http://monarch.tamu.edu/~maps2/us.htm  Grey route was a Iron Butt ride into Canada on a 2000 Road King. A good friend and I decided to do the 1000 miler at noon on a Saturday... Sounded like a good Idea at the time.. wasn't doing anything else that day... I would advise a little more planning. But I will say it was one of the fun & funniest rides I have ever been on. Just a FYI... Its hard to find a gas a station open after 11pm in Saulte St. Marie, Canada.... The U.P. and Northern MI aren't much better.... The orange route was a 850 mile day to the Dragon from Columbus and back. I just got the Uly and needed to give it a test ride. I was on a customer call in KY that got finished a little earlier than I expected. I heard the call of the Dragon and that was that. I headed south and I just had to go into NC to make it a complete "Why did I do that?" moment. I dropped the hammer north and a soon as I got back into KY, I called the wife to let her know I was still in KY and would be late getting home....... REAL LATE! When I walked in with my Tail of the Dragon T-shirt on.... I got the "Hairy Eye" and "So that's what took you so long" It was all good when I gave her the pink Dragon shirt I picked up for her...... Remember! small gifts and tiny shiny things will cover up alot of "SIN" Sooooo???? Whats the best "How in the world did I get here ride" you have been on? | ||

I've defiantely had my fair share of getting home late rides from just going further than I had planned. I did a little more planning for my 1000 miler - Albany, NY to Suches, GA this past March. It was 27* out when I headed out, pulled into TWO the next afternoon, 999 miles later. One of the best rides I've done. | ||

Lafayette,La to Berlin, Wi and Road America back to Lafayette,La last July for Homecoming on an 1125R. the ride up was easy, had plenty of sleep, left at 9am and arrived at Hal's at 6AM. Left Road America at 5pm sunday after the racing and it was a long, slow night with lots of stops. it was so hot by the time i got to mississippi that the glue melted out the soles of my boots and i had to tape them up with duct tape. got home at 4pm monday. had a great time. did i tell you it was HOT!! ride safe, tim | ||

1980-something, Bridgeport, Connecticut to Daytona International Speedway for speed week. KZ1000. Freeking COLD. Snow, ice, tears, testosterone.(notice-no brains) Ended up staying for two weeks, made it to Rockingham, then Atlanta races. When I got back, I realized my high school principle didn't think it was a good idea. Had to go to summer school that year to pay for my sins. Should have bought him a t-shirt. | ||

Marion, IL to Suffolk, VA on Jan. 5th, 2006 on board a 2002 955i Daytona that I had just bought. Well with the crappy weather, I64 was shut down, and I had to take I57 to I24 to I40 to I81 to I64 all the way home. 1016 miles, completed the trip in 15 hours. BELIEVE IT OR NOT p.s. I don't ride more than 200 at a time anymore. | ||

Cincinnati to North Carolina. I've done the route so many times I can just about do it in my sleep. On this particular ride though I decided the mountains were not meant to be ridden on freeways. As I hit the KY/WV boarder I turned at exit 1 and headed south on two-lane highways. For five hours I ventured south, missing a turn and getting lost. I found a road on my 'not so detailed map' and decided it was the best way to get me back on track. On the map the line was straight, in reality its probably one of the best motorcycling roads out there. It made the Dragon look like a walk in the park. Back in civilization I stopped for dinner. After eating I looked at the clock on the bike, in stated 7;30pm. I was still more than 300 miles from home and had to be at work in 11.5 hours. I hit the freeway and hammered down. Even with one stop for gas which I never got off the bike for, I was home at midnight, with 720 miles behind me. | ||

That's great if you can use the bike for work. A couple of years ago our company passed a rule that you can't after someone complained about 2 managers riding their Harleys all over the state for meetings. I think the complaint was a sour grapes issue more than safety. The company claimed it was a workers comp issue. They even went so far as to tell those of us that get called into work that we couldn't ride because we were on the clock as soon as we got the call. The union raised a stink so they recinded that order. I used to ride to jobs on weekends if I didn't need tools, it was great to be paid to ride. | ||

2001 rode from Ky to Pensacola Fl. on the back roads. Rode around Pensacola for a week, did some karaoke, saw some cool stuff, met some cool people and rode back. There were ten of us in all. We were coming back from Pensacola Beach, ten bikes rumbling at idle when the Blue Angels flew over about 200 yards overhead. Couldn't even hear the bikes at that point, what a moment. | ||

For me that would be my return ride from 24th Homecoming Event. At Road America, in a poor execution of "tuck and roll" I ended up with six broken ribs and sprained both ankles. I left East Troy the next morning at 5:30 am and arrived 730 miles later at home. It was 9:50 pm. Worst thing was getting on and off the Uly having to twist on the ankles. The Uly's long soft suspension made the ride tolerable. Hey Mark....ya know what I mean?) | ||

Dana Point to Boulder, Colorado . . .19 hours straight through, 1047 miles - July 2007. . . I knew I was going to have to get on the Uly and drive back to Boulder at some point after my visit to California. It was about 9:00 on a Saturday night at my friend Carol's house overlooking Dana Point Harbor. The after dinner weather report was calling for temperatures at well over 100 degrees from the coast all the way to the Continental Divide for the next day. It suddenly occurred to me that I should try to do as much of the trip in the dark as possible. I got up, told Carol "Time to go!" and was on the road an hour later. Boulder to Fernley, Nevada - 1024 miles, 17(?) hours June 2008 . . .I needed to get from Boulder to Newport, Oregon in a hurry to look at property I was interested in. Diesel fuel was near $5.00 a gallon and at 19 mpg the cost was way too high to take the truck. I loaded up the Uly with the Pelican "tour pack" and launched. Learned a valuable lesson about the effect of XB9 primary gearing, a large aftermarket windscreen and the omnipresent Wyoming I80 headwinds. I coasted into Rocks Springs . . .thankful that the several miles since I had run dry were all downhill. | ||

Atlanta Ga to Dallas Texas, ~ 840 miles I left about 4:30 AM and arrived in Denton at about 8:30 PM, memorable moments; the pig truck on I20, with car blocking the hammer lane, what were those fluids coming from the trailer? pulling into a gas station in Louisana, the Parrish constable is a large ruddy looking gent with a revolver in the waist band of his slacks, getting out of a decrepid unmarked landbarge. The look on Lisa's face, Ms Saunders I presume? decades ago, leg one of a 3 week trek that took me to Seatle WA | ||

nothing but respect for the Iron Butt types. You said it! I use to ride from CO to NC about every couple of years. First time was on a Ironhead Sporty. 850 miles in one day (the first day) then 500 miles days after that. Took 3 days and I hurt. Did it on a Evo Sporty two years later and it was better but did not make 850, made 700 first day. Third time and many years later I did it on a FLH, only made 500 miles the first day. I think that has to do more with my age rather than the capabilities of the bike in my case. 450 Miles in 1 day on a 97 S1 (MD to NC), never again. I know one Iron butt rider and have ridden with him. He has a total different mindset about riding and does it on a S3... Very impressive. }Frank | ||

I still have the itch to attempt a Bun Burner Gold. Drop the hammer west to the Rocky Mountains. Then take my time getting home. Hit the Mountains and head north.... There isn't much I wanna see between C-bus and Denver. I can say that the Uly is the perfect bike for Iron Butt rides. Just add a Tour Tank and go..... If I can't afford to race much next year some "Extreme riding" might fill the void.... For now, I will focus on MB6....seeing some old friends and make some new.... | ||

Did a "Yankee 1000" through NY,CT,MA,VT,NH,ME,RI a while back. Was in late sept. when the foliage was amazing. Did a NY SS where all 1000 miles where in NY Rode from NY to Knoxville, and back 1530 miles in 24. That was a bit tougher. Recently rode from L.I. to Lake George before work, for a picture. Was 500 miles door to door. I like doing it, kinda get in a zone, and do a lot of thinking, than can be back in time to watch my son. Hope to do a couple of multi day rides this year. Not everybody's cup of tea, and plenty of people will bash it, but I enjoy it. | ||

1156 miles. 19-1/2 hours from leave to arrive. Denver, CO to Hartford City, IN. One of the 19-1/2 hours was spent on a picnic table at the IL/IN line catching a few minutes of shut-eye. My best/longest mileage this summer was just shy of 900 miles in about 12 hours. Ferris pretty much hauled some Iron Butt miles with me in 2004. We did two days, back-to-back that were in the 700 mile range. The exact miles escape me now. I believe Ferris could do it if they built in 4 or 5 extra hours a day for photo-ops! Longest day I've done is from homecoming to omaha, ne last year. Only 520 miles. Before that trip I dreaded long distance but learned that it's all mental. | ||

The longest day I recorded was Kenosha, WI back to Raleigh, NC when I was returning from homecoming. That was 960 miles. I did another one close to that, going from Seattle, WA to Sunnyvale, CA. That was supposed to be 880 miles, but I made a few wrong turns and got lost so it was longer. I don't know how much longer. I enjoy the long distance rides. There is something satisfying about being able to do it. It's my niche. I don't have the skills to race, or the guts to be a street hooligan. But I can ride a bike from 6 am till 11 pm. As someone said before, it's all mental. You invent little games in your mind to keep yourself occupied. I do have to say that I-40 through Kansas is painful. | ||

Chopped58, Hey we stayed in Le Claire, Iowa this last summer, right on the Mississippi River. We ate at a little steak house called Sneaky Pete's. Great steak! When you go on your noodle-run let me know and I'll tag along for another mesquite grilled steak! I'm heading to Ouray, Colorado in the fall to eat steak at a saloon called the Outlaw if you're game.
