Please tell what was wrong with the 916 coz I simply fail to see how an S1 two up, even with Colin Edwards riding, never mind a lesser rider, could be all over the ass of a 165mph race bike with a talented rider piloting.

More like a case of California Dreaming if you ask me.

Oh no, Rocket, not a dream, but the real thing, although when the road finally opened up to some high speed stuff, the Ducati did lose us. But it took picking the rear wheel off the ground with the muffler to get me to let him go!

Nothing wrong with the Ducati...in fact it was fully kitted, and fast as hell. But not enough torque for the really twisty roads we were on. It was so, so, so, so, so much fun! I thought he was gonna break his neck as many times as he looked over his shoulder to see if he had lost us!

And if we'd been on an XB-12 (not yet designed!), I wouldn't just have been on his tail, I'da stuffed him! Just one of those great days.

Az_m2: i think your question has been answered.
FMJ: first time i rode with Erik was in a similar situation, except i COULD keep up with him (but only because Court was in front of him slowing him down... ; ) )
Blake: thanks back atcha.
Anon: and the great days just keep comin'. : )

Ok I can't do that - at least not in control as such, but I was pulling yer leg a little dude. I don't doubt your riding skills, two up either. My wife weighs 110lbs and I can safely say if I'd have ridden in the manner you describe with her on the back of the skinny S1W I wouldn't be here now and that has nothing to do with the bike You're misses must have large kahunas!

>>>but only because Court was in front of him slowing him down

One of the few times I made that mistake. Later that day just Erik and I did a "spirited" downhill twisty section that he'd never recall but still stands out in my head as one time I was "at my personal limits" on a public road.

Another such day was when I, on the first S-1 in California, and Famed Test Rider Joseph Boyd spent a day together. On Ortega Highway, I was "at my limit" on the S-1. Eventually (due to his slowing not my speeding) while still at full pucker, I esaed along side Joe on the Backbird that the world would be seeing the next month, to find him riding with one hand, knee on the ground and the left arm laid casually accross the tank. Ahh the things that 400,000 miles of "paid by the mile" GL testing do for a man. May he rest in peace.

The single lesson that sticks in my mind was the day Erik and I were to be at Uke's at 3:00 and we left the factory at 4:15. I was told "follow me, I know the way". Remind me to tell you the REST of that story.....

Ferris you are right....armed with memories and an already delightful heritage we are collectively setting out into the finest Buell years.....

Ferris,

You better be careful, any further will cause peg scraping and over extending the limits of your tires resulting in the upset of said motorvehicle!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I don't hug my Buell, but I whisper "I love you" to it when my wife is not around. I think my wife may be glad that I accidentally killed "BuellieMae" (X1) back in September, because "The Nazgul" (S2) is male, and since I'm not gay, she knows I won't run off with him! Wait 'til I get my S1, though! Oh yeah, since everybody's already been warned about explicit language; Gol-durnit!!! Went to pick up some ordered parts today and those Farley Hucks sent me two left side footpegs! I ain't ridin' side-saddle nohow!
Erik, thanks for the Great Ride...

Newf, thx! on the other hand, though, since the foot peg isn't even close to touching the ground, one could say i had plenty in reserve. well, it looks thay way in the photo, but it sure didn't feel that way at the time.

this was at the last BattleTrax of 2003, in Walnut Creek near San Fran, on a killer track, and there were at least five guys there that were poised to kick my aging ass, which i wasn't gonna let happen.

the tires i was running (still running, actually) are D205's that have seen better days (the back tire even has a plug in it -- if you scan the pix in the Oktoberfast/Tale Section thread you can actually see a shot of some half-drunk old bald guy in the process of plugging said tire...)

as such, i let about eight pounds out of each tire, to try and increase the contact patch (OH NO!!! THE DREADED CONTACT PATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and hopefully make up for the fact that these particular tires were never meant for this kinda abuse.

well, it worked, sorta, kinda, not really, a little, but i REALLY had to watch the throttle and brakes to keep from losing the ends of the bike. as i recall, i made 32 passes that day, and lost count early on the number of moments i had.

it all worked out in the end, though, as the Thong took a 2nd place in Top Time of Day against some pretty talented (and annoyingly young) riders, and is now two for two for putting us on the BattleTrax box.

um, if you take a REAL close look at the back tire in the above shot, you'll note the thing folding up on the wheel like a wrinkle-wall on a dragster.

next time i think i'll let a little LESS air out...

That does it Ferris, first chance I get, which may still be a while, we will be up to see you. My grandpa just bought a house in N. Bakersfield ( I cant believe it, it looks just like nice Orange County up there now), and I gotta get up there anyway. Problem is my wife works with me so both of us getting time off is a nightmare. But it will be done, thanks for the invite!!!

very cool, Sandblast. Denise and i work from home, so given some advance warning we can take off whatever days we want.

a word of advice, though: once you guys get up here, you will NOT want to leave.

Hey Ferris, Rocket sez he can't come out to play cos he's got too much home work, (ah shame) so my missis sez can she come too? cos it looks very nice & there must be some shops that she's never been in before, (this of course means the rugrat as well) so can you rent RV's round your way? that way I can let her go shopping, park the nipper in front of Nick jr and sneak off to play big boys games. Or just go to ballpark for the day to drink beer & eat hot dogs

FMJ: had to order the socket (hmmmm, how odd that nobody around here stocks a 3/4 drive 1-7/8 socket...). it came in on Wednesday, the nut fought me yesterday, but finally popped tonight (i had to get a little mad at it...). the sprocket is now sitting on the kitchen counter, waiting to be wrapped, and will be outta here via the Pony Express to Road Thing tomorrow.

Innes: gotta get the BBQ fired up and get the salmon on, but i'll be back tomorrow with some RV rental info for you. yes, of course your family is welcome. : )

keep in mind that Lake Isabella is nestled high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, about a four-hour drive north of Los Angeles, and is pretty remote in terms of shopping centers, ball parks, and the like.

what we DO have is roads, LOTS of roads, lots of TWISTY roads, lots of endless, mouth-watering, can't get ENOUGH roads...

er, um, ok, gotta go help with dinner. ; )

Hey, what can I say. 3/4" drive, 1 7/8"...any farm supply outlet. Now the 1/2" drive 36mm I needed for my '86 Beemer was another story. Had to go to THREE places before I found that.

Great Thong pic!

Rex,I asked Thom about that the other day and guess what--nobody bothered to mention any of that to him.It was news to him that his dealership was a launch point.Which is really stupid considering that he REALLY WANTS to be involved. So when anything is decided I'll let you know.BTW,I'll be at Vallejo on jan 30 as a "Celebrity"judge for a chili cookoff, come on by.
And don't forget we have Supercross on feb 7th at Pac Bell Park, gotta go to that!!!
