like they say "loud pipes risk rights" I know the sign is way wrong, but it probably is a reaction to a "problem in the hood". Methinks mostly its the Harley type posers that like to make noise so people look at the chrome, and like to blip the throttle every 3 seconds sitting at a stoplight. The more noise we make, the more they will be against us.

I'm with Joel on this one. If we had such a sign in our city, I could find many more things to do while on duty than write noise (loud pipe) violations. The general public is really unaware of the amount of work we do (like eat donuts and take coffe breaks).

from the AMA's web site:

Fighting Bike Bans

“No motorcycles allowed!”

It’s one of the worst signs any motorcyclist will ever see.

But in the ’80s and ’90s, a number of American motorcyclists confronted those signs—and with the help of the AMA, removed them.

One of the biggest bike bans motorcyclists faced in the ’80s involved a huge park in Brockton, Massachusetts, outside Boston. Fighting that battle cost the AMA years of effort. But, ultimately, Brockton became the site of one of our biggest victories.

It all started in 1987, when the City of Brockton banned motorcycles from D.W. Field Park, a scenic 700-acre tract around a natural lake. The AMA went to court to overturn the ban, but a local court sided with the Park Commission.

The AMA and local motorcyclists didn’t give up, however, and took the case to a state appeals court. That court also sided with the Park Commission, upholding the bike ban.

Firm in their beliefs, local motorcyclists raised money for a continued legal fight, and the AMA took the case all the way to the state Supreme Judicial Court.

In 1992, some five years after the ban went into effect, the state high court ruled—in our favor.

Brockton officials said they imposed the ban because of excessive noise and speeding, issues the AMA said should be dealt with through police enforcement covering all park visitors, rather than singling out motorcyclists.

In addition, the AMA argued that since motorcycles were recognized by the state as legal motor vehicles, they couldn’t be banned from public roads, including those in D.W. Field Park.

The Supreme Judicial Court agreed. In its unanimous ruling, the court said the ban was in direct conflict with state laws that guaranteed access to public roads by all licensed motor vehicles.

That decision was a major turning point, not only for Brockton motorcyclists, but for riders around the nation.

AMA President Robert Rasor was the Association’s vice president of government relations at the time. Reacting to the court ruling, he said: “This is a tremendous victory for all motorcyclists, plain and simple. As a result of this decision, other communities can no longer use the Brockton case as a legal precedent for banning motorcycles from public places. ”

Building on momentum gained in that case, the AMA, working with ABATE of Illinois, promoted federal legislation to specifically block cities and states from attempting to ban motorcycles. And in 1998, wording that prohibits motorcycle bans on any road built or maintained with federal funds was incorporated into a highway funding bill.

Ironically, the test case for that wording came only a short time later in Chicago, where officials tried to ban bikes from the city’s scenic Lake Shore Drive, which is also U.S. Route 41, at certain times. Thanks to the federal law, that ban did not hold.

Since then, several states have extended the same protection to state-maintained roads.

And the result is that fewer motorcyclists these days are coming up against ominous signs saying, “No motorcycles allowed.”

If it's a public road and you want to get that sign taken down, contact the AMA. You could also have a 10pm parade of like minded bikers through said neighborhood. Call the cops, let them know your coming. Everyone gets a ticket, everyone signs onto a class action discrimination lawsuit against said municipality. Sign comes down, could get some cash, too. Make that city pay for something new and shiny for your bike. That'll teach 'em!

I dont dispute the fact that us Harley riders do enjoy the noise. BUT what about Buell owners with a Force pipe or a D&D setup? What about some of the inline 4's with a modified yosh or Davinci setup? What about the import cars with the 4" soup can mufflers?

Its not simply a Harley noise issue. Lots of folks out there besides Harleys are just as guilty if not more so.

Spiderman,
Sarcastic commentary on recent events (legalization of sodomy in Texas) doesn't stoop to the level of the commentary to which you refer. I do apologize if that news offended you. ;)

Geez. I thought the moderater was going to be really pissed off til I saw the signature on that one, Blake. Its happening up north here too and has been for while. In the early 70s that French pervert Trudeau made it legal to f**k a girl in the mouth! Government is letting people get away with far too much these days!

In todays world of greed and selfishness arguements like this pop up. I think everyone here agrees that we don't need signs that say "No Motorcycles Allowed". We also agree that police should write tickets to everyone offending noise pollution laws... loud bikes, loud cars, bass stereos in the trunk. The only idea I didn't see on this topic is poeple policing themselves.

A"ME"rican society is becoming a place were people simply do what they think is best for them no matter what the effect is on the poeple or environment around them. Dyna's quote Its not simply a Harley noise issue. Lots of folks out there besides Harleys are just as guilty if not more so. Your right, it isn't just a Harley issue, but I don't see you replacing your pipes with something legal. You simply say that since someone else makes noise then you should too. There were some pretty noisy bikes at the Buell 20th. We were riding through red lights, stoping traffic because we didn't want to split up the group even though it was illegal.

There are a million different ways to explain it, but it comes down to the fact that people/society doesn't consider being responsible for themselves anymore. Laws are not really laws if you don't get caught so why bother obeying them? It's to hard to be proactive about being considerate so just wait till someone tells you that you are doing something wrong, or anoying everyone around you. It's much easier to justify those pipes by saying the other guy is doing it so I should be able to do it also. It's really too bad the world has become like that. Bikers in general can be a great group of people, when it is convenient for them to be.

Dana,

There was more than enough room to tuck in between the RVs and the oncomming car.

Wheres your sense of adventure, the guy in the car looked a bit shaken at the oncoming bikes though.

I guess we were being hooligans breaking the law.

Damm Bikers!!!!!!

Nope, I simply say ....screw em, its my bike & I like it loud.

What I did say was not for anyone to single out Harleys or Buells or any 1 thing. Lots of devices make noise, deal with & move on. If its a bike riding by, so what? It will soon be gone. Unless its a bike sitting in front of your house at 3am just cranking the piss outta the pipes...big damn deal.

Its like idiots who buy a house near an airport then bitch about the noise.

Interesting...I used to think the Vance & Hines can on my X1 was loud. Now after the 100th, it sounds mellow to me and all my neighbors.

Still feel it gives me away when I am out in the country running the twisties and am always a bit paranoid about the cops waiting for me around the next bend.
