I guess the aerodynamic laws have been repealed if not modified. Why you ask??? Well it seems that lately I'll pass a cage and they speed up as I am passing them. My only explaination is that they are drafting me and being pulled along with me in my draft!

A little squirt of gas and I am able to break their draft and then they fall back, quickly! I didn't know that a physically larger body could get that much draft from a much smaller vehicle!! Silly Neil that's my only possible explaination ;+}

Has this been experienced by anyone else??

It's amazing how your side draft pulls them along!! LOL

I have long noted the way ego, not cerebrum, drives the right foot of many drivers. I'm a cruise control guy ( in a car, it reduces tickets ) and see this all the time.

It's the ghost of Dale Earnhardt that's helping them "see the air". He could catch side draft off a motorized wheelchair.

Perhaps you should hop on the bathroom scale.

That behavior drives me nuts. I really hate the ones on the express way that get passed then pass you back just to slow down right in front of you.

+1 Cruise control all the time. Takes all the panic about going by a cop. Except the guy in front of me jamming on the brakes to go 10 under the limit.

+2 Aes AND Sifo! Normally I don't haul a$$. I'm a very easy going rider. The other night on hwy 50, I got my a$$ handed to me by a Trans-Am. We race from 60mph, to 100. I let off cuz he was clearly the winner. I got along side of him, only to see a laptop set up for fuel map monitoring on his dash. He had nitrous, the whole deal. I'm guessing he was running 400+hp, as he absolutely lit up the tires at 60. Once he got done pinging the rev-limiter, he hit the next gear, and walked me. One of the fastest street cars I've seen in a while. The driver was very enthusiastic about racing me. My guess is that he races a lot of bikes, and probably gives them a good run. Being the loser of that one, I think he was pulling me along. If I see him again, I will certainly ask about his car!

Here in lovely Europe, any truck over 12 ton gross is limited to 90kmh (56mph) I don't mean that's the speed limit as that varies by country, I mean physically limited, you hit 90k & no more pedal,

There are variations of a couple of k either way due to tyre wear & variation in equipment but as you can imagine, overtaking a slightly slower vehicle can take an age sometimes.

Now & again you'll get some clown who thinks it's funny to slow enough for you to go round him then put his foot down a little so you're stuck out there, I'll generally back off & let them go but if they do the same, I just put on the indicator & ease steadily across.

They can play all the games they like I've got somewhere between 16 & 40 ton & 460 volvo ponies to play with, I'm not going to feel much.

I've even had people do this with their family in the car.

One guy, having done just that, pulled in front of me slammed on his brakes then sped off just before I punted him in the back. Funny thing was about half an hour later when I pulled into the next service station, his wife accompanied by 2 Gendarmes came over to apologize & ask me to explain what had happened. Turns out as soon as he'd stopped in the services she'd dragged him out of the car & laid him out on the forecourt, no charges were preferred. But I nearly wet myself laughing.

I was at Maxton about 3 years ago and saw a stock looking Z28. This was during the street car challange. Noticed rollbars and a lap top. A little later the hood was popped and it was twin turboed and sounded stock. The guys in it drove down from chicargo.About 1000 miles, they ended up running 199mph in the mile. It was pushing around 8oo hp and ran low 10s in 1/4 mile.

The "side draft effect" is magnified with rusted out red pick up trucks.

Primer red one's are faster ;+} ;+}.

I just love it when a cage tries this on my 1125. Go to WFO and leave'em in the DUST!!!!! Usually I try and be kinda conservative and just pass them a little faster than they are traveling, It is soooo much fun to go WFO and watch the digits scroll to XXX and then I back off, ahhh, almost as good as............ well never mind, time for a cold drink b4 I ride home.

BTW all the LEO's in southern KY and northern TN are on the prowl, already, for the holiday weekend! I saw 6 LEO's handing out performance certificates on the way work this AM, I'll be just cruising along tonight.........

Good stores, Grumpy!

I saw on one of those car crash shows last night, and some guy rolled alongside a tractor trailer in slow traffic and flipped him off for some reason. The big truck guns it, cuts the car off, nails the brakes, THEN kicks it in reverse and backs over the front of the car! Then he drove off, leaving the flipper-offer stranded and mightily pissed!

It was pretty funny.

On the expressway, A guy who speeds up so I am no longer passing him is being a moron, but not endangering me so much.

On 2 lane 2 way roads, I have to judge if I should brake, punch it, intimidate, or ram him off the road. ( any other alternative? ) Brake is easiest, and safest. Unless there is no where to go to behind you! You have to have situational awareness to survive.

Punch it depends on speed & acceleration curve of my car/bike. If safe, at least you are ahead of the idiot. However, if he in turn punches it, you are now dealing with attempted murder. Then you should be able to brake out of the situation, because there SHOULD be a hole behind him.... but if there isn't, and you face oncoming traffic, you MAY have no choice but to ram. Even if you follow him into the weeds, it's better than a head on with an innocent. You really want to have watched offensive driving videos....

In the event, call the police first and insist they press charges of attempted murder. First one to call has the edge in future legal actions.

On the x-way, just pass or back away. There should be no danger there.

I play the cruise control game sometimes.
Pick a speed you judge will put you in the gaps, and you lose a point for each button press ( or sequence if accelerating ) on the cruise. 5 points for hitting a pedal. ( freebies for construction & police action )

The idea is to see the flow of traffic, judge speed, "waves" & wolfpacks and run as much as possible in the gaps where you can run safe & alone. You lose if you make others panic stop or drive discourteously.

the ones that get to me are the drivers who feel that the right and center lanes on an interstate are invisible to radar.

We've all seen the scenario...the young male or female in the "tuner" car (think Fast and the Furious) doing 40 over the limit, all mad 'cuz the family or truck is in the right or center lane impeding their reckless driving.

Back in the good ole days, ya just DIDN'T pass anyone or anything on the left. Sometime in the past few years, it seems, it became in vogue to use "the slow lane" to do your flying.

Remember when it was
Right lane=slowest
Center lane= medium speed
Left lane= speeders, and for passing
Now it's the "Free-for-all-way"

Curious as to whether this is just an area thing, or the new world order...

I guess I need to pay more attention, I have been driving for 8 years now, and never noticed the speed up thing regardless of what I am driving.

Bott, it is dangerous to pass on the right, so why would people be picking the right to pass instead of the left? This ain't England. Around were I am, the traffic usually follows the lane speeds you listed, with the occasional person wanting to go faster than the left lane is going, so it overflows into the next lanes.

I see it all the time, but I believe what happens most of the time is the person didnt realize they were holding up traffic until you start to pass...then they accellerate to get up to speed.

But there are the occasional @holes that play the game on purpose.

I think up here anyway, the speeders CHOOSE to pass on the right, and seem to think that L.E.O's are only looking at the left lane for speeders. Don't know why...maybe its just an upstate thing. Very dangerous, like you said, yet it is a constant here in the Capital District area, and North.

What kills me is the blue hair in the left lane on the interstate all day long doing the speed limit or less. Especially if you are going 3-5 over and you have a nice convoy of people behind you all waiting for that ONE idiot to decide that you do not cruise in the passing lane.

Another oddity that perplexes me... why in the world would 18 wheelers attempt to pass one another going UP HILL... and granted depending on the loads, weight and the need of the driver to reach his delivery point that can all make a difference. But my grandfather owned 8 rock trucks and one of the things he would always get pissed about are idiot truckers who try to pass another trucker on the interstate with a load. No reason to do it, and you really piss off all of the other drivers.

I actually was cruising by a flat bed truck one day on my way to the dealership and the guy had a blowout directly to my right 5 feet away...

For a split second I had an Afghan flashback and whacked the throttle to get by as large pieces of tire were peppering me from head to toe. I did a quick check to make sure the 1125 was ok and I kept pushing along. After we stopped my buddy said it was crazy because in less than a split second I was showered with tire pieces and smoke. Needless to say I make sure the trucker sees me before I pass, then I pass with intent.

Ohio is infamous for left lane cruisers, that never quite pass anyone. If you honk, they throw stuff at you, so I assume it's a cultural thing. ( no, I don't believe all cultures are equal. )

It's not that when you pass, they are reminded that they are slow, it's the little ego in the tinier brain pushing the gas pedal.

Most people, to my daily amazement, don't drive that bad. Not that they see you on a motorcycle, but they just want to get home alive, & usually do.

I MEAN that...you are invisible to most drivers, since their brains do not have "motorcycle" as anything other than biker movie meaning. There is scientific proof of that, but, simply...

Did you ever buy a new brand of car or bike, one you hadn't been interested in before? All of a sudden you saw every single one of them? That works in reverse too. I repeat, they never did see you, no matter what image appeared on their retina. The brain just never told them you were there. "Bike", wasn't in the programing. Yes, they looked right at you. Yes, you thought you made eye contact. No, they didn't see you.

What seems to happen with the "side drafting" is usually utterly unconscious competition. The little lizard brain is doing the reasoning, and an object going faster triggers the chase instinct. The number of lunatic murderous fools is actually small, and if lucky you will never meet them. It does happen though.

Here in TX we have another issue. In the metro areas the LEO's are required to tow your car if you are pulled over and do not have proper insurance. Well the illegal aliens think that this means to drive below (much below) the speed limit to avoid being pulled over since several departments also have a deportation policy. So for some reason the illegal's choose the left lane and their compadres choose any other open lane next to them. So then you and fifteen miles of traffic are stuck behind a bunch of jackasses that should be in the left lane or even better the service road. THIS DRIVES ME NUTS!

The bad thing is that here in TX we also have another offense called "impeding traffic" that the LEO's could use if they so choose to remove the offenders from our roads and country.
