Will these following parts work on a 2002 M2?

Race Air Cleaner Kit (pt# 91421-99Y) and Race Muffler (pt# 91424-99Y)

What if any mods can make it work?

you should be fine with that set-up, you might have to plug an oxy sensor bung, and rejet. that kit shows it fits x1 and s3 too.

I don't have lookup with me...but "air cleaner kit" tells me it's just the hamcan, and "race muffler" tells me muffler, not header. I don't think the muffler will work with a stock header - 2.5" muffler inlet, 2" header outlet?

Ah...I love web-based programs : )

The air cleaner kit is only the air filter assembly (hamcan), breather hoses and assorted fittings/clamps. It'll fit.

The muffler does not come up as a "kit", so I'm guessing muffler only, so you may have to look into a new header to make it work.

Jc000, my 2002 M2 has a 2 1/2 inch header outlet to the muffler so you should be fine.

No, he wont be fine. The race muffle will not fit *ANY* header, except the 'race' header.

It has nothing to do with the outlet size. But the fact that the muffler doesn't have the elbow like the normal Buell mufflers. The elbow is integral to the Buell race header.

Kind of a bummer... I literally just picked up a "new" '00 race kit sans the header. I already knew I'd have to sell the ignition (doesn't work with my '02), and looks like maybe the muffler will have to go now, too. I suppose there is no chance for any kind of mod to get the stock 02 header and the race muffler to work together? The last race header I saw for sale was pricy.

Anyway, I appreciate the advice from everyone.

At least I got the CF filter!

My M2 currently has the race c/f air filter and the stock exhaust. You'll have to rejet the carb if you haven't already.

As far as fitting the race muffler to your bike, anything can be done with the right amount of skill and creativity and parts and tools. Or you could maybe swap off the race muffler for an aftermarket one.

Make him an offer. I've got a new, unused, WileyCo replacement that I might be talked into letting go for the right price if you two make a deal and if he's maybe interested in an aftermarket muffler.

Hey Jc000 was that the kit on eBay? It had 3 pieces of the race kit, sounds like what you got.

I have the Race Header, and need a Race muffler.

I can trade you a good aluminum Vance & Hines muffler that fits the stock header, plus some cash. Or just the cash... Or I can sell you the Race Header...

Jayvee, yes it was. Was glad I could make it happen.

I may be interested in the race header. If that doesn't pan out, I may want to part with the muffler. PM me to discuss, would like to know the condition/your price.

I thought the race header was the only indespensible part of the entire race kit.

Get the race header if you can, you won't regret it (it probably doesn't make a huge difference on an M2 like it would on an X1 or S3, but the difference is noticeable). Not so sure about the race muffler though... it's very heavy. I think its mass is the main contributor to the race exhaust systems reputation for breaking the front mounting shoe and shaking itself apart.

You're probably right, but I'm gonna try and give it (the muffler) a shot, at least look into the costs of a mod. Unless Jayvee wants to sell his header!

In a "worst-case" scenario maybe I can get enough for the ignition and muffler to cut into some of the cost of getting a drummer.

Be careful messing with the race muffler. Piecing to together a 90 degree elbow to connect the stock header to the race muffler shouldn't be too hard, but making sure the mounting for it never fails is territory fraught with potential catastrophe. Definitely incorporate a safety cable on the front of the the muffler to keep it from dropping down and pole vaulting you off the bike if there is a component failure.

My M2 currently has the race c/f air filter and the stock exhaust.

How's that working for you so far?

Also when you refer to re-jetting the carb, are you referring to the typical low-speed mod, or is it something else?}

That kit was sitting on the discount table at the Pensacola Buell/HD open house about a month ago. I could kick myself in the nads for not buying it then, although I dont feel as bad after reading about the muff's mass possibly causing failure. Scary...be safe and secure that thing! Guess Ill just stick with my SS2R.
Congrats on the sweet deal. Hope it works out for you, man.
BTW...Whatcha lookin to get for the ignition module?

"...although I dont feel as bad after reading about the muff's mass possibly causing failure."

That was mindless noodling on my part, so take it for what it's worth. The race muffler is heavy though, and the V&H is not.

The V&H muffler has a less than stellar reputation as well (never had a problem with mine).

From what I can tell the V&H aluminum cans have problems with the rear bracket seperating from the can. I have a carbon SS2R on my S1W now, and no problems at all with it - the carbon version has a proper slip-joint rear hanger loop, necessary since the front of the muffler hangs off the engine and the rear hangs basically off the frame. Engine moves, frame does not...muffler caught in the middle. I run the rear hangar a little loose on my bike just so the muffler can walk back and forth a bit - seems just fine so far.

Performance comparison, though? I had an aluminum SS2R on my M2 years ago. After the third broken bracket, I coughed up and bought a race muffler that would work with the stock M2 header. NO comparison, the Buell muffler ran 1000 times better than the V&H, and both were jetted appropriately. I was amazed. If I could find a race can for either my S2 or my S1W, it'd be on there in a heartbeat! I'm not as concerned about the weight, seeing as it's well below the axle line on the bike.

"...the rear hangs basically off the frame. Engine moves, frame does not...muffler caught in the middle."

The rear of the muffler is actually attached to the engine, not the frame, but your point still stands. The rear muffler hanger is rubber mounted and lets the muffler vibrate slightly.

Don't totally discount the weight issue of the stainless steel race muffler - it was brought up in the context of using it with the race header, not the stock header. The race header and muffler has a reputation for shaking apart the front mounting shoe and the header and muffler themselves. I'm not so sure the updated Y-mount ever eliminated this issue.

"bought a race muffler that would work with the stock M2 header"

Was this one the "Buell"/SuperTrapp IDS ?

Also, race header sent to Jc000, along with the Race Muffler Retention Kit recall notice. Now you should be set !

I'm not sure the stock mount or the y-mount would work with a race header anyway. At any rate, the mount on my M2 didn't look like the y-mount I compared it to. Mine might have been a homemade one-off, though.

And yeah, it did shake apart. : )

The Y-mount fits the race header, as does the the stock mount (shown in your pic). You are missing the front shoe that bolts the mount and is held onto the header by the steel clamp the safety cable is attached to. It looks like the guy who owned the bike before you eliminated the shoe and welded a fabricated mount onto the header.

Dosen't the race header use the rubber vibration block on the front mount?

Header just came in today, thanks Jayvee! I also had the recall kit come in as well for the muffler, has a strap looking somewhat similar to Sanchez's setup, except the cable is mounted to the muffler.

Anyway, you guys are freaking me out about muffler failure! I hope the recall kit (http://www.ukbeg.com/downloads/files/techbulletins /RaceMuffler.pdf) will be sufficient. Otherwise, hope the get the intake on this weekend, and the rest soon thereafter. Thanks guys!

BTW, how would I know if I have this y-mount?

Look at this bulletin and look at the front hangar for the muffler, if it looks like this, it's a 'Y' mount, if it looks like a flat piece of steel like Sanchez' above it's not a 'Y' mount: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/B032-263579.pdf

Good luck with the thing by the way! I am pretty 'noise-averse', don't really need more power anyway, and mainly just don't have the time/money to get it like I want it. Got a 6- month old baby and a 6-year old kid, free time situation not likely to improve soon. Swapping to my SuperTrapp IDS, more of a 3-bolts-and-a-clamp affair, after I got the body hangar brackets, came in last Friday. Still haven't put it on, even so...
