operating systems doing non trivial work will run like crap with only 128 MB, that was probably much of your problem. (yes technical nit pickers, I have a linux system doing cool things with 8 megs of ram, and I run emacs on my cell phone, but you know what I mean).

For windows XP, 196 megs seems to be a magic threshold. Linux does pretty well with 128 Megs if you behave yourself. Not sure about OSX, but I would bet it is similar to XP.

Nice little computer:-)
Here are the spec.s for it:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/stats/powermac_g3_400_bl.html

The ram you ordered is correct:-). Only little snag is that you paid a little more than twice as much as necessary. Oh well.
You might want to try Other World Computing for ram and your other Mac upgrade needs:
http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=41&type=Memory&TI=%23TimeForm at%28Now%28%29%2C+&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades
You just need OWC PC 100 256 mb ram for that unit. Cost $25.66 per stick

Nice thing about the Mac, is that processor upgrades are a 5 minute job. You might enjoy the machine a bit more with a 1 gig Sonnet G4 card: $379 also available from OWC, runs OSX a lot better.
Oh, and one last thing:-)
The OSX that you have in there doesn't really work too well. Don't know why they released it: it kinda Beta-ish, got the faithful really upset.
Might be a good idea to beg borrow or steal the latest Operating system, OS X 10.3, known as Panther. ( upgrade to 10.3.8 from the Apple site after install).
Nice to have another hobby, when the weather is so inhospitable to the Buelligan. Macs are almost as much fun to work on as a Buell plus your hands stay a lot cleaner:-)

Blake; while the B&W G3 is no speed demon by todays standard, it shouldn't have any trouble with the - as I understand it - basic stuff your dad is doing

Of course 128 MB of RAM has been a pitiful number for years by now ; ) so I have no doubt that the added RAM will help. Like Jon wrote, the memory is not interleaved (ahhh, the days of interleaved RAM, SCSI nightmares, OS 9 and extension conflicts - I was a dang wiz at Mac trouble-shooting back then).

I would also suggest you upgrade to OS 10.3. Aside from many security and stability issues resolved, there was a noticeable speed increase with the 10.2 - 10.3 upgrades. And by now 10.3 is throughly tested and stable.

Because of the software I was using, I was ensconced in OS 9 long after many other switched. I finally have most of my systems converted, and I must say, it's a joy working in OS X in comparison.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to help.

Blake, put more ram in that thing. *AT LEAST* 256. 512 meg if possible.

Buy a pair of these:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/item/3423/OWC100SD256324/

OSX actually needs more RAM than XP IMHO. I've got a 400MHZ G4 running a couple of web sites. It's quite snappy with 768 meg of ram. Especially considering it's only a 400MHZ box. But it will soon to be updated to one of the new Mac MINIs : )

But considering the OSX upgrade is $100, and the ram would be $50, you're already a 1/3 the way to a new Mac MINI.

ping me, and I can most likely get you 10% off a Mac Mini if you're interested : )

Bill beat me to it on the RAM issue (can you say Bill Bait ; )) It's my feeling (no tests or facts to support it) that 256 MB of RAM is the very lower limit for a well running Mac.

And then Jon beats me to the punch on the OS issue.

Must learn to type faster ....

The Mac Mini is a really good idea to consider before jumping into a lot of upgrade parts. If you need the expansion slots of the G3, that's another story, but since you already have keyboard, mouse and monitor, it's a very nice little machine that would likely satisfy the computing needs of 80 - 90% of Mac users.

Sorry Henrik:-)
Actually the Mini Mac is a good idea, but I like to waste a little of my friends money on upgrades, just to get the ball rolling before I tell them they really need a new 'puter:-)
The eMac is another one of my personal favorites for the non-obsessive, garden variety, real person, Mac user.

The Mac Mini is an idea Apple SHOULD have done years ago. A cheap "headless" consumer box that is virus/malware free. : )

While still more expensive than a PC alternative, the benefits outweigh the cost for your average joe sixpack.

Unfortunately, I just had to buy myself a new laptop, and it can't be an Apple becuase of my Cad/Cam software requirements. Which *HAD* to be a PC with Nvidia Chipset graphics

But it is a BIG cool honkin' desktop replacement. An HP ZD7280 with a P4 3.2, 1 gig of ram, GeForce fx-go 5700/128meg, 80 gig HD, 17" 1680 x 1050 display. Should play Half Life2 quite well : ) And a Media Center Edition to boot! with TV Tuner, etc... : )

I do lust after a 17" PowerBook though. Would be easier to lug around, considering this HP is 9 1/2 LBS!

Mom uses it too and she's a big Pagemaker user.

Crap! I thought that price on the RAM was good as it was less than what I found at Crucial. No bigee, I'll order the next two 256MB chips from the cheaper place.

Upgrading to the G4 board would probably have been the way to go.

Different RAM for the G$ probably huh? Crap.

And Mac doesn't give any kind of upgrade discount for their OS! We gotta purchase the full price deal. : [

Thanks guys, I'll be picking your brains some more, I'm sure.
