Denise and i took a little ride to Ridgecrest and back today, nothing monumental, about a 150-mile round trip, in PERFECT spring weather (yeah, i know what the calendar says, but this is California, bubba, and it was EASILY 70 degrees today).

anyway, we did the gig mostly on Highway 178 (a ripper of a road if you know it, which i do), which hugs Lake Isabella before exiting the Kern River Valley, then climbs up and over Walker Pass (awesome twisties, up, down, and all around), and then plummets into the arid high desert of the eastern Sierra.

we were on the Thong, my '98 White Lightning, and i just wanted to say to you:

WHAT A FUCKIN' LITTLE HOT ROD!!!

dude, i know there's plenty of great motorcycles to be had these days, but that nasty little Thong bitch was the fuckin' BOMB today! there is NOTHING like torque'n your way up a mountain pass, two-up, in the sweet spot, singin' a V-Twin Song, and carvin' the corners like there's no tomorrow. hot damn, what a sweet, sweet machine.

and, for those like such things (and i do), everywhere we went today the public went out of their way to wolf-whistle at the barely there Molten Orange and chrome Thong. from the guys on the bikes at Starbucks to the gearheads at the dragstrip in Inyokern (my buddy Darren was running his 180-mph dragster), EVERYONE sports wood when the Thong flashes by.

yeah, yeah, i know i'm getting carried away here, but today was a keeper, and you were a large part of it.

fuckin' A, dude, just fuckin' A. : )

Ferris, you never fail to inspire. Every time I read one of your posts, I get THE GRIN and think to myself, "Nobody would miss me if I disappeared from work for the next hour or so......." lol

Dear Erik,
Just in case you're listening...

With 24 hours to recover - Lord help me NOT to!
With a perfectly splendid VFR in the garage, I find myself on the back of this White Lightning thing. While the "driver" took her no where near the limits - what a thrill the small taste of this Lightning. Thank you.

I agree Ferris, the ride did not suck. : )

PS: M1combat - The chrome thing is a great idea - will have to get more Mother's for FB.

Rocket: if you bring it, you will come.
Kahuna: thank you.
Hoser: i'd be a fool to sell it. for those of you that passed on this low-mile S1W at a mere $4599, too bad, so sad.
Lake: looking forward to the pix.
Newfie: include "S2" into your statement and you're, well, bang on.
Newblaster: BIG thank you. i've been playing this game since '65, and i was as pumped yesterday after a ride as i've ever been.
Sandblast: if you and Leah ever get a wild hair, aim this direction and me 'n D will put you up here at the 'Dome for the weekend.
Denise: m-m-m-m-mmmmmmmmm....... : )

Yeah, two up is where these suckers really make a great sport bike. I mean, can you imagine anything more fun than riding an S1 two up, all over the ass of a 916 with a race kit and a talented rider on board? Such things have happened, and are what make for incredible memories. Remember to cover that kill switch, Ferris...and may you have many more rides like this!

I echo all the statements from you guys on the S1! I never want to sell mine. The most pleasureable things God has granted me so far is my wife and the saddle time on my S1! I can't wait for riding season and to get mine back. Getting the recalls done and some other minor adjustments at the shop. Its already been a long winter with out her! C'mon spring! : )

Good post Ferris I spent 10 days in WI in 2001 on a S1W and have never forgoten that bike (thanks Don)

"Such things have happened, and are what make for incredible memories." There is more in that than what appears on the surface.

Some of the most intresting people you can meet start a lot of there sentences with "I rember when..." memories are what you have left at the tail end of a ride or a liftime for that matter. They can never be taken away from you, the best one's cant be bought they need to be earned. If you are stuck in a chair in front of a fire it ain't the number of toys in the garage that will get you through the long night but a good jar full of memories. The best thing about memories are they are like good wine the longer you have them the better they get.
It's also worth rembering the best wine in the world comes from down here as well as a few good memories.

I'd agree - absolutely nothing better than winning on the underdog - more so when you're two up.

Incidentally what happens when there's a talented rider on the 916?

Innes that's a great idea but it's not possible for me, sorry. I've got the TVR to sort before April's out. The Buell motor to rebuild before summer. A week in Belgium to attend a Greek wedding (in April). Did I mention paying the tax man? Ask me again later in the year. Thanks all the same.

Ferris Thong is saved - heard sigh of relief

Leave on March 5th, racing starts March the 8th.
Bike is well on way need to wire in kill lanyard and finish drilling for safty wire. Started this week on the logistics for 6 people 6 days nearest shop aprox 6 hours return trip away (6 6 6 the devils number)so if you want it or need it to survive you got to pack and take it. 4lt of H2O per person per day = 320 lb of water to cart. I am getting clever packing water in to 1/2 gall plastic bottles and freezing thus the water becomes the Ice to keep rest of food and beer cold. Not only do we have to set up pits out on the salt but campsite to live at for 6 days about the same distance away as Wendover is away from lake. Will have to make up a sign and call our camp the PeperMill, dont think we will find an American Bush close by but lots of Aussie bush outside the Tent flap. Ross is driving down some 2500 km to join me so should be a hoot. We have a couple of spare seats in 4x4's if anbody wants to fly in and join us. I am taking my 400 hp Ford Elcomino look a like, will be a slow trip on the 170 km dirt going in but a few are hoping to be able to run it on the salt, I think they will limit us to 200 km/hr without roll cage but will give the crew somthing to play with.

That was the day. It was my S-1 and the rider of the 916 was VERY talented. You would know the name of the 916 rider.
