Here's something else to think about ...

flow sheet

This is a typical box-stock Thunderstorm head. Flow is on the vertical and valve lift is on the horizontal.

What good do you suppose it would do to use a set of .700 lift cams with these heads?

That chart looks a whole ton different after porting.

Thanks for the above post.
I've got some pondering to do regarding my M2.
My better half has informed me my Buell budget has been drastically reduced for next year.
I had planned on a 1250 kit, Bolt heads, cams and a race header.
But now I have to regroup.

If I read the above stuff correctly, the stock M2 motor with T-Stom heads, a decent slip on, and a set of SE's or RS567's should make a noticable difference.
What does throwing a 42mm Mikuni in the mix do to the above assumption?

Heheheh, good one. Do you have the flow chart for my heads laying around? That would be a good one to show what porting and valves can do for freeing up intake flow. I think Brian said they flowed somewheere around 163 CFM? I know flow ain't everything, there's the momentum/inertial/ram effect and velocity too, but flow is certainly an important part of the equation.

Brad ... if you're not going to pull the heads, you're stuck in the bolt-in cam world. Red Shift doesn't offer any bolt-ins at all. I'd go with the SE bolt-ins if I were you, basically make it an S1 motor. The Mikuni will give you better throttle response, ease of tunability, and a touch more power on the very top. Susy's S1 with that exact configuration (Lightning cams, T-storm heads, V&H slip-on, Mikuni HSR42) has broken 95hp on occassion but there's a lot of variation in the heads, not all of'em do that well. If you're willing to pull the heads and prep'em, we need to have a whole lot longer conversation.

Blake, I dunno, your project pre-dates me, but I'll ask.

Got our first dyno results from our CNC XB heads today ... this is a 1250 ...



We've been cutting heads with this program for a couple of weeks and seeing excellent flow numbers (and very consistent) but this is the first dyno sheet with'em. Not bad, but I'm not happy with it, we can do better, stay tuned.

You guys are all bastards! I had made it all the way to December without wanting to "improve" my 2002 M2. I got a slip-on exhaust (Wylico) and a Forcewinder when I bought the bike but haven't been thinking about dropping coin on my bike lately. Now I start reading about bolt in SE cams and I start thinking, "I could do that..."

So which option would be noticeable with my Less restrictive intake and exhaust.

1. Just bolt in SE Cams

2. SE Cams, 42mm Carb and intake manifold.

I am guessing option 2 would be better, but I am more interested in whether or not it is nessesary.

Finally, if I were to do option 2, would I have to do headwork to notice a change. Basicly if headwork is nessesary, I will wait till I can do the whole thing in one shot. Please remember I use this bike for recreation, not racing, it's gotta perform smoothly in the city/highway riding environment.

Aaron, you really know your crap when it comes to this. If you got a minute to spare it would be greatly appreciated to read your advice.

P.S. I just read your post on grinding out the bowl vent on a new forcewinder. I will be performing that mod when I get home tomnorrow.

P.P.S. I found a 26 tooth sprocket helps get rid of low RPM pinging under a load. It increases the fun factor around town and I can still get the bike up over 100 if I feel the need. Of course I also run .373 gears in my 400HP Camaro...

Question? If you take your heads off and do a stage 1 port Do you have to make any other changes ( stock bike except for jet kit K&N X1 cams) I'm looking for some added power but do not want to spend alot more money. I found you can have your heads done for around $ 500 bucks and if you don't have to do any thing else I might just do it while it is cold outside. Is this justifiable?

I put a Mik.42m.m. on my Y2000 M2,very nice throttle response,i especially like the way the carb slide seems to respond to the throttle when i close it,it doesn't seem to shut off all at once like my stock carb did.I'm using the stock manifold and a Force aircleaner.I think Aaron has a chart in the dyno section on this site that shows the Mik.added very little power with or without the scr.eagle manifold,but imo its a really nice refinement,if you could find a one cheap.I think i put around $400 into one and i doubt if i'd spend that again.

I've got a Force exhaust,way to loud.

I put in a set of the X1 (screamin'eagle 1)cams you're asking about.I didn't have it dynoed,but yes,they make a very noticable seat of pants difference,i lost a little of the big initial rush of power of an M2,but the power keeps building right up to redline,instead of weakening out.I'd definatly not want to go back to stock M2 cams.I think you can get those cams in the close contact ratio(another question for Aaron)I've never noticed any pinging stock or modified

Koz...Just hand it over to the folks at Hal's Performance Shop and pick it up in spring. Might cost a few more bucks but you will have braggin' rights to the fastest M2 in town and still have time to spend with your new bride.

PS: Was that your "Koz" I saw scribbled on the men's room wall at "Close Encounters" this weekend? Was a wee bit high for the rest of us mere mortals. LOL

Has anybody tried the Sport "W" grind cams in a late M2?
I'm picking up a 2001 M2 next week and just happen to have a set of those cams on hand.
