We did ours by accident. On the trip to E. Stroudsberg a few years ago it tallied 1,100mi. so we thought we'd do the IB rules.

Left at 5am, got the gas receipts and such. All was going well until after gassing up in Chicago we saw the dark black clouds moving in from the northwest.

Needless to say the storms hit soon and we rode in some of the heaviest rain I've ever ridden in. Most of the cars were pulling over to the side of the road.

When the lightning started we pulled off I80 to a small town. There was a business that had a nice overhang on it so we parked the bikes and walked up to the building. Just as we got under it lightning hit the transformer pole right by where are bikes were parked. It was pretty impressive the flash, bang of the lightning then the bang of the fuses blowing. I'm just glad that we weren't standing by the bikes when it hit.

We never made the day since we kept running into the storm and gave up in Ohio.

On the return trip we didn't plan on riding straight through but we made such good time we ended up the 1,100mi. trip in 17 hours.

So I bought a Ulysses at the end of January, not the best time to buy a new bike, especially in Edmonton, Alberta. Got the invite to go to Bike Week in Daytona at the end of February. Sounded good and I started thinking. Figured the wife would be in Phoenix with her parents and if I got the bike there I could store it untill spring and weather good enough to ride the coast and back home.

Now the problem, time. Work is real busy right now so I can't take to much time off. A week would be pushing it. Well two days would be pushing it. So I worked through the weekend and caught a flight on wednesday to orlando. Thursday I road to the coast, Merritt Island, with the guys had some lunch and decided that I could make Phoenix and still get home on Sunday for work on monday. Hey maybe even do a iron butt bunn burner at the same time.

Left at 3:30pm and drove 48 hrs to Phoenix. 2200miles, even stoped for the 1000mile service in Beaumount TX.

I didn't count for the stops to add up to so much time or for the cold weather in New Mexico, or for the speed tax in Texas, or the numb hands the day after. But no questions asked it was worth it. Just something about long miles alone on a bike.

Mabe next time I'll stay off the inerstate a bit more. Now I just need to send some paperwork into the Iron Butt to get my pin. Then put it into my drawer. Some things are best kept out of sight, besides most people wouldn't understand why.
