I've been asking stuff on the QB, but I guess my Dumb Questions really belong here--02 m2, the ignition has a lock position, I've tried holding my mouth every way imaginable, finally had the brilliant notion to read the book,or at least look at the pictures--It mentions locking the ignition, doesn't say anything about locking the forks, if it doesn't lock the forks, I suppose I probably should just quit trying, and concentrate on something possible to do, but thought I'd ask, just to be sure--does it or doen't it?
Every time I mess with this thing I have a few things I mean to ask, but can't remember long enough to get them asked, guess I'll just remember one thing at a time. Apparently, one is my total capacity.Almost have enough room rooted out to get this thing in a warm place and start this rocker box leak deal, being a chevy guy, I'm thinking two miniature valve cover gaskets, 45 minuts-Daves sent me a whole box of stuff!!--Oh Woe is me, may be sharing lots of ignorance, but, got my picture book, doesn't look too bad. We'll see.
thanks

Rotza;
Rocker box gaskets are "a rite of passage for tuber owners" they are not difficult,
check the KV to see if the procedure is there, I believe that their is an electronic S1 manual here some where for the specifics its maybe 2 hours as the boxes are 3 piece, and there are some procedures to do (your chevy boxes dont support the rocker shafts)

Thanks, I'm just about to where I can get it inside(it's cold dark and ugly in my barn)where I can get some serious bonding time with this critter,I think I've accumulated enough parts to make it at least presentable. I'll look a bit harder for that lock, thought it surely locked somehow!! I thought my big block experiences would at least help in recognizing bolt head sizes and grabbing the right wrench, but now they had to come up with this torks thing.
ah well, I'll holler for help if needed,
Thanks

Torx are another of the "rites of passage".

All I can say on that is clean sockets, the right size Torx bits and of good quality, perfectly straight alignment, and hold your mouth right. Any variations from that and your Torx bit turns into a little milling cutter that shears all the drive points off.

The replacement screws from a H-D dealer are cheap enough, they are grade 5 to 8 screws, often with special washers, and not easily found elsewhere.

Even with careful work the more often removed Torx fasteners seem to need replacement after 3 to 5 use cycles.

I did the rocker arm gasket ritual on a 2000 M2 last winter (they started leaking at less than 3,000 miles). The details in the KV will get you through it nicely.

Use all the pieces you got from Daves, you got the metal gaskets, right? Those install with the stamped in numbers readable side up and no sealants needed. Attention to detail on cleaning the surfaces and torque specs on re-assembly will make it a long term fix.

Drilling out the return oil passages to 1/8" is worth the trouble while you have the covers off.

You're a lucky dude, you arguably got one of the most thoroughly de-bugged and trouble free tubers ever made. I still regret having outgrown mine...

Good luck!

Jack

Jack,
Glad you mentioned drilling the oil passage, I had read that, but had forgotten. Think I'll get it apart, come home and re-read all the KV stuff before I put it back, my memory's just about__that long

Ed,

Do you have a service manual? I burned some pages from the 2000/2001 service manual with the basic details and torque specs for someone else a while back, they are still there if you can use them.

Right click and save the images. Print them on letter sized paper choosing fill the sheet and they'll be easy to read. They are about 1 mb each in size if you're on a slow connection:

Well, I've got it inside, got my parts, ya'll've helped me get my courage worked up, guess I'm slap out of excuses.
Jack, I did get a service manual after a brief bit of study convinced me not to try and wing it. I'm dangerous with tools, I bleed a lot and break stuff, it's good I have somewhere to holler for help.
Beck's got one of those rearrange the house frenzies going on, so when we move that amwa, armwour, amwauh, oir WARDROBE!! (I can't say it either), I'll make my escape and go get my hands dirty.I wrestled Beck's Blast away from her while ago,(after she was through riding, of course), and took a short ride, it's a hoot, but I'm getting anxious to get a little time on the cyclone, it's going to be even hootier!
Oldog, Found that lock, just glaring at me, hidden in plain sight!!But I can't make it work, I'll mess with it when I can get to it better.
Nevr, didn't get a response from Blake, but I got a seat and tank on ebay,(working on a hugger), a new left switch from Daves, so with the stuff you so graciously provided, I can get it on the road!!My biggest hold up now is just time, this working for a living thing really gets in the way of important issues.
Thanks guys

Rotza I cant get it 2 to work???
please elaborate?
the switch key that came with the bike will operate the lock the front end must be at full left to set the lock and release it.

it catches on a notch in the steering stem.

your describing all of the furniture movement makes me glad I'm single.

Oldog, it turns, just had no effect whatsoever, when it gets to the top of the list, I'll mess with it some more and report. I'm brain skewed by something else now, the tail end was loose and a bit crooked, the guy I bought it from said it had a rubber bumper/bushing thing between the tailpiece and frame missing, but when I got it all apart, I see the very rear part of the frame is crooked. Rest of the frame looks fine. I drug out a chair, sat down, properly put my chin in my hand and studied the situation carefully.
Beats me.
I guess I could tie the rest of the frame down and rig up some bracing of some sort to make a jack point and straighten it. But, thats a lot of doing and time. It's not bad enough to cause any riding issues I don't think. My billfold in my left pocket will pretty much even out rider list. The thing is, every time I walk up behind it it'll drive me crazy. When some one's on the road behind me, I'll know they're looking at it. It's just a machine, as long as it runs good, I don't care if it gets dirty, or is scratched and a little ugly. But crooked? Guess it's one of those psychotic things, when I know it doesn't matter, but it matters any way.
Becky just said it's supposed to be seventy degrees Wed., that may have made my mind up, think I'll get my leaks fixed, my new parts on, and figure out a way to rig it so it looks straighter. Nobody will know but you and me. If I catch somebody looking too hard at my tail...well, I know what to do to those guys. I can ponder the problem all summer, fix it next winter. Man!! I love it when I come up with a plan!!
Joe,
I'm coming, gonna get one of those "slow moving vehicle" triangles for a mud flap. In the last 28 years, I've logged maybe an hour or so, all in the last three months (just recently got the mc on my license, a whole nuther story). I find myself a bit more cautious than I was 30 yrs ago. I did notice on my little ride this evening though, in the curves down the road, where in my truck, I slow down from 60 to the 45 mile speed limit, I did just the opposite on the blast. Debating as to whether thats a good thing or bad.

Sounds like you have a plan Ed.

If you don't have a centerstand, a good way to work on that is with two jackstands and a piece of 1/2" rebar through the rear axle. That is real stable and you can get it up on them easily by yourself by putting the stand under the right side, lifting on the rebar, and sliding the other stand under on the left side.

When I worked on my M2 I used a CenterStand center stand and it sure made working on it a pleasure.

That stand lifts on both foot peg bosses, raises the rear wheel a couple of inches and levels the bike. Nice and stable and you can get the rear wheel off.

When I was working in the basement I also hung a strap from a rafter and raised the front end to pull the front wheel for tire and brake work. When I did that I put some 2 x 6 staging up under the muffler to take about half the weight. That made the raised front end safer and more stable and I could have both wheels off at the same time.

I liked the CenterStand enough that I bought one for my FXD.

Jack

Rotza ...

I have the hugger off my M2 ..replaced it with something painted to match ... It does have the upper belt guard portion trimmed off ... doesn't really affect anything .. I didn't even know it was trimmed when I bought the bike ...

Here is a pic ... If you want it .. let's say 5 bucks plus shipping ... it's just sitting in the garage anyway ..

By the way - All this work you are doing, it's going to make you love your bike when you are done ! I know that is the case with me .. I still think if I had to choose, I would take my M2 over the S1 I just got ...

Here is the difference - the above pic was how the M2 looked when I bought it .. check my profile pic to see what it looks like now .. I am about 95% done with what I want to do to it (it never ends....)

Nevr & Tatt,
I had really meant, because of basic economic issues, to only fix the important issues, and ride it like it was for a while. But, this stuff kept coming up on ebay, so hard to ignore, so I kept pecking at it until I got pretty good deals. My clutch lever assembly I actually found at the HD place here (they even had six Buells, surrounded by a sea of harleys, circled up in the middle, facing outward with looks of defiant desperatio...sorry, I get carried away)I was excited, they only had three a while back. The lever was a lot less than the one I watched on ebay(Daves warned me about that).I was bidding on a hugger, pretty gently and got it too. So, until I find, or break, something else, I think I'm in good shape. I hope to just get it road worthy and half way presentable and ride it. I do appreciate it though.
Jack, I got my rod and stands, heading to my Mom's garage shortly, sent Beck on a ride while it was still so nice outside, and I was here to guard the yungun.
Thanks
Ed

More Questions: nothing's ever simple at my house!! 2002 Cyclone
I got the rear rocker box off, everything clean, no gaskets stuck, (going too good) started putting back. Opened that box of worms daves sent me. Put the big metal bottom gasket in, no prob, put the rubber formed gasket on top of the lower piece, put the formed rubber gasket on to of that, rocking right along. Then realized I had more stuff. There are red rubber(silioconized ?)gaskets that are formed like the flat formed gaskets that fit between the lower and upper and the cover, except they are turned the other way, as in vertical or edgewise. There is also one that matches the small rectangular middle section. They will sorta kinda, stand up on the outer perimeter of the normal looking gaskets. They look to me to be way too wide, maybe 5/16", to do anything but fold up in there and cause trouble. Decided they must be packed for multiple applications, left 'em in the box, but in starting on the front, as hard as it's going to be to wiggle everything out of there, I thought maybe I should be sure. Could be I'm missing something or just not understanding what I'm looking at. What am I supposed to do with those things?
Also, while I'm asking, on the umbrella valves, the old ones had the stem pulled through the hole, locking it down against the hole. There was a link though, showing how to taper the hole to let the tapered part of the stem to seat better. If the stem is pulled through the hole, it won't seat there anyway, so I assumed(yeah, dangerous)that it was done wrong before, and that it doesn't go through all the way through and just rides on top, it can't go anywhere, I'm thinking.
Right or wrong I put it together, and also forgot to drill out the oil return hole, if I don't need to take it back apart for the umbrella, or the gaskets, is that important enough to take it back apart? There would be no easier time than now, but if it's just a minor thing, I'll let it slide.
Never fails, the Sonic called, stopped up, gotta go to work, slowing down my project, but maybe it'll give some of you learned individuals time to figure out my questions.
Thanks
Ed

Ed:
The buell sporty kit is basicaly complete.

1. you dont have to drill the hole bigger
2. IF you are in doubt IMO re check / re do

the Umbrella valve goes through and the "arrow head snaps out to retain it if its not fixed in place re do it. it will go to some where you dont want it.

I am going to re size the manual items to give us a frame of reference for any questions. see next post..

heres a detail of the breather.
the hole is there its ok a bigger hole is better the important thing is the steel gaskets on the bottom.

Here is a break down of the rocker box
the small gasket "#8" goes in the "chimney"
Normaly if you have the right kit there are no extra parts, the 6/7/8 items are rubber and should fit into grooves in the box casting.

notice the note at the top dont turn over the motor untill the push rods can be turned with the fingers.

a couple of other items right or wrong I bring each cylinder up to TDC on the compression stroke (plugs out) for disassembley and assembley, I do the boxes one at a time the 2 lower steel gasket halves in the new kit are one piece with bridges in them. if indoubt post as you have there are NO DUMB QUESTIONS except the one that you did not ask,

when you start the engine for the first time the lifters will be loud for a bit 1 to 2 minutes max as they pump back up.

Confused and bewildered as ever here, starting to seem like my normal state of mind. I put all the gaskets in your picture in there except the little black "O" ring looking things in the top right corner. Don't remember seeing those. The red edgewise type gaskets are in that box too. Being in the plumbing business, and messing with gaskets all the time, I see no logical place to put them. They look like they could almost stand up outside the other gaskets, but would just fold up when you put things together. Maybe Daves just put those in there for fun, nah, not April 1 yet. The diagram in the book shows the gaskets the same except for the bottom metal being one piece, but that made sense, these extras don't. There are also some little bathtub shaped rubber boot things, I don't know what they are either. One of the red ones is shaped just like the outside of the chimney gasket also. I may be able to get some pic's. If this is a different multi purpose kit, I can't imagine what it would fit, or how it could go together. I will go back and fix my umbrella, I don't understand the chamfer thing to fit the bevel on the umbrella , because the bottom of it is flat, but it may have been updated too?? At least it makes sense, these gaskets don't, if we don't figure out where to put them, I'll leave them out, see what happens.
I can't remember the kit number,(I've previously mentioned my memory issues) but it's close to what you showed, I'm working on it in my Mom's garage, so I'll have to go look again, try to get some pic's,
Geezz!!! I used to like mysteries
Thanks,
Ed

the Xb bikes have the plastic pushrod box thingy the black rings are push rod tube orings IIRC

the orings in the above pics may not be part of the kit, they are pushrod oring seals though.

Nice pics Becks!
Ed-not sure if you mind me jumping in, but it looks as if you have everything and a bit more in the new stuff. In the #2 slot in the top pic, the lower stuff you shouldn't need, save for the black almost square piece. Everything else is probably XB stuff-just guessing on that tho. The rest should go in as easily as it came out.
The paper/fiber washers-looks like you have six left go under the 1/4" allen heads in final assembly...Hope that helps.

Okay, Becky got the pic's up, I just laid one of the extra big gaskets across the other to illustrate how wide it is.
Another thing,(i hope i don't exceed my inquiry limit on this one little project). On this top dead center thing, I can't see the valves through the plug hole. I think I can barely see the edge of the piston. I tried putting it in gear and bumping the piston with the rear wheel, didn't work. Do you bump it with the starter like a chevy, get it coming up on the compression stroke, and catch it on top? Or is there some other way I haven't thought of? With the rocker cover off, I can just watch the rocker arms, I s'pose. I'll be sure it's loose before I turn it over, and I believe everything's going to fall into place in the morning. Trying to have a little faith in the power of positive thinking.
Thanks again

Ed its definately a puzzle but CeeJay has it right the odd red pieces are not needed and fit some thing else. [XB is the reasonable guess, the bath tubs ??

TDC:
plugs out bike in 5th gear, I use a clean steel wire between my fingers in the plug hole and feel it come over the top, after the intake valve closes the idea is to have the lifters on the base circle area of the cams ( side opposite the lobe ) I can just see the piston through the plug hole, I am not sure that I can see the valve.

but thats how I do it.

Oldog, Ceejay
I sure do appreciate it, it's funny, when, I think it was Jack, said "use all the parts"(who would think they'd change the kit?), I thought to myself, "uh oh, I always have something left over". I think the A suffix on my kit # probably stands for Anguish. I would like to see what those gasket Do fit. Maybe a deep groove or something, when I get time, some rainy day, I'll try and find out. Those open bottom leg tubs will almost fit in the oblong openings that the big formed gasket protrudes down into. Maybe on whatever other application, they replace those protruded sections. Who knows?
TDC, well, like I said, I'm slow, FIFTH gear, (ratio's, duh).
Okay, heading up there shortly and try again. Maybe, I won't have to go to work, my Mom's car won't break, and the neighbors won't have a wildfire in their woods,( with the gale that was blowing it was exciting though), it's always something.
Thank you again
Ed

Ed,

You're doing fine and there is no danger of your exceeding your limit on posts or question here. You're getting the same wonderful hospitality and help I got when I fell in the door two years ago.

On the TDC thing, I pull the plugs and invert them back down into the plug holes. I do that so that nothing gets dropped into a cylinder by accident. When I turn the rear tire you can hear the air hissing by as the piston comes up. Put your thumb over the hole and you'll feel the pressure drop at TDC.

Roll both cylinders through (turning the rear tire) as a sanity check after you get it all back together and before you start it. That will be one final check for things that can bend valves and poke holes in pistons. If it don't go easy (other than the normal forces) don't force it.

When you're all done and fire it back up, you may hear some ticking noises from the lifters for 30 seconds or longer. That has to do with getting the air out of the lifters and getting themselves all bled down and working right again.

Progress report:

Got all apart and back together, the front was a little more trouble to get cleaned up than the rear, but not too bad. Still have to finish oil change, and trans oil, put my new used tank on, blinkers, left switch, clutch perch & lever, the plastic tail part--geez this list is longer than I thought, might not ride tomorrow night after all.
Mostly want to get it cranked up and see if oil sprays all over the place. I might find one of those gaskets over behind the tool box. I have been proven to be capable of such things.
Had a mild panic attack when I got home and started searching around to see what those funny gaskets fit, didn't find that, but every where I was, folks said use locktite on everything. I didn't. I couldn't find anything in the book that said to use it, but figured I missed it. Getting myself primed up, thinking, had enough practice, one more time won't be too bad. Then I found one of Jack's old posts (paraphrased) "the book doesn't say use it, I've got 1000 miles on mine without it, no leaks". Bless his heart. Just hope I didn't miss a later post- conjectured paraphrased-"well I've got three leaks at 1100 miles, should have locktited everything". I would rather do anything it needs now , while it's all apart, but I sure don't want to do anything thats not necessary. I'd rather try riding it a while.
Oh yeah, the TDC, with ya'll's help, and getting my memory stirred up, it's just like my old chevy!! Thumb on the hole, "here he come, whoops dar 'e go"

folks said use locktite on everything.
Err No,
If it its not called for you dont need it..
And locktiting the well nuts will ruin them. (ask me how I know)

Watch out for which type when it is called for ( I got to re install my sprocket because I ASSUMED BLUE was to be used and RED was called for )

great to hear that is coming together,

Daytona D - 9 and counting........

It appears, despite all my best efforts, ITS GONNA PULL THROUGH!!! Fired that baby up---sure am glad I had the warning about all the noise, still spooked me ,even knowing it was coming. Still didn't get it out the door, durn it, my tail light's broke, I gotta do a little Cherokee engineering and rig it back together. Took all my reason and waning maturity to keep from taking a little spin anyway. Tomorrow night.
Only had one misadventure tonight, I was carefully pouring oil from a gallon and a quarter jug into a quart jug, trying to keep my volume approximated almost nearly close. Poured the first quart in, back to the jug. After I measured up the second quart, less what I put in the filter, I turned around to pour it in the oil tank, and lo and behold, my little black plug was trying to float in the first quart, slowly spreading across the floor. When I jumped over there to plug that hole, I dropped the quart I had in my hand, well, really kind of threw it,way over under the drill press. Two oil slicks going. Perhaps I'm getting a bit over anxious. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I could have watched somebody else do that, but it was pretty funny anyway. I at least manage to keep myself amused.
Oldog, saw that Daytona note, assuming it meant you were going, forgot where you were, and was going to tell you if you came through here, we'd find some coffee, but after rechecking your whereabouts, it would be just a bit out of the way. You'll just have to tell us some tales. Unless you REALLY need some coffee.

Alright! And Congratulations!

On the broken taillight, one word, "clear package sealing tape". Great temporary cure.

More Progress:

Got my blinker switch on and that wire rassled down where it plugs up. Had my tail light all epoxied up(stud had broke out of the plastic), it worked! hooked my blinkers up--nothing.
My blinkers wouldn't do a thing. Picked up a flasher today (glad you didn't put yours off till the LAST minute, Oldog).Got it on, got all my blinkers working. Think I'm ready to ride, but kept remembering things I forgot to put back on or together. After all the nice weather, it had rained today, but had stopped, and was drying up. But, by the time I got it out the door IT STARTED POURING AGAIN!!! Then it started running ugly anyway, might be out of gas, tomorrow's worries.

Oldog

I would seriously love to take a test ride like that, but, I've a grand total of a half mile on this thing, and you KNOW who's been working on it. And, well, I'm one of those guy's......well things just happen. Jackbequick had asked in another thread if anybody remembered Joe Btfsplk. I do because I always related to him so. He's gone, I inherited his cloud. Unlucky, yes but still so blessed. If I went off with an Oldog and somebody named 1313........AIN'T NO TELLIN' what might happen. Hope ya'll have a great trip. Thanks to all again.

Noticeable Progress Finally: RODE IT!!!!!

Finally got off early enough to get there before dark, SOMEBODY left the switch on. Had to go home get the charger, got some juice in it, cranked it up, got it outside----won't go. Added some gas--NO. Died when I let the clutch out,or when put in gear. Suspected clutch switch(had been disconnected till I put new left switch on), decided it's OK, started messing with side stand switch, could not get the wire connector off--fought and fought-getting darker and darker(conditions and frame of mind).Grabbed my cutters, whacked that wire and twisted them together--FIXED IT!!!
Crawled on that baby and rode away!!!
Still grinning
