since i cant get the search feature to take any less than an hour.

can anyone give me a quick lesson on buell x1 cams? what is stock n2, n4, etc. how big can you go with stock internals. do they make a cam that will hop the power up without loosing too much low end, or like a 2500-6500 rpm power curve.

I think the general consensus is that the stock X1 cams are about as hot as you can go without having to alter the rest of the valvetrain.

They are similar to the Screaming Eagle .536 cams I believe or the N4.

X1 cams are 495 lift, don't remember any of the other spec's.........Charlie

From the FSM.

The LIFT is .211"

The DURATION is 256deg @ .053" lift

Timing @ 0.053"
Intake 28d BTDC /48d ABDC
Exhaust 52d BBDC / 24d ATDC

These are used with the Thunderstorm heads.
you have power from 2500 / 6000+ with good relaibility, ( you have this setup now )

IF you have opened up the intake and exhaust, then cams and head work are next
as you generate more power you WILL loose some low end power, its the nature of the beast. X1 cams are identifyable by the #15-1~4 stamped on each gear.

usualy a big bore kit can be added to recover a little,

S1,S1W,X1,S3 andS3T came with the Screaming Eagle part# 25648-91 to 1999. Part#25648 2000 and up. Their specs are the same: .497"
lift for intake and exhaust with 256 degree
duration @.053 for intake/exhaust. M2's used the stock 1200 Sportster cams. Many people upgraded to the bigger S.E. cams[.536"/.536" lift & 256 deg./266 deg. intake/exhaust] for more power. Nallin used these cams in his S1W with great success. I know of one S1 owner that installed M2/XL1200 cams because he preferred the bottom end punch of these cams. The valve springs installed on Buell heads should be able to support these cams but I would double check. I hope that this helps.

I knew it was 490 something, I'm getting too old to remember all these numbers.LOL I have had those cams in my 2K M2 since it was new with the stock springs and no valve train problems.And my tach. is no stranger to the red zone.....Charlie

The X1 cams are the same as N4s, more or less. .497". The higher lift cams, SE .536", should have heavier valve springs, I think. But that may only be the case if you change your ignition to allow revs to 6800 to use the powerband that the higher cams are built for. Engine life will reflect that, IMHO. As well, with a higher lift and tighter springs, the lifters become the weak point, so they will maybe need some attention. You can re-gain some bottom end with the big cams cams by increasing the compression, allowable with a precision build.

If you want longevity and power both, porting and a careful build with X1 cams are the best bet. Or a 1250 kit.

The .536 requires checking exhaust valve to piston clearances...especially if the squish height is tightened. Springs are also a must.
